Hi Neil Once again, a great video - extremely useful. As you mention, I am exactly one of those people who has never really understood LOD/View, and was creating drawing views of portions of an assembly in really cumbersome way. And just 20 minutes later, all is clear! Please keep up the excellent work, and please consider doing a video on the baffling styles and standards editor. A thousand thanks!! Stephen

At the end you mention changing the appearance of the material, that nobody would prob ever want that. Actually that's something we're exploring. We are trying to figure out how to create a view rep in the .ipt (material color changes) that would then be available as a toggled view rep in the assembly that contains those .ipt's. Any direction would be appreciated. Also we love your videos! Bravo!

Thanks, TFI CAD Tips! Very useful. We use View reps quite a bit and sometimes use the level of detail. We have been having trouble checking stuff back into Vault due to the level of details and this highlights why. We use the level of detail to suppress parts which aren't needed but potentially be needed later on in a design. (Our designs are created by iLogic driven Skeletons which populate the parts required and suppress the ones which aren't). We also have rules which pump down information from the top assemblies down to the lower parts. So.....I guess if we have a Level of detail in use, and change the information in the top level assembly and it pumps it down to the lower level parts / assemblies, the parts which are suppressed are updating but technically haven't been opened. So, those parts would require opening and updating and then checking in? Instead of using suppression for unwanted parts, I guess changing the unwanted parts to a ''reference part'' instead and then turning the visibility off would work better? Also have you experienced any updating issues when you use view reps of sub assemblies in main assemblies and then the main assemblies in drawings? We can change visibilities of parts within the model view reps and make sure all the models are updated and showing what we want on the drawing but the drawing view doesn't update (even though it is linked). this results in what we use as a technical term and ''Fudge'' it. Good to know you experience the crashes with 2016 too. Sorry for being long winded

I am working with Dynamic Configurations and have learned that you can simply delete your bad Levels of Detail instead of trying to fix them and the View, it is just too ridiculous. Instead, only "make Views" just like you said. But, once you have made/updated your existing Drawing Views, simply Copy to Level of Detail and make sure the name is the same as the old LOD that you are trying to replace on your drawing, which is fullproof if you only copy views to make LOD's. This is vital if you want to save space. The ONLY disadvantage to this is if you have "Fake Parts" in your BOM, when it updates to new LOD the BOM loses the fake part, but will keep any edits or customization to the BOM. I am going to make a screencast to show this. Thank you for tuning me into the sheer power of the "View Copy to LOD" when in drawings and models.

I am trying to find the best way to do this and I am torn between making this an ipart assembly or a level of detail, however, when I tried to do this in as an ipart, my parts list along with mates exceeded Excels maximum level. Hi l love watching your tutorial on Inventor, one thing you mentioned to be wrong is my daily practice handling large assemblies, using LOD and I am inserting, changing and changing as i go along and although it seems time-consuming to suppress the new inserted parts in LOD, it still pays off in term of low updating time, fast updating of the drawing and so on. So in a project of 6 weeks time, I spare at least a week time using LOD's. How about that? Indeed I do copy view rap to LOD with the same name!

Hey. Here is some Dutch guy. Superb videos. Learning really a lot of them. Some thing I find useful of LOD's is that you can link them over different assemblies. Say you have an empty assembly and place two assemblies in it which have the same named LOD available. Then you can link them in this new assembly. Is this also possible with representations? I am also curious to how to use the selection priority button at the top of the inventor screen. I actually never use it. Thanx in advance.

Dear Neil. I use view representation all so for different colors. For instants when i design z skid i use valves witch are the same for the primary circuit en for the secondary circuit.i give the same valve a different color and with viewrep i can give it the color of the circuit that i put it in.same thing for the positionrep i can put the actuator in the position that is necessary.So a video on these two aspects would be great!Francis

I was wondering if you could do a video on bill of materials. I’m using inventor 2017 and have a pretty large assembly. I made an exploded view in presentation and want to make a drawing for different sections of my assembly. I’ve broken my assembly into 4 different exploded sections and want to make a bill of materials for each of those. I’ve used the snapshot feature that is in 2017 to capture and have different views of the snapshot. However when I use bill of materials it does the BOM for the whole assembly. Do you have any tips or comments regarding this?
@waynehayes7942
@waynehayes7942 5 жыл бұрын
@Gabriel Fricke To avoid this scenario I tend to create a representation view from the main assembly of the parts I want to occur in the BOM of the drawing. Double click on the parts list and go to the filter tab and in "define filter item" select "assembly view representation" and select the appropriate one you created. This will only show the parts of the representation in the BOM :)

And THIS, people, is why Inventor will never match Solidworks. Not saying that is a bad program but sooo much easier in SW. The reason I'm here is because I'm a Solidworks user for years and just got a new job using Inventor. I've used Inventor before and know a little more than just the basic. Anyways, they told me to use and existing Inventor huge assembly to create a new one with just some minor changes. Well, because whoever created the original one was the only one who knew how to use these features, it has become a total nightmare since no one else seems to understand why. Anyways, you live and learn I guess. Great tutorial by the way.

Hi, thanks for your videos, I just love them, they are so helpfull!! Could you please do a video on how one would do a view of a single part? So what I need, a single part; say a flange OD, ID, 4 holes on pcd. this needs to be on a drawing to go to the cutting company to laser cut OD,ID and 4 holes. Then the same part needs to have a machining detail for say an o-ring groove to be machined in it. So I need one part but two drawings with different details. at the moment i am creating two parts for this as the machining (o-ring groove) shows up in the DXF i send to the cutting company and they then either try to cut it or get very confused. this would really help if I can create one part with different levels in different drawings. from the video above it only seems possible in an assembly. but i need to be able to do this in a single part. THANKS!!

Is there a way to have inventor automatically recognize the part count when it changes per the view rep. For example 36 screws in the entire model, only 8 shown in the view rep. Parts list shows 36, shop scratching their heads and yes, I understand you can overwrite the parts list. Just wonder if that is "the" way to go... any advice appreciated, luv the the channel!

At 14:38... why dont you use isolate command instead of using selection - inv. selection - visibility?
@Neil3D
@Neil3D 8 жыл бұрын
Because anyone new to the program will have then learned the invert selection technique, which can be used in a load of other different situations. Whereas isolate on the other hand is pretty self explanatory, and as I can't realistically explain every way to do the same thing I have to pick the one I feel suits and run with it!

Neil, i have a big question and i don't know if you still will see this. But is is possible to make a level of detail with an assembly with a folded plate in it. I want to make a subsection on my drawing with an unfolded version of the plate.
@Neil3D
@Neil3D 5 жыл бұрын
Yea that's more complicated than it should be. You can't use the flat pattern in an assembly, so you'd need to use unfold in sheet metal and then create an iPart with both versions, one folded the other unfolded, then use an iAssembly to have two versions of the assembly and place two views, it's made really complicated because it's the same IPT file but you're wanting it physically modelled in two different ways... so it requires a lot of fiddling!
@peace40wnage79

TFI - CAD & Technology For Industry thanks for the info, I have allready found a workaround by just placing the unfolded plate part into the drawing.
