Black box is amazing when your team already has a lot of power and is amazing on defence cause sentry nests are tough to take out on this loadout.

I think I know why you got crits more often. You said it lets you stay in the frontline longer. Your chance of getting a crit increases the more damage you have recently done. The black box gives you sustain. I imagine you had many moments where you would weave in and out of extended skirmishes one after the other while it heals you enough that you can take the next fight.

I do find that even if a medic is on your team, the black box is good for letting the medic focus on others and having one less person to worry about healing (or not having to heal as much.)

This actually happened to me. There was this guy who stole my Black Box and dominated the rest of my team and won the game. I'm devastated that my own Black Box was used to beat my team

nah man, you gotta combo it with the conch and zatoichi. it turns soldier into a subpar melee charger, but he is pretty fast and going on tears with the katana's health gain is really fun.

Soldier has two important resources. HP and clip. The black box makes it easier to manage one, but harder to manage the other. It's a decently balanced concept.

the black box DOES actually let you still play hyper aggressively! remember that last rocket you use to jump away? YOU DON'T NEED IT. jump in, kill everyone involved, use the health on hit to HOLD YOUR GROUND. let your team advance to where you just cleared everything out while you're reloading, then play some more hyper aggression to further push the enemy team back, while continuously extending your fallback line by allowing your team to move up behind you. you're suddenly both a team player AND a hyper aggressive 260 health explosive flying scout. EVERYTHING must learn to fear you.

Disciplinary action literally has longer range than the eyelander AND can hit people from behind if you're standing just close enough.. My favorite soldier loadout is Rocket Jumper + Conch + Disciplinary Action. You get away with WAYYY more than you ever should with that loadout, and getting the conch buff is just hilarious. Give it a shot!

I can explain the BB's seemingly higher crit rate. TF2 has a mechanic whee, if a player is performing well and doing a lot of damage, they will have a higher crit chance. but it's not just from doing damage, it's also boosted by HEALING. so you are damaging the enemy and healing yourself, your random crit chance will be higher than other launchers.

I call it the "Lone Soldier" load out especially on CTF servers where I'm tired of the back and forth and need some alone action and my god it is fun infiltrating the enemy Intel and coming out killing everyone. It feels like something out of Halo when you are escaping.

OK so this is hilarious. I was following your channel around ever since this video came out a year ago (when I believe you had wayyy less subscribers) and that was simply because my brother told me there's a KZfaqr who uses radiohead music in his videos. I love this band so much, and especially weird fishes (this song) I never thought you'd become this big at the tf2 community and it's a blast to see it.

Alright, here are the facts as I understand them. Personally. I see BB + Conch too much in casual. You make a good point, the soldier in question does give up a lot to use it. But when it's a problem is coincidentally where I see it the most, tryhards with a medic up their ass. BB is usually aussie, but they just abuse it to no end. I'm so specific because that's the only time I actually notice it really, because it's well balanced enough to fit into the game. BB + Panic Attack is the gold standard. That's a frontline brawler, have fun reloading though. BB + gunboats is my guilty pleasure. It is too much fun if you play around health packs, roamer is just too much fun with sustainability.

I particularly love to run the half zatoichi along with this loadout, it's amazing to run towards your enemies with the mov. speed buff from the conch active, healing while hitting and also that sweet 100HP when killing someone

I used to use this loadout before realising i was crippling myself from the lack of 1 rocket from the black box. I use stock now.i still use the conch though cuz of its regen is too good

Another thing you should mention about the conch is that it is TERRIFYING when you jump right into a group. You can chuck rockets at targets in breathing distance and just heal your self-damage back, even more if there's multiple enemies cramped up. Great for suicidal group wipes or medic bombs.

technically the black box's 1 rocket downside actually makes it full clip reload faster but you wont be doing that in a fire fight so it isnt really that important

I used the shotgun with the black box, and I found it worked really well with the whole one less rocket thing, but their are easily better options

i'm pretty sure the reason the black box random crits more is because healing is also counted towards the 800 damage dealt the last 30 seconds that increase your crit chance and since you are healing your self quite a bit i assume that's the reason it random crits more.

