My buddy had a maroon one of these with a small lift and 31” tires. I saw him hit some hard trails and it performed pretty damn well. We all gave him shit for driving it but it actually was a pretty cool looking and comfortable jeep. I would never knock it if I saw one on a trail.

I actually owned a 2011 Liberty. I loved it. I lifted it 3 inches with an Old Man Emu kit. I had a custom front winch bumper with a 10k winch. It had 33's, full skids, and rock sliders. It was a UNIT! The factory break assisted "lockers" worked pretty much flawlessly. Yes the mileage sucked dirt, especially after the lift and larger tires, but o loves every second of it.

@jupyder4838 11 ай бұрын
Damn, how did you get 33's on it? I had a 2011 as well! I had a 3 inch lift but could only fit 31's without serious rubbing - you had to have beat the hell out of those pinch welds....That thing must have been awesome!
@GettinDurrty
@GettinDurrty 11 ай бұрын
@jupyder4838 It took some finessing. First had custom wheels with -24 offset. Second I had to hammer the pinch welds flat and trim a ton of the inner liner. The bumper I had already got rid of the front issues for the most part.

We own an '08 KK...its my daughters high school & college car. We've owned it for 10 years now and been very happy with its reliability. She has 225,000 miles on it and it just keeps going, its been an excellent vehicle. Terrible mpg, but great in the snow etc. I have to say, that having owned 2 Commanders now and 1 Liberty, both models have been extremely reliable. I have far more repair expense into my 2012 FJ Cruiser than I have in all of the repairs to the Commanders & Liberty combined.

Sunroof leaked like a sieve. HA! But it was a fun vehicle. My son was in a major traffic accident with it but walked away without a scratch on him. I always said people were too hard on the liberty. I had an 06 and an 08. I really loved the 06 off road. I took it all over rampart range and Colorado Passes. I put a lot of miles on both Liberties and never really had any major issues. As a young military kid for 10k I really got my money out of it. Now days they are a true 4x4 SUV with a real frame that will do the majority of trails bone stock. I totally agree. Bout time they got some off road love with all these pretend SUVs we have now.

My sister's car in high school and college in the late 2000s was a used 2003 Jeep Liberty. It was a terrific and reliable vehicle for her. The extra height and 4wd got my sister out of a few jams since she was kind of a clumsy driver. My dad even liked it for "going to town duty" on the farm as it could just as easily get across a field as run errands to pick up parts from the store.

The engine was a very old design so not great on mpg, but gave me zero trouble. The biggest troubles I had was I went through 5 window regulators during those 10 years. I had the first 3 regulators replaced for free by Carmax, and for a $15,000 vehicle I am not complaining.

I love this type of series, some of your best content IMO. I’d love to see you do a used off road crossover series. No low range, vehicles like a used Pilot, R51 Pathfinder and maybe an older Outback or Tribeca with some mods as overland/camping adventure type vehicles. Like the full size compare you guys did but with smaller and more road ready vehicles with a split focus for on road and off road capability.
@cintocrunch
@cintocrunch 11 ай бұрын
@pro4xtrdpro376 I know I said no low range. I know the Pilot is surprisingly capable and has decent aftermarket so I think it would be fun to see how it compares on road and off road to an R51 with its IRS and more on road focus vs the R50 which had a shorter wheelbase and the solid rear axle.
@cintocrunch
@cintocrunch 11 ай бұрын
@pro4xtrdpro376 I disagree but it would be fun to see someone compare the two. My R50 was lifted and had the rear diff out of a Desert Runner so it did very well off road. The R51 didn’t have a great aftermarket at the time and the extra length/wheelbase and IRS made it worse off road even though it had a frame. Maybe since I sold my R50 the R51 aftermarket has exploded. I always wanted a V8 R51. My R50 was a 2001, so it had the VQ with a big power bump and mine was a 5 speed manual.

Really good review of this Liberty and comments about affordability. Some of the same comments can be applied to the Wrangler Sport Jeeps. The Sports are much cheaper than a Rubicon. They can go anywhere this Liberty can and more. They don't cost a fortune (compared to a Rubicon) and it doesn't hurt as much to feel it get pin striped. Plus the newer Sports are "newer" and thus more reliable on long trips. My Sport with an EcoDiesel cost $42,000 plus tax. I upgraded from 31 inch tires to 33 inch tires and added a 2 1/2 inch lift for $3,800 which keeps my cost less than $46,000 again not including tax. I have only one vehicle so I need the reliability but I love to go places cars can't go.

