The International Quilt Museum presents, "Sample Home: Wall Work by Amy Meissner," this week's Textile Talk.
Textile artist Amy Meissner gathers cast-off and salvaged women’s handwork, household textiles, and found objects. In these artifacts, she sees the tracings of women’s knowledge, decisions, and intentions. Her quilted art made for vertical display, which incorporates these objects, emerges as an amalgam of traditional handwork and female points of view, of historic roles and contemporary complaints, which serve to expose women’s emotional, physical, and literal labor.
About the presenter: Alaska artist Amy Meissner combines traditional handwork, found objects, and abandoned textiles to reference the literal, physical, and emotional work of women. Her social practice centers on fostering a repair culture by teaching clothing and textile repair as an act of prolonging, care, and accompaniment of vulnerable objects in transition. She holds undergraduate degrees in both art and textiles, an MFA in Creative Writing, and is currently a Northern Research Lab Fellow at the Anchorage Museum researching Northern Repair Culture congruent with graduate work in Critical Craft Studies at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina.
Textile Talks features weekly presentations and panel discussions from the International Quilt Museum, Modern Quilt Guild, Quilt Alliance, San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, Studio Art Quilt Associates and Surface Design Association. The programs are held online at 2 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Pacific) on Wednesdays.
Thank you to our Textile Talk sponsors: Aurifil, Artistic Artifacts, C&T Publishing, Empty Spools Seminars, eQuilter.com, Handi Quilter, Misty Fuse, Moda Fabric + Supplies, Nine Patch Fabrics, Quilt Mania, Schiffer Publishing and The Quilt Show.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful conversation. I've been lucky to see Amy's work in person, and love her thoughtfulness, sensitivity to detail, and craftsmanship. Using a timer to track her applique speed resonated with me SO MUCH!!! I also use a timer for projects like this and once calculated that I spent 24 hours appliqueing 365 circles... ❤

What a fantastic talk. It totally resonated with me on so many levels. From concept to material, to considered and careful and time intensive execution (which itself is part of the work)...moving and authentic. Thank you.
