Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I think the model Y is a dog. And not a pretty one. The only nice looking Tesla is the Model S. The rest look really boring.

@@kratosdisciple4637 Ioniq 5 is a compliance vehicle only available in CARB states like the Kona EV and old Ioniq that came before. If Hyundai wants us to talk more about them maybe they could start by selling them nationwide and in significant numbers. I doubt I could even buy an Ioniq 5 in any reasonable time frame even if I lived in California. I get it, the 800V charging is awesome, V2L rocks and it looks great but what does it matter if I can’t buy one?

For me personally two things I like the best about our Model Y. First is the navigation system. I’m not the best at navigating and I can just type in the address and it gives me turn my turn directions with no problems. Much better than any other car I’ve owned. Second is the sound system. Fantastic. Driving the Model Y never fails to put a smile 😃 on my face.

I'm a huge fan of older designs. I've had a couple Challengers, a couple Jeep Wranglers, etc. I just want all the guts from something like a Model S, wrapped in a Challenger style skin. That would be perfection to me. I am intrigued by the Mach-E because it uses some of the Mustang styling cues, but they should put that hardware in a Mustang body (and make it a hatch again).

I have this vehicle for 1 year, W/O performance and with FSD. It is fantastic. I have nearly 13k miles with only one issue related to the CPU that needed replacement. After one trip from RI to MD and another from RI to FL all range anxiety is cured. The charging network and the ability to plan your route for convenient charging/rest stops, makes the trip a pleasure. I love the white interior and find with the (Covid) sanitary wipes I keep in the car a quick swipe of the seats keeps them pristine. BTW I had a Mercedes GLC before this and the GLC was lacking. The GLC’s turbo charged 4 cylinder was grossly underpowered and the turbo lag made me fear cutting into traffic. Compared to the Audi Q5D before it and the Tesla MY after, the GLC was a disappointing performer.

From what I've seen, it's getting better... but yeah, don't rush until Tesla has largely sorted things out. Even though they're usually simple things like panel gaps, it's not fun to have to take your car in for fixes almost as soon as you get it. Thankfully, I hear people love their Teslas to bits once they clear those initial hurdles... but there are hurdles.

If I had that I'd get like a 2015-2019 diesel BMW or VW that get probably 1000 km per tank! Lol They're the best known for range like that.
@dzelpwr
@dzelpwr 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! hah I've got an old diesel VW for exactly that. 1999-2004ish Golf/Jetta has a neat trick where you can vent the air out of the top of the tank and fill it all the way up the filler neck. I have an '01 Golf at the moment, I can usually fit 15.5-16 gallons in it after the fuel light comes on and continuing to drive for a little ways. Did a couple small fuel-economy minded upgrades to it. Mind you, this is the 5 speed manual transmission. I fit the larger injection pump from the automatic transmission ALH code TDI manufactured from 1999-2003, a slightly hotter thermostat from Mahle/Behr (stock is 87 C, new one is 92 C), I put a tune on it (stock injectors still, but again, with the bigger pump) and I put a taller 5th gear in the transmission. Which, niftily enough on the old 5 speeds, does NOT require transmission removal to do. Stock 5th gear is a 0.756:1, new 5th gear is 0.658:1. Cruising around the 55 MPH country roads doing as much over the speed limit as traffic allows (up and down some grades, 65, upto 75-80 temporarily in uphill passing zones trying to get around the slow traffic), it averages 52 MPG. I can go 250 miles before the needle MOVES OFF THE FULL MARK. It's near 500 miles by the time it reads half tank. Fuel light comes on a little above 800 miles total on average. The WORST mileage I've gotten from that car was 37.5 MPG, still well over 500 miles on a single fill up. That trip was doing 80 MPH into a stiff headwind for 3 hours, followed by a couple more hours of going from sea level to over 4400 feet elevation, then on the way back down, I happened across a couple cars who wanted to go substantially faster speeds than what I had been doing, and I decided to tag along... And continued going that speed through the valley while there was no traffic. I won't be giving that little car up anytime soon. But for shorter, everyday stuff, sure, an electric car has a big appeal. But for long distance trips, kind of difficult to give up that sort of range, especially if you're just trying to get through the trip as fast as possible.

