@@MRMechanicRC the ones build in the US? Absolutely! 😂👍 - up to 60% of the parts are different, because the basic cars need to be cheaper. Other brands are even more extreme, the VW Passat isn’t even the same car and has other dimensions than the german/European model. Absolutely bonkers. There are models that are basically the same, that are the cars which are reliable. The car wizard here on KZfaq (among others) made a great video which models to buy and which are just money pits….

@@The_Ed_Hodgers glad to hear that, Chevys are good but I still stand behind Mercedes. I own a Chevy Silverado that’s been a good truck but has some major flaws. The oil pick pump o ring can fail leading to low oil pressure which can cause bad problems. That being said my Chevy has cost me more to date then any of the Mercedes I’ve owed over the years. AMG has been designed so well I found the motors user friendly and cheap to maintain if you do you’re own work. I love LS motors for the fact it’s cheap to mod but things seem to fail more often in gm products than my Mercedes that I drove more often. My chevys constantly have bad alternators, power steering pumps, valve cover gaskets, ball joints, and other major chassis work needed. My Mercedes have stood the rest of time and abuse by me and continues to hold up under normal maintenance and repairs.

Kinda ironic cause Mrs. Benz loaded up the kids and drove one a good long ways to demonstrate it’s reliability. Iirc it was like 150 miles or something. Anyways, that belt or a belt broke at one point (not really Benz’s fault besides choosing a crappy belt supplier) and Mrs. Benz used her stockings in place of the belt and made the trip successfully demonstrating that the contraption was hardy enough that a woman and kids could travel the same distance in a day without breaking downs as a horse drawn buggy could travel over several days.

When these cars were new, few owners drove them themselves. Those who did packed plenty of provisions and wrote out their will before starting out. There's a place in England called the Haynes International Motor Museum where you can service vehicles of this age. It's in Sparkford near the town of Yeovil and (for military types) not to far from RAF Yeovilton home of the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Worth a look!

This particular car was in fact designed to be operated and enjoyed by its owner, though it would be maintained and started by a valet. They were based on the light two wheeled horse drawn carts called a “gig” which gentlemen drove themselves for recreation or casual social visits. Later “phaetons” were cars designed for a chauffeur to operate.

As someone who spent a year driving my standard riding mower by maxing out the speed and using the brake (really more of a clutch) to control my speed to corner but go fast when i needed to, that car needed a LOT of maintenance. That clutch probably won't last long.

I built a beautiful scale model of this car. Mr. Benz had no confidence in it, repeatedly altering. His wife Bertha snuck herself and her two sons and took it for a 120 mile ride. Up hills, the boys would have to push. When they got back he added a second gear for hills. 0.88 horsepower, top sped of 10 mph.
