A better test of the trucks would be to see how they compare with the same tires. Tires can make all the difference. Eliminate that difference, and you will have a true comparison between the trucks themselves.

Pay now or pay later. I own a 2010 Taco, bought it new. I've done the timing chain once, the serp belt twice and regular oil and lube. Nothing else, not even brakes after 270,000 km. It's a six speed standard TRD off road. I take it deep into the BC wilderness hunting and fishing etc...never let me down, not once. I've also owned two Fords from new (F250 and F350 Diesel) won't bore you but it was a very different experience....

I like both of these trucks. It seems as if the Ford is more spacious on the inside, is a bit quicker, and has a better ride. The Tacoma seems better off road, depreciates less, and is probably a bit more reliable. I don't think you can really go wrong with either one of these.

@@Jefferysawyeroutdoorsports yeah the old rangers are pretty reliable. The new ones I’m not so sure about. Just because it’s a turbo inline 4 inside of a truck. Now if they had something like the old 4.0 v6 or 4.9 inline 6 in it then it’d probably be the best midsize truck on the market.

@@Jefferysawyeroutdoorsports Did your old Ranger have a turbo engine and a 10 speed tranny? Did it have crawl control and a bunch of electronics? Did it have tons of cheap plastic parts in the engine bay? You can't determine the longevity of the current model based on your experience with an older one. What I see too often with newer vehicles is the overuse of plastic in the engine. Like plastic intakes, plastic components on the cooling system, and plastic components right next to the exhaust manifold. So when you go to work on them they crack or break. The thing that makes the Tacoma more reliable is that it's basically the same design from many years back. They still use a 6 speed auto. If you look at the forums for vehicle problems, the new 8, 9, 10 speed autos have a lot of problems. Turbo direct injection engines have problems. The Tacoma uses naturally aspirated 6 speed auto and manual still. That's what makes it more reliable than the competition.

Some of us don’t live in the city and live in rural areas and drive our trucks off road just about every weekend. Ford is not going to beat Toyota in reliability in the long run. I have owned many Toyota 4x4 pickups and 4Runners, they never disappoint for rugged off road ability and reliability. I honestly have never owned a Ford because of the bad reputation they have and the problems friends and family have had with Ford products. There is a reason resale value is so high on Toyota trucks compared to Ford....

My buddy just got a 21 Taco and we went into the bush...he came back very disappointed with his purchase. I had a tacoma for 10 years and now have a 2018 f150 5.0l, and one thing I can say is yes the taco is a bit rough around the edges but it only adds to it's rugged capability. After 10 years it never left me stranded and still looked handsome. My only wish is you could get the small 4.7l out of the tundra as an engine option in the taco. Finally a sensible comment. The cult like followers of the taco are hell bent to diss the Ranger spreading all sorts of FUD. The leading brand the Tacoma is not perfect. The 3.5/6 speed could definitely benefit from a refresh. Allot of issues with the seat height as well with many owners. But with sales high, Toyota ignores these issues. IMO, Toyota will refresh the Taco like they did with the Hilux when the Ranger hit the scene. As you say, competition is good. And the Colorado will probably also get another refresh earlier then they probably would have.

The Ranger has advantages in fuel economy due to the use of a 10-speed automatic and a four cylinder engine but relies on inherently unreliable turbocharging to achieve its power. The naturally aspirated six cylinder Toyota has proven long-term reliability. The Ford has the edge in both technology and efficiency but the Toyota has proven long-term reliability and the highest resale value in the industry. By financial advisor standards, when purchasing a vehicle, it should be a minimum of 20% down, max 4 year loan, and not let your total monthly vehicle expense, including principal, interest and insurance, exceed 10% of your gross income. You follow that rule, you will quickly understand the majority of people cannot afford a new car/SUV/truck. So this is what 40k? Let's do the math. 8k down (20%) on a 4 year note with excellent credit including taxes (for Colorado that's where I live) will set you back about 822/month plus full coverage insurance which will be about 800+/year with a clean record. Now this vehicle should only take up 10% of your gross salary. That said, I would say if you make about around 130k/ year, this should be affordable. This will allow you to save properly as well as create a good 3-6 month financial cushion. I can assure you that the majority of people that are purchasing this vehicle do not make a salary of 130k/yr and you should never include dual income because if someone gets hurt, laid off, divorced etc, you will not be able to afford the vehicle on a single salary.

Hi guys, love your work. One thing I have picked up a couple of times in your reviews of the Ranger is your reference to the 'European' Ranger. I am not sure if you know or not, but this truck was designed and developed here in Australia. This platform was originally released in 2011 and totally transformed the small truck market (what we call 'Utilities' or 'Utes') here as the first one to have the safety and driving characteristics close to a car. Since that time the other manufacturers lifted their game to match. I have been the proud owner of a Ranger here for 2 years and love it. In Australia we only get Diesel engines, mine being the 3.2L 5 cylinder diesel (there is also a 2.2L 4 cylinder, and the new Ranger Raptor introduced the advanced 2.0L twin-turbo 4 cylinder that is available across the range too). Have a great new year guys! All the best from Queensland, Australia!

@@paulrodrigues9603, they are pretty cool aren't they. Everybody was hoping for the 2.7L Ecoboost, and Ford has copped a bit of flak over the 2.0L, do you think Richard Rawlins would do a 2.7L or Coyote conversion as a challenge? AUD$83K drive away, which on straight exchange rate is about US$59K. How does that compare with your prices for say a ZR2. I don't know what your taxes and on-roads are over there. The quoted MRP for a ZR2 seems about USD$43k, but what would you actually pay to put one on the road (and what discounts are being offered)? You will not get any discount deal on a Raptor, as they already have several thousand pre-orders...which is a lot here, and for a low volume model.