I tested out this loadout today, I literally dominated 4 players.

I think I know why the black box crits so much is because the more damage you do in a certain amount of time the more likely you will get a crit and the black box allows you to survive and because you heal on hit be more aggressive making your Crit chance higher and higher.

Radiohead+ Tf2 is a combo I didn’t know I needed until now

One thing I've realized recently... This combo also gets EATEN by pyros. You can't Splash Damage them out and hit a direct, because having 175 health means they become a bit of a problem past the 90 damage range. This means they can get up close and wreck you with flames, and since this combo is so common, you don't have a shotgun, AND if one of your rockets get reflected you may not have enough damage output to take them down without reloading, this combo certainly adds to pyro hate.

i think the reason you were doing so many crits is because you spend more time at the frontlines therefore dealing more damage which increases your number of crits you were shooting. and add that up with more rockets is a pretty high chance to crit

i always use the black box and the battalionbackup. Because that +20 with the healing of the Black box is awesome. and for some reason, in my case, i crit more when i use that loadout. aaaaand, because of the -1 rocket , the battalionbackup, can help you escape from that situation.

I play a lot of soldier and I've always avoided this loadout due to the coward stereotype but i might give it a shot next time I'm in a slump! Great content btw, been subbed for a few vids now and you just keep getting better and better, can't wait to see more!

As a libery launcher enjoyer I always forget it's capable of random crits, perhaps random crits have something to do with the amount of rockets you have in your weapon, I remember being surprised how much the stock rocket launcher crits when I switched to it for a day to see other launchers

The increased Crit thing is due to how crits are calculated, its the same reason that medic crits so often and why the half-zatoichi used to crit all the time before random crits were removed from it entirely. You have an improved crit chance the more damage and healing you do, and these stack, so if you are doing both damage and healing you have a much higher crit chance than just standard weapons.

I have a strategy I like using when I play soldier, I usually equip the Airstrike, The conch or B.A.S.E. Jumper, and any melee, then I work on getting 4 kills, then I’d rocket jump into the air and then once I start falling (with the base jumper equipped) I’d activate the parachute, reload, then rain hell on the enemy team, it is so much fun for me. Or if I’m using the conch, I’d get up high, regain my health then do the same thing just without the parachute

I like to use the black box, panic attack and disciplinary action. The black box lets you heal, the panic attack is good for combo'ing which mitigates the decreased ammo capacity and the disciplinary action gets you to the battle faster and makes you less dependent on rocket jumping.

BB + gunboats + escape plan has always been my fav, it lets you suicide bomb with 2 rockets, then either surf your own rockets at point blank or pull out the escape plan to bail. Very fun to rocket jump "through" people. Only downside is when a medic ubers you at 1 rocket left and you suddenly have to pull out the escape plan, awkward.

i remember vividly this one time i was sitting on the cart at last as red and i was bored, and randomly fired a rocket halway across the map sideways to a passage with the black box, the fact that it was a random crit that a spy ran into was just chefs kiss, i proceeded to killbind shortly after

Alternative title: The immoral soldier

Now that I think about it, the black box and gardener might work well together. The whole reason why you don't aggressively jump with the box is that your damage output isn't as good. But the gardener mitigates that, allowing for a somewhat-aggressive black box loadout. The general playstyle of this would be to jump in, garden someone, then retreat on foot while shooting your 2 rockets at enemies to both get them away from you and heal; even potentially killing another player while doing so.

It random crits more for the same reason Medic melee always seems to: the game considers healing to be a type of damage. Since you're healing yourself a lot in addition to doing Soldier damage, it's like doubling up on How Well You're Doing juice in a very bursty manner, which causes way more random crits.