We have a 2009 Liberty Sport that we got back in 2015. It has a 2.5 inch leveling/lift kit and is running 285/70R17 (33”x11”) all terrain tires. I had to trim the fender flares and cut and fold the pinch weld on both sides to keep the tires from rubbing but the increased height and ground clearance is worth it. The 210 horsepower 3.7 liter V6 surprisingly turns the 33” tires without hesitation. We recently passed 200,000 miles and are now just over 203,000 miles. I have a cold start video and a video of it rolling over to 200,000 miles on my channel. I honestly was surprised at how well the engine has performed without any major mechanical problems other than regular wear and tear and maintenance. But it does have it’s issues and the biggest one isn’t limited to the Liberty. The TIPM (fuse box) has had issue affecting the door locks, windshield wipers and occasionally the radio. Millions of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models suffer from the same problem. We’re lucky so far that it hasn’t affected any drivetrain or engine components but it can affect anything powered through the TIPM. The lifters are just now starting to rattle and make noise and I’m pretty sure the crankshaft bearings are worn and rattling when the engine is cold. The catalytic converters need replaced and we’re burning a little oil mostly when idling for a while. Despite all of that it still feels strong and capable. I’m changing the transmission filter, fluid and installing a new transmission oil pan and gasket this weekend as part of the regular maintenance. The CV axles and front wheel bearings are next to be replaced along with the rear control arms. Overall it’s been a surprisingly good vehicle. I didn’t think it would get much passed 125,000 miles before having some catastrophic breakdown but it’s still going. Oh, and all Liberties leak and stain the headliner regardless if you have the big retractable sky roof a traditional sunroof or nothing like our Sport. If you have a Liberty you have a leak somewhere.

Did so well, I met up with a 8 inch lifted WJ with 35 inch tires, and his buddy in a Mojave gladiator, and my Liberty was handling the trail better than they were in many cases. They were impressed. As was I lol. It surpassed my expectations. I’ve got a video of some of it on my channel.

You guys should do a cheap jeep. With a GC or Commander 06-10 limited. They have the hemi and quadra drive 2. And in them years the quadra drive 2 had a center, rear and front electronic limited-slip that acted like lockers. I got a 07 Commander I bought for $8300 with around 140k on it.

For the record Roman, this Jeep Liberty is body on frame construction. Same as the Dodge Nitro.
@directorjustin

It's "un" as Jeep calls it. It does have a frame, but instead of being isolated from the body by means of rubber mounts, it's welded to it. This gives you the durability of a frame with the rigidity of unibody.

I drove one of these for a security vehicle and it sucked in the snow compared to my 2005 Ford Explorer I had at the time. I’d take my Explorer through deeper snow that that Liberty. I never got stuck in the Liberty but it sure did have a harder time in the deep snow.

You should do an off-road comparison of a base Wrangler vs base Bronco. Just the standard all-season tires and no locking or limited slip diffs. Curious as to how the different 4-wheel drive systems compare for people who want to off-road but not spend 50K+ on a vehicle.

Great Video, Thank you for sharing. You hit it on the nail. To anyone who gets a Jeep for the first time. Please, understand that the PLASTIC interior is meant to be like that because you are expected to be in the woods, mud and Rocks; hence you will be dragging all that mud, dirt, etc into the Jeep. Yes, Jeep saves $$$, but that plastic is also part of the utilitarian design. If you go into a Jeep expecting alcantera interior, then you are shopping in the wrong Make.

It's amazing what a vehicle can do with decent set of tires and a competent driver. You don't need 38s , dual lockers, and the latest off-road technology that the media tells you you have to have. Last year, I bought a brand new Jeep gladiator. Total stripped down base model, manual transmission, crank windows, manual locks. The cost was just under $36,000. Threw a decent set of all-terrain tires on, and have been extremely impressed with the places that thing has gone and the abuse it has taken. It just goes to show, don't fall for people who say you need every mod in the book in order to hang.

Yes- a KK series Liberty with auto tranny and a Rough Country lift kit (with new front coil-overs) is a great cheap off-road vehicle. Better still if it's got the skid plates and cooling system upgrade. We are on our 2nd KK (reportedly an ex government vehicle). We like our 3.7L engine - it don't break! We recently had to replace the TIPM at $1250 for parts only - but it still sooo much less $ tan a 4Runner or Wrangler.

Some comments. I have a first generation Liberty with the CRD diesel. It's still going strong. The Liberty's biggest shortcoming is its meager ground clearance. A Frankenlift II suspension lift cured that. Mine has full skidplates, the SelecTrac transfer case and a limited slip rear differential. The CRD has a "5-speed" automatic transmission, that is actually a 6-speed because it has "alternate" 2nd gear. The 3.7 gas V6 is a fuel-guzzling dog, but the Liberty is also not a light vehicle. My Libby CRD weighs 4,300 lbs., about 800 lbs. more than an XJ Cherokee. The LIbby's biggest downsides are electrical problems (very common on most Chrysler products) and the low-slung, too-soft factory suspension. And, yes, I've done some very serious off-roading with my "slightly modified" Libby.

It has around 235 torque if I remember correctly, and if it has the 4 low too you’re golden. I have the sister vehicle, the Dodge Nitro LOL but it’s been capable, I’ve never gotten stuck and some off road tread based tires help. Tows 5000, leading in towing in its class back then. 290k later.

I had a 2003 Liberty limited, candy apple red, it was great off road but my goodness did it get absolutely horrible gas mileage, and I'm not kidding it was like 11.8 MPG average with a lot of city driving it was around 10 MPG... My 2007 Lincoln town car gets several gallons better gas mileage in city and gets around 25 MPG on the Highway even though its heavier and has a bigger more powerful/reliable engine and it has a full frame... Town Car had half the mileage and cost half as much... I still have the Town Car, and i absolutely love it!
