In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves talks about the best handgun he's ever bought for under $200. James has reviewed guns from BUL Armory in the past, so he was surprised to find a gun called the "BUL Impact" - also known as the "Charles Daly DDA" - for just $179 in surplus condition. This cheap pistol was too much for James to resist, so he bought it and tested it for months before making this review. Is this the best handgun James has ever purchased for under $200? Watch today to find out.

FYI I can't find any of the Bul Impact right now - I bought this one in August. But based on my positive experience, I bought a surplus Bul Cherokee yesterday from Old Western Scrounger (I have nothing to do with them and frankly their website kind of sucks, it's just where I got the Impact from) for $254.95 delivered. I will make a follow up video with it.

Purchased the compact version with the grip extension and full sized magazine years ago. Ran into the magazine scarcity issue. The primary issue is that the BUL M5 9mm utilized Para Ordinance P18 type magazines, so CZ 75 magazines are a no go. It just so happened that I was "competing" with a relatively new, at the time, foreign made Para 9mm clone. However, the actual factory P18 magazine would not fit in the clone. After doing some research and testing, I discovered that the clone was using rebranded Mec-Gar "MG P18 .38S" magazines, which, at the time cost approx $18 for the blued and $19 for nickel. What I subsequently discovered is that the Impact magazine was most certainly a Mec-Gar mag. In fact, the dimensions are identical, except that the Impact magazine is longer and the mag catch is notched higher. The followers while similar are also just a little different. However, the Impact follower in the Mec-Gar P18 mag body cycles and locks the slide back. Hope this helps. Seems like 3D printing might come into play with repop followers and grip extensions?
@wenull3

That mag extension was designed perfectly with the gun. I always hated how companies half ass this idea. I wish BUL or other companies would have kept up with this idea!

Here in Brazil there's a shit ton of "Charles Daly" shotguns. They're seen as better than national made shotguns (like Boito and CBC) but not by many. Plus, we still don't have a locally produced SA shotgun, so it fills a niche gap between cheap CBC Military Pump or double barrel Boito A300s and the expensive semi autos like Mossberg 930 JMs
@PPISAFETY

Wow, that name Boito brings back memories. A Boito single barrel 12 gauge was the first shotgun I ever bought with my own money when I was 14 years old back in 1972. I killed everything from squirrels to deer with that gun. I bought it at a now-defunct hardware store chain. If memory serves, I paid $49 USD for it new. For what it was, I think it held up pretty well as a hunting gun. I had no idea they were still in business.

The first time I encountered this concept was at Detonics in the mid 80's. Some of the guy's there shortened the grip of a Score Master to Combat Master length using the exact same reasoning as Bul. The problem was one of marketing, not practicality. They were funny looking, and the marketing people thought people wouldn't buy them.

I owned a Street master ( the name for the short frame long slide Detonic). Loved it. Still regret trading it in on a Bren Ten. I had one of those “impact” and one “Cherokee”. I’d definitely say it’s a cz clone with a polymer handle. Nothing spectacular. They were quite popular in lower rate security companies (like malls and school security). So if that’s the case, they actually shouldn’t be too beat up. If I’m not wrong, they weren’t actually manufactured in Israel (though the company is Israeli). The slides were made in Italy. Some parts were made as far as in the Philippines. Assembly was done in Israel. That’s just for everyone to know. The guns are reliable and great bang for buck

And I've been seeing Tokarevs with 9mm barrels and bushings for easy caliber swaps. I think that's probably part of it. I wonder if anyone will ever be smart enough to come out with a DIY magazine kit ? Not for Glock because those are plentiful and cheap but maybe for something else that's in high demand and not cheap like CZ, SW, Sig, 2011's Think about it, 80% lowers are successful and most people are not going to want or need or build but a few of those. Magazines on the other hand if you had a kit to build your preferred magazine most people would probably build themselves as many as they could. I could see myself treating it as a hobby much like reloading and decide to go out to the garage today and make a few. It would be awesome !
@mikeborrelli193
@mikeborrelli193 2 жыл бұрын
Due to more complex feed lip geometry then you could imagine, fabricating reliable magazines from a kit would not be viable for even a skilled hobbyist without the body and the feed lips already completed. And at that's point what is left to be completed other than installing the follower, spring, and base..

I like it. One of the reasons I'm still rocking my Ruger P95 DC 9mm after 25 years. Runs flawlessly, mags still available and the only thing I've replaced recently after several decades, is the mag springs. Replacing the worn, weak springs with Wolff Springs 10% extra power to mitigate spring set from being constantly fully loaded. At my age the gun is obviously going to outlast me.

Sticking with the trend of low cost discontinued guns, you should try to get your hands on a Beretta Model 70s. I inherited one from my great uncle and it's a blast to use at the range and shockingly accurate for how small it is. If you do get one, just be aware of which version you get because the main difference is what mags it can use (to the point that mags are sold as x version and y version)

The best cheap handgun I've ever bought was was my Baikal IJ-70, a Russian commercial Makarov. I spent $400 on it, but it came with 2 mags, a holster, and about 500 rounds of ammo. That was peak ammo shortage, by the way, so I figure a good $300 of that was the ammo.

Looks a lot like a Turkish SAR B6P, also a good inexpensive gun. The safety is identical. The compact is a great fit in the hand Edit; OK now that you showed the pink one, that's 99% a SAR B6P compact. SAR must have copied the design. Only difference I can really see is the stippling and the holes in the trigger guard, otherwise they are the same gun. Even the beavertail is the same

It's because The SAR B6P is a rebranded Tanfoglio Force (Tanfoglio supplied the parts until SAR decided to manufacture all in-house, but the model remained the same), like the Armscor MAPP or the Baby Eagle Polymer for that matter. Unlike most people I’ve actually played with these years ago, my long gone friend Barry burton owned a pawn shop here in Kentucky back in the 90’s into the 2000’s. He used to try and push these stupid looking things every chance he got!! Only because he bought several cases of em off some shady cat so shadowed you only see his bone white hand as he took Barry’s cash in some back alley, laughing methodically as he ran away! Leaving the boxes of “crap” in his wake. Truthfully tho, only “wannabe gangsters” and easily persuaded individuals bought these. I played with several identical to yours James and of course the hot pink and plush purple ones, I couldn’t resist 🥰 haha sadly Barry’s gone and those several hundred bulls got sold at auction faster than a pedo getting run out of town. Thanks for the flashback Jimmy 😉👍🏼

I feel I have a similar situation regarding the mags with the P365. I bought the P365 originally with the standard short grip. Mine came with 3 12-round mags that have extenders. After selling my P365 to a family member in order to buy a P365X (w/ straight trigger and optics cut), I swapped out the standard 365X & XL longer grip module (12 round flush) for the shorter grip module of 365 (10 round flush). Not sure why they didn't have it standard for the P365X and drive folks to the only slightly longer barrel of the XL for those wanting the longer grip module. Anyway, I carry flush with 10 rounds and have the extended 12 rounds to give a longer grip, if desired, or for backup. Thanks for your reviews!
