I think it's because somehow the AI artifacts end up giving the impression that the singer has been crying or screaming their throat raw.

I think its partly AI. The creator of the audio said that he uses Diff-SVC or something like that and it just uses the voice samples and makes the samples follow the singing.

It's a clever way of leaning into the limitations of the technology, the cracks and inconsistencies these generators tend to create can also occur when someone is crying/screaming.

If you think the AI making this song cover using in game voice lines is impressive, then you might want to watch the cover the youtuber did for the Pyro. Where the Pyro sang a cover of "I don't want to set the world on fire" Sure the engi had a verse or two, but most of it was Pyro. The AI he used, actually managed to make him sing.. Beautifully. Not mumbles but full ON recognizable singing.