I have had a Tesla model Y long range for about five months now and agree with most of what you have said about the car. Our model Y drives beautifully. I love the braking that comes from taking your foot off the throttle. I like the way the steering is precise and accurate and gives a good connection to the road. The ride absolutely should be adjustable. From the factory to me the ride is too stiff. And we did not get the bigger wheels and thinner tires to get ride as good as possible. The big sunroof with no shade is a big problem. I don't have much hair and the sun just beats down on it unless I put on a hat. Even then the top of the passenger compartment gets hot. And then there is the departure from reality on the range estimator that comes with the car. On our car the range estimation is way too optimistic. If you drive with the flow of traffic you need to take at least 20% off the car's estimator. My experience is that if you go the speed limit on highways and maybe up to 75 mph you need to deduct 25%. If you strictly stick to the speed limits then maybe you only have to reduce the estimate by 20%. This issue needs to be fixed! The model Y to me is a really well designed and proportioned smallish SUV with lots of room for people and things. It is to me just the right size. In my opinion the car is very good looking inside and out. We did not have any problems with bad paint, poor fitting panels, or upholstery not fitting right. A few more niggles are. Carpet behind the second row of seats should be better quality. And there is no rubber insert for it like in the first and second row of seats. The heater and AC should be easier to adjust without going into the center screen. Not hooking to Apple Car Play is not a good thing. The sound system would be easier if it worked with Car Play easily. Oh yeah, this thing is really fast. Faster than I normally use these days. But I have had a bunch of cars over the years including some really fast ones like a 911 and a 12 cylinder Ferrari and this thing is amazingly fast and comfortable. Just wish it had a bit more range and a sunroof shade.

I hate that you guys keep saying the range is amazing, it’s not. In the real world, The Mach E will go at least 20 miles further. Many different channels and publications have proven this. The model Y is more efficient(not by a huge margin), but the Mach E makes up for that with a substantially bigger battery. There’s plenty of competition. Don’t forget the Ioniq 5 and the EV6, with their 800v architecture….they’re at least 2-3 years ahead of everyone else in the segment. People are getting 10-20% in 19 minutes or less and completely full in under 50.

A lot of the complaints about the wear on the upholstery and - fairly easy to fix. For example the piano black I would cover in that in Matt grey low adhesive backed vinyl sheet cut to shape. I use one called graphite which has a subtle chequered pattern. Go for black upholstery to reduce the appearance of dirt and wear. I will also cover the lower door cards in the same adhesive sheet to address shoe scuff marks that occur when you get out of the car. It’s much easier to wipe down vinyl and if it does get too badly scuffed, quicker and much cheaper to replace

For video content I would say pick whatever electric car you think you can actually get into the soonest. I think the lightning would be my first choice since it would be a truck rather than a car you guys have done a lot of those. You could do all kinds of testing with it both daily driver but also Ike Gauntlet stuff which would make it interesting. Other than that I would say the ionic 5 or the Kia ev6. Both of those are going to be very different in styling. Bunch of people have already done id4 stuff I don't see the point in doing that. Although I think honestly it's probably the better competitor to the test the model Y not in performance, but definitely more practical and quieter and nicer to drive from everything I've read. Charging network isn't a problem quite frankly you guys are the only people that seem to have problems with chargers. Also factor in Volkswagen throws in 3 years unlimited mileage of charging it's certainly a good financial incentive for most people but I don't think the car would make a good video topics for you guys

Tesla inflates their range numbers SIGNIFICANTLY. From reviews on KZfaq, the Mustang and VW both get their promised range, which means the Mustang in it's long range variant, I believe, goes further per charge.

If I were to purchase a new vehicle and wanted an all BEV I'd go for this car for the performance, the dual motor AWD, versatility, space etc., and because of the Tesla charging network. However, I can't justify buying any type of new vehicle over $35K. I enjoy all your channels and the info we get from them, thanks.

Not sure if this has been covered in the comments but the problem with the app having to be open is most likely because you have to go into the phone settings and set the app to "always on" or whatever your phone calls it. I had the same problem on my Samsung phone with a Model 3 and after fixing this in the settings I have not had any issues.

