One thing I'd like to add to Valve toying with Pyro's gender was in Meet The Spy. On the alert board at the start of the video, the word 'Pyro' has the phrases 'Is a Man' and 'Is a Woman' directly underneath it.

I remember another mod that technically was a Femme Pyro, though its focus was very different from these. All it did was switch out the Pyro's gas mask head out for Scout's Mom. I remember the Pyro being Scout's Mom being a popular theory for what felt like all of two weeks.

Honestly, with the whole swapping genders update. I fully and honestly believe that if you did that with the Pyro. Absolutely nothing would change. Here me out. Tf2 loves playing with Pyro's gender. So why would they spoil anything even if they added that gender swap ability.

I remember watching a video a while ago about the TF2 female models that Valve had planned, I think it was from Shounic. They ended up getting cut due to concerns with hitboxes and players using the female models to have smaller hitboxes. Ultimately a smart decision from a game design standpoint, but it does end up causing a lack of representation as of which was being joked about in the video. There are no other reasons people have female player models installed I swear.

I must be old because I remember when FemScout was considered the most popular mod. Maybe it had to do with the design being pretty not super horned-up and it having a well received community voice mod, too.

What a 4+ year gap between updates does to a community:

On one hand. The redux is really well made and makes a good spin on the regular formula of designs. On the other hand I got a whole voice mod changing his mumbling to Max dialogue from Sam & Max and it fits so well with his regular design it's hilarious.

When this came out, back in my day, severs were filled with people literally screaming at each other and getting into long winded arguments about the gender of the Pyro It was a glorious day back then

I think a big part of why Fempyro mods are continuously updated, thus maintaining popularity, is that Pyro's voice is muffled and vague enough that none of the voice lines need to be modified. Compare to, say, ChemicalAlia's various female classes mods, which stopped receiving updates because of how frequently new voice lines were added to the game (combined with ChemicalAlia actually getting hired by Valve after making these mods. RIP, that fem Spy is GOATed.)

Dude. Even *I* have history involving this mod. I won't go into the whole details, but tl;dr I made a pair of striped thigh-highs for this mod, people called it Mega Cringe (because people on twitter hate woman pyro), devolved into arguments from the pro-fempyro and anti-fempyro crowds, flame war ensued, I took the mod down, yada yada. I got paid for it tho, so in the end I still won. :P

I actually really like the half-masked pyro mod shown at 4:51. I remember using it ages ago. I can tell why it never took off, though - the design looks more like something from Jet Set Radio than TF2.

I think the funny ball astronaut helmet for the Another Femme Pyro model at 4:45 might be a reference to the Fury from Metal Gear Solid 3. The Fury is a boss who is a pyromaniac and wears a similar looking helmet with text on it.

Honestly my theory is still that Pyro isn't even human. I think if we step back from the whole Pyro gender thing it's clear the old website "if he even is a man" line meant man as in human. While I am generally on the side which would deliberate this with Dragon's Fury, I cannot lie that myself are also a massive enthusiast at Rule63/Genderswap in general, and hence why I had FemScout&Spy mod on my PC, but for different reasons. It was such an extremely rare moment when someone with amazing voice actor skills participate in a free project which already controversial from the start, hence why I adore DustyOldRose Female Voicepacks so much. Because she nailed their personality and change another perspective that Rule63 isn't that bland of a trope that consisted of degeneracy like the whole context in this video. Hence why one of my life goals would prob commissioned her to complete the voice packs with the latest voice lines possible.

I remember on one of the older versions of TF2, when you selected your character, Pyro had a tag line on the character page somewhere that said “Give her a try.” Since then I always assumed Pyro was female so installing a mod that gave her a more feminine appearance seemed more appropriate than the vanilla design. 🤷‍♂️