Like so many others, I’m stunned by the prices they’re asking for these mid-sized trucks. Way back in 1993 I bought a brand new, well-appointed Mazda B2200 extra cab 2WD for $12,500.00 (Canadian). After eight years, I sold it and bought a new 2002 Ranger Edge, 4L auto extra cab 2WD, and the $25,000.00 price seemed exorbitant at the time, and now we’re supposed to shell out ~$40,000.00 or more for one of these?! How do they justify that? I’m one of those people who really takes care & maintains their vehicles. My ’02 Ranger (I can’t believe that’s 17 years already) has only 133,000 km (83,000 miles) on it, and looks nearly new. While I don’t like the amount of fuel it consumes, and do like many of the features of the new Rangers, the price (+ 12% tax!) of these new trucks is simply prohibitive, so I guess I’ll just keep the old sled going for several more years.

Got it new (6 miles on the odometer) for just $22,000. Still gets 23 mpg average. Has never needed any repairs at 213,000 miles & has been used hard as my work truck. Sounds like the day I bought it, burns no oil, I do suppose the clutch can't last too much longer but I'll replace it myself.Wonder which would sell for more today? Wait till the clutch starts squeaking and your transmission starts rattling. I leased a 2019 trd off road 6speed and at first but was in love I was getting 24mpg on my commute to work but at about 5k miles the clutch started squeaking the dealership had it for a day and came back with it's normal I didn't have the time to deal with dealership so I just dealt with the noise but at 9,500k I was driving on a rough road when coming down the hill I put the clutch in and it sounded like the transmission was going to fall off I duplicated the noise and made a video to show to the dealership they had it for 4 days and told me that all the other trucks they tested had the rattle but that mine was a lot noisier. I was do disappointed I really loved the truck but now that's all I can hear I went on the forums and come to find out there's a bunch on manual owners having this issue . I'm glad I was working with a good dealership the sales manager offer me to get out of the lease 2 years early with out any penalty so I did they told me a Toyota tech from corporate was going to inspect the truck. I loved the Tacoma I tried one out in 2016 with the automatic and didn't like the way it drove, I wanted to test the 2020 see if anything changed and I don't know if it was just me wanting to have one but it felt really good shifting was smooth and by no means was it a rocket but it really felt good so I ended up keeping the 2020 auto and this time a bought it knowing I will keep it till it stops running and I hope that's a Long . Just wanted to share my experience., If you going with the manual test it real well if you look the manual transmission is not made in USA only the auto and the engine just a little fact not sure if it has anything to do with it.
@roaddogg800
@roaddogg800 4 жыл бұрын
@@kikorubio5996 Yes, the manual transmission is weird to say the least. It isn't particularly smooth, clunks every time I take it out of a gear. It rattles a bit etc. Worse yet my average MPG is 14 which is abysmal for a modern V6. All that said, it's fun to drive and is a 2 year lease. If it breaks they fix it and either way I'll be done with it in about 21 months.

I'd go Ranger. Judging by "before" they stopped selling them, parts are plenty and not as expensive as imports. They held up overseas in the desert, where we didn't have Tacoma's to compare to. It's a more modern truck. It's a hard call still because the Tacoma has a great reputation and I believe is an awesome truck. Probably one of those situations where you just have to drive both and see what fits you better.

The previous owner unfortunately had to let it go because of the pandemic and employment issues. They added all kinds of aftermarket stuff, like a raptor grill, bull pipe bar not a full grill, tube steps instead of the factor step rail and some really cool storage options for the bed AND a retractable step to get into the bed. As well as dampers for the tailgate. It's a bad ass truck in Lightning Blue & I'm super excited

I have owned Tacoma's since 1989. Now I'm deciding between these two. I'll do some off road (mostly desert). I'll be doing much more towing and boat ramps in the future. I'm leaning toward the Ranger XLT super cab/4x4 w the towing package. On the Toyota side, I liked the Tacoma SR/access cab/V6 4x4. Neither one has a rear locker which would be nice, but I'm not spending extra thousands on these "packages" to get it.
@BeanoNoir
@BeanoNoir 5 жыл бұрын
I would say that the increase in flex is mostly due to longer shackles and/or longer leaf packs with fewer leaves. The downside to that setup is a lower payload, and a slightly meandering axle at speed (think floaty). It wouldn't be hard to do on the Ford as well, again, at the cost of capacity. I'd also check into the crawl ratios again because if the setup is the same as in the F-150, 1st gear is disabled in 4x4 low. With the Dana 44 rear end on the Ford there is significantly more aftermarket available (depending on how standard it is). It looks like the FX4 package is actually worth buying in the Ranger, unlike in the F-150. Since you can add skid plates on their own for $160 and a rear locker comes with any tow package, you are paying the remaining 600 on hill descent control and generic shocks. Save the 600 for monotube shock units aftermarket. On the Ranger it looks like you get a front bash plate with the underbody skid plates, the trail control, which is at least more useful than hill descent, and actual FX4 stickers on your generic shocks. The reality is that bash plate makes up for quite a lot, as the F-150 goes from the bumper to a massive chasm then the front of the sub-frame which amounts to a 90 degree plow. The reality in this comparison is that these are two very different trucks. One built for payload and towing with decent passenger comfort, the other focused on lifestyle and off road prowess, yet with the weird butt on the floor seating position. It'll be intriguing to see how they each sell this year.