Excellent review/video. Thanks. I have been researching the EV market and I have one question. Why is it that virtually all of them have a glass roof without the ability to open them and no shade. How good is that glass when dealing with the heat of the sun in the summer and the rays beating down on your head. I really like the Y except for that one issue. Can you please advise. Thanks. Sam
@andrewt9204
@andrewt9204 3 жыл бұрын
The glass gets really hot sitting in the sun. It’s like a radiant ceiling panel. I need to wear my hat to keep my head from sweating. However, after driving a few miles it cools to near ambient and it’s fine. I did order a sun shade for mine so we’ll see how that works. In the winter time though I imagine the warm glass will be a big benefit, we’ll see in about 4 months. Even though it looks neat and provides more headroom, I wish they offered an insulated metal roof, because I’d have chosen that. I have a Camry with a sun roof and 98% of the time it’s closed with the sun shade closed. I usually open it in the winter to let more sunlight in.

My wife and I took a day to drive the ID4, Volvo CX40 recharge, and model y. We thought the Model Y was the worst looking of the bunch, but ordered one anyway for the charging network and range over the other two. Thought about the Mach E, but with how hard it is to get ahold of right now, dealerships are marking them up outrageously. Plus Fords that aren't trucks seems to have reliability issues, looking at my sister's suv and all the Bronco recalls.

Was nervous about watching this video since I own a 2018 P3D-, but luckily I have all of the pros you mentioned without any of the cons. Manual trunk. 18 in aero wheels. Black interior. Wrapped center console. Aftermarket top glass shade screen. I use an android phone and I never have phone key issues. Did I miss anything? Also: gotta disagree with you on the comment about the Model y being a perfected model 3. I think the only benefit the Y offers is the rear hatch. The ride height thing really only matters if your old and or crippled (sorry, Tommy's Dad). I prefer the low slung nibble (and imo) sportier driving position of the 3. Plus I think the body dimensions are better proportioned on the 3. Much more handsome. Thanks guys.

Only reason I went with the Mach-E and not the Model Y is some of the common features I really wanted that Tesla just still hasn't implemented for some reason...Rear cross-traffic alerts, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, and a 360 birds eye camera. And of course there's the $7,500 tax credit. If in 3 years when my lease is up Tesla has these things I will definitely consider one.

FYI, IONIQ 5 vs TESLA MODEL Y... : Tesla great job, max speed, range especially leveraging its shape and weight. Still prefer, being in Europe, comfort. 99% of my trips are within 200kms one way. With the Hyundai IONIQ 5, I do look forward to ventilated seats, Android Auto, the roomy and comfortable interior, and HUD. Also like reclining seats with foot rest and reclining console for arms rest, all electronic aids especially against collisions, automated parking (Executive version), blind spot cams on dashboard when turning, V2L, sun shades integrated in back doors, electric sunroof shade, wide space available inside with good visibility through the back window etc. And the obviously efficient 400V to 800V internal battery inverter for fast charging. Also 5 year car warranty illimited kms (Max 80 000 for Tesla... Reliability issues?), and 8 year battery warranty (same as Tesla). Comment by Park Shawn translating from Korean to English this video : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qL1ydK2mxLmYnJ8.html Ionic 5 LR and Model Y LR both have similar spec including weight, battery sizes. Details can be found on google. Here are some highlights from the conclusion they brought up at the end of the video. 1. Both car's AVG speed were about 100KM/h (Highway drive) 2. Both car's A/C and other convenience functions(like Highway drive assistance for Ionic 5, Auto Pilot for Model Y and etc.) were always on during the test. 3. 4 drivers drove about 100km per person and checked the remaining battery at designated location. 4. Both car have shown slightly poor battery performance than usual because of the weather condition (rain) 5. By just looking at the specification, Model Y can drive 141km more than Ionic 5. However the actual drive test have shown that the difference were only about 60~70km. This experiment have shown that IONIC 5's driving range is little longer than what Hyundai advertised. 6. They have concluded that both Ionic 5 and Model Y can drive from Seoul to Busan. The distance between those two cities are about 350km. Hope this helps.

I appreciate you filmed over a year ago, and the focus is the US market. The Model Y on this side of the pond has strong competition in the recent Topgear review it was compared to 10 similar models, once the prestigious stuff, Mercedes BMW Audi Lexus and Jaguar were removed, in the awards it was down to the Model Y, Ford Mustang and Skoda Enyaq. The Model Y was there because of the Supercharger network, which having opened it, for other EVs which is outstanding. I always wondered was that the true strategy for Musk, the batteries and the network and ultimately dump the cars. Have a look a Norway, the model Y is leading the models, but VW group is leading the brand and the fast sale is the Skoda Enyaq. Also acid text question which car would you put your wife and children in, your most precious cargo, one of the safest prestigious marks or the Model y.
