( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Volkswagen Passat Turbo Diesel TDI is the only front wheel drive mid-sized sedan with a diesel engine and a dual clutch gearbox that you can buy in America. In other words, it has no direct competition. The 2012 Nissan Altima has been around for a while. Nissan gave the car a 2.5 liter engine mated to a CVT transmission to help improve gas mileage. While it also competes in the mid-sized sedan class, it due to be replaced this year. So of course the obvious TFLcar question is which one of these cars is after to 60 MPH. Watch the video to find out.

That's a great observation. It could be the stop watch but to be honest we went back and tested some of the cars we reviewed with a stopwatch with the SoloDL GPS and the times were remarkably similar. 0-60 MPH is all about torque and the Passat TDI has plenty.

I agree with you 100%. I have a 2008 Passat 2.0T Komfort and it's an awesome car. Mazda RX8, BMW 325, Lexus IS250, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Avalon... I blew them away at standing red light to green light, of course with the Launch control and in Sport Mode. I saw the driver of the RX8 in my rear view mirror in disbelief got pissed of and he's driving a two door sports car.

Alex, I'd like your opinion on which year of Jetta TDI in the 2011-2014 year group, is most reliable. I'm considering buying a used one. Also, what significant maintenance issues do you know of on the Jetta TDI? In general, German vehicles seem to be well engineered and reliable. My 2004 GTI VR6 is dependable, powerful, fun to drive and easy to maintain. The draw back is fuel consumption. I only fill it with 91 octane, as recommended by VW. Unfortunately, 91 is now 1 cent more expensive than diesel in my area and will likely continue to rise. I hate to sell the GTI but need a more economical car on the highway and the Jetta looks like it might be the right trade-in.

I've test-driven an Altima 2.5 and, believe me, there's no way one of these with CVT is going to get to 60 in 7.5 sec unless you're accelerating downhill. That 236 ft-lbs or torque coupled to the DSG transmission in the Passat may well be the difference here.

I always enjoy your videos and family of reviewers - I think other KZfaq channels should follow your lead and have multiple hosts. As far as comparing the Altima (gas) with the Passat (diesel); that's like comparing apples with oranges, These cars are in completely different classes. You should have compared the Passat TSI (gas) to the Altima. Then it would have been a better comparison. The Passat TDI is in a class of its own, maybe compare it to other diesels or possibly hybrids. I own a 2014 Passat TDI that I've owned since 2013 and I even chose to have VW modify the emissions to comply with the EPA. It's the best car I've ever owned and it's given me over 100K trouble free miles. I didn't buy the car for it's 0-60 times and I doubt that anyone looking into these cars will be focused on 0-60 or 1/4 miles times either. I bought my Passat for the gas mileage and the fact that it is not a slug like most hybrids. The Passat TDI is no rocket but the acceleration is more than adequate.

turbo,supercharged, or n/a are all affected by altitude because the air has less oxygen in it. no matter what way you decide to bring it into the combustion chamber, it still will not be as dense.... now I am sure if you turned up the boost psi by 17% it would make up for it since there is 17% less oxygen at 1 mile above sea level

To get the Altima to go off the line you truly have to quickly punch it to get the wheels to spin a tad, in lane changes you have to hold the revs at around 3k rpms for about 2 seconds thebPUNCH and trust me that’s how you drive the Altima :P

38 sounds better and yes the EPA sometime under rates cars...I just think that a CVT isnt a good transmission. Its loud under acceleration and it feels quite weird to drive one since it wont shift unless you let off the throttle. I rented a Sentra and did not like that CVT. I think Americans should embrace diesel! It has tons of potential!

Don't forget the Passat is a turbodiesel engine. Gasoline engines operate at a very specific ratio of fuel and air. At high altitudes,there are fewer molecules of air per cubic foot. gasoline engines have to add less fuel to keep the ratio perfect, which affects performance. Diesel engines run lean so they don't experience same power loss at lower oxygen concentrations.

Can't find the article you're referring to but I did find this, from the new Motor Trend article about the 2013 Altima 2.5: "...as-tested four-cylinder acceleration is a full second quicker from 0-60 mph: 7.4 for 2013 versus 8.4 seconds for the earlier comparison car." I can believe 8.4 for the 2010 because the Altima was noticeably slower off-the-line than the 190hp Accord EX-L I ended up buying. That being said, it's obvious there's something wrong with the review's numbers...
6 жыл бұрын
My 07 Altima 2.5 CVT does 0-60 in apprx 8 secs.... I think Motor Trend's 2013 they tested had the 6 speed manual not the CVT, but I could be wrong. 7.4 would be a little too quick for the CVT. It's still a decent car and has plenty of power for daily driving, just don't expect to do much drag racing with it lol

Check your area for diesel prices as the Passat would be the best of those (I'm assuming an Accord). Altima is more in the Civic/Jetta class. So the Passat is going to give you a more premium feel. Go out and drive them as they're all good, but have different driving characteristics.

If you're buying a passat or an altima, why would you care how fast it goes from 0-60? Neither of them are cars built to muscle their way around the road. They are economy cars, built for normal consumers who want to use them every day and feel comfortable that they can rely on their car to get to where they need to go. They are not built to drive like a porche or a mustang.

The TDI volkswagon engine has a load of power. only 140hp but you have to understand it's a diesel. All of it's torque is available at VERY low rpms. I'm talking at just 1600rpms you will have more than 200ft pounds of torque. Where as in a gasoline engine you have to rev it up into the low-mid 5k rpms at the very least to get some torque. And even then it's not as much as the diesel. And to top it off, VW is upgrading this engine to 177hp this year. The torque figures I don't remember though.

I have a '11 Altima Hybrid and I've beat many 4 cylinder cars including a Toyota Camry Hybrid off the line, I think its 7.3 Seconds for the Hybrid. So that Altima must be messed up to only do it in 13 seconds......And the regular gas Altimas have a fair amount of off the line juice due to the CVT transmission not having to find a gear, so the engine Revs higher......

@nmende00
@nmende00 11 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with the Altima except that it's a gas engine at high altitude.Diesels run lean anyway, so low oxygen high altitude is no problem. Gas engines need a constant fuel to air ratio, so the altima has to reduce the amount of fuel injected to compensate for low oxygen levels, hence losing power and the almost doubling of 0-60 time. Add hills, and the higher torque of the passat allows it to maintain speed more easily than the altima

And another thing, why is it amusing that the Passat sells less than an 11 grand car? The Passat is premium value while the Versa is a subcompact that honestly is quite cheap. I am not trying to bash Nissan by no means I think they are great cars for people who arent a whole lot interested in driving ecstasy except for the GTR. 48mpg? Are you sure? Thats a bit high and I know the Passat can get over 50 since my uncle got 52mpg with his passat sel tdi dsg going from Washington to penticton BC Canada. The Nissan might be lower maintenance but you have to admit, it wont last as long as a diesel. Doesnt matter what brand you buy from, Ram, Ford, Chevrolet, Mercedes, Audi, anything, a traditional diesel will outlast a gas engine. My dad is a mechanic and hates VW's but admits they will outlast a Japanese gas car

any car maker can build a vehicle made solely for raw power. But when it comes to reliabilty, durability, AND power combined, German imports are not quite there yet and never was. BMW and Benz is famous for it's history and name. It's for people who want to be respected rather then drive something practical. The luxury features you see in luxury German imports have been matched or surpassed by other non-german car makers. Superior engineering over desperate attempt to be recognized anyday.
