In all honesty it's absolutely crazy to think about how close Frusciante came to death and in my opinion Flea's consistent contact after his first departure from the band kept a light at the end of the tunnel going and thank god Flea is the person he is and being that genuine of a person to not turn your back on someone who considers you a big brother even when they hit beyond the rock bottom that John did is a testament to Flea's love for his brothers and his love for life.

You're right its absolutely insane. It's one of the greatest redemption stories in all of music. Sometimes the song Scar Tissue gets me emotional because its just such a great, beautiful song and I'm sure John's insane scars on his arms are what inspired some of the lyrics. John is such a beautiful human being I'm so glad he made it through all of that.

I saw John play his bizarre solo material at the Viper Room at the depth of his addiction. His teeth were black and rotting, and some guy in the tiny audience of about 50 started berating him for his life decisions. It was a rough night. I later had the fortunate experience of seeing them play at the tiny Huntridge Theatre in Vegas, when John had rejoined, and they were just jamming and getting reacquainted.

Seanonymous yeah man I have that show and another from smalls. And then he asks the crowd weather he should continue playing or leave or if you want that guy to go to tell him to fuck off , so the crowd yell fuck off to the guy.

@@Celeste_2611 That's so great that you have it - I don't know it you've been to the Viper Room, but it's tiny. The stage is like a 1' riser, so John is arms-length from the small crowd. When the guy started talking, John looked like he wanted to crawl in a hole. It was so strange and intimate, and the guy who spoke up was right next to me.

Katt, you need to be thankful for their pain, for their pain has become your pleasure. Not to say you are a sadomasochist or indulge in schadenfreude, but you see, great art is born from great pain. Show me a great artist who is not in a great deal of emotional pain, and I will show you either a thief or a liar. So be happy these musicians whom you admire so are constantly on the brink of suicide. This is where the sweet art comes from.

I knew there was a dark history to this band, but this shows just how bad all those drugs were to them and people they knew well. The dark terrible stories really cemented who they are, what their material is made from. And it’s evident in their lyrics. But what they have overcome is nothing short of stunning. It’s also interesting to see how things have changed in 4 years. A year after this John officially rejoined, then the pandemic tore through the world, and by 2022 the Red Hots are bigger than ever with two albums and selling out large stadiums.

Yes, that was so great to see. Even if doing this video was only a drop in the ocean of influence that got them back together, I'm really proud and happy for them. I wouldn't even say I'm a "fan", they're just part of the playlist of my childhood, and there's feelings of nostalgia when I hear certain songs, and seemed like a good place to start this series with what I knew of their history. Always good to see a happy ending, people cleaning themselves up and getting back to doing what they love, and they're just cranking out the new albums. Catching up on lost time I suppose =]

This trendsgender thing is getting out of hand, not only are people doing it to be trendy like people did with bisexuality when I was in highschool, but then all of a sudden EVERYONE from the beginning of time is also a trans? It's like when you find out a conspiracy theory, and then actively apply it to every situation you hear about...even if it has zero merit.

I love your documentaries: each one, carefully crafted in your unique style and peppered with a good sprinkling of obscure facts, showcase your passion and obvious commitment. Do keep up the brilliant work. One minor issue: would you check your microphone? It periodically goes soft, usually after you pronounce 'p', after which it takes a few seconds to come back up to volume.

About John Frusciante's heavy drug period; "It was a period of rebirth, where I found myself and cleared my mind." I think it was more like a period where he LOST his himself, and cleared his mind as a result. Sometimes you need to go deep to find peace within.

Awesome film- well done. Thanks. Somehow, I have never forgotten all those times with the music. Since the I-Beam, SF CA, my frontal cortex was almost all wired up by that time- oh, I understood, even then, the chaotic, tragically fragile love flow. Miss those guys from an all too brief, possibly forgotten, unforgettable encounter on Height Street and in the GG Park. Would love to have heard more about Nina Hagen’s influence on Kiedis. You can hear her lyrics and he def was inspired by her and delighted in her Life as art. Thank you for a non judgmental and informative piece. I grew up in California when the RHCP, Butthole Surfers & Fishbone all played together in bars and “no clubs” as they were called. Different venues every weekend. It was a liberating time even with the drug addled haze.
