As a former GM tech, I wish the lighter duty trucks were built like this one, maybe then I wouldn't have hated myself the entire time I was working on a Duramax. To really do anything on one in a 2500 or 3500, the cab came off the truck lol. Also I really like that big solid front axle. Stuff you don't really see anymore.

They should put no DEF system since they're unreliable and always cause problems. Add in the DPF and ridiculous amount of filters and it's a recipe for disaster. Companies who run vehicles like this can't afford down time yet that's what these modern diesels spend more time doing.

Quite a few years ago my dad had a 3500 Chevy Durumax to haul his 45 foot fifth wheel horse trailer and he sold it and got one of these 5500 Chevy Durumax trucks and even with a little less power it hauled much better due to a few thing like the gearing in the rear end and transmission as well as the frame plus the wheelbase and height and in my opinion the stiffer suspension helped too.

One last thing, when my dad had his truck shop we can both weld and paint and would get those trucks in with bare frames and then fabricate and paint a bed for it to the customers specifications and sometimes we would just build them the way we wanted to and then put them up for sale and it was always fun to fabricate and paint the beds, we would get to take nothing and build it into something which was always fun and satisfying, we definitely built some really cool ones!

GM took a 6500 and derated it to make a 5500 and 4500. Ford took there F350 made the rear of the chassis stronger and increased the GVWR. Next time you see a F550 take a look you can see where they welded a 550 chassis to a 350 chassis, its right behind the cab. also the engine they use barely fits under the hood, to do any major work on it, it takes 8 hours to remove the cab and 8 hours to put it back on, thats why GM did the tilt hood. As far as who built what on the truck, the chassis frame, axles, drive shaft and suspension have all been provided by international. The cab, cab interior, Duramax, and Alison (FYI this is not the Allison 1000, most will have the 1750 or the 2750) have all been provided by GM. The only thing that was a partnership was the hood and bumper. On a final note regardless of the truck that comes off the line Chevy badge or International they both come with the Duramax and Alison. international just does not have the the rights to so the Duramax branding so it wont appear on the truck. if you have questions feel free to hit me up, I have been to the plant where this truck is built.

@@williamrheawe958 if you are saying that the 450 and the 550 are not in the same class as the 45/55/6500? than saying the 650 and 750 are better is the same thing!!!!!!! the 750 is way out of the 6500 class but the 650 is almost topped by the 6500. we should start with some corrections B10 on the Duramax is 375k I can understand that they don't have a B50 for the 6500 because its a newer engine and no one has run it that long f650 us rated at 26 GVWR not 29K f650 is a de-rated 750 facts 650 has all the features that you would want in a MD over all the 650 can do about 1,000 lbs more than the 6500 once you figure in chassis and body weight. 650 has a very out dated cab, small screen, bench seat from the 60's and an old f150 dash. 6500 has the same cab as the 2019 2500, touch screen 7" with apple car play and fully adjustable seats for driver and others. 650 does have the fip hood but it weighs over 100 lbs with very small grips. I am 220 lbs., not a small guy and it took me two trys to open the hood where s the Chevy I did it with one hand. as far as service the Chevy still is easier to get to all the engine components because of the turning on another note you said your self: Ford F-650/f-750 hp/tq 270-330/675-725 Chevy 6500 hp/tq 350/700 more consistent power with the Chevy, also all the torque is steady at 700 between 1,600 and 2,600 rpm, I'm sure the ford can't do that

I heard from a GM video that they put the def fluid on the passenger side because they were concerned that employees not used to driving a diesel truck will put diesel in the def fluid system. Most gas stations I've seen have long hoses on their pumps so you can simply pull it over the hood and fill up the def. The GCWRs are similar(35k) but the pickups are 8500lbs max and these trucks are +10k lbs before up fitting, 15k lbs for some. Most people don't understand that a trucks towing capacity is based a lot of factors. When you add 100lbs to your pickup bed you lose 1500 lbs of towing capacity. Tongue weight is payload, so add payload and lose you lose on towing capacity. My 19 F350 lariat has 3050lbs of payload that translates to a 20350lb towing(15% tongue/hitch weight). Add me, wife and four kids and the their crap(950lbs), now its a 2100lb payload. Now I have a max tow rating of 14000lbs. It's illegal and unsafe to exceed either of the GAWRs(5990lb front, 7280LB rear) or the GVWR(11500). If you are involved in a collision and are found to be over any of the legal weights you also lose your insurance coverage. Love seeing the guys that have f250/2500s with airbags hauling triple axle toy haulers. Way, way outside the legal capacity on those trucks.

jowest17 It's not a theory, and he just explained it. Tongue weight is payload, and tongue weight determines what the trailer can weigh since legal tongue weight is 15% of total trailer weight. Increasing the weight of the vehicle and its contents decreases the amount left over for additional payload (tongue weight). Less tongue weight equals a lot less trailer weight. Read more, learn more, suck less.

Afaik GM and Ram don't make 650/750 competitor models, generally leaving that up to the likes of Navistar, Isuzu, and Hino trucks

I'm more of a RAM/Cummins guy but Chevy did something I've been wanting for years. They have finally put a hood that opens to the front and exposes the sides of the engine like tractor trailers. In the past, RAMS were always easier to work on under the hood being an inline cylinder design, making things less cramped. Fords and Chevys usually have to have the body removed to get to anything. I would actually consider this for that feature alone. Now, if they could get rid of the horrible 1000 series Allison and throw in an AISIN transmission.

@@charlesrodriguez7984 ; It’s notorious for over heating when under heavy loads. That’s why Chevy/GMC had their tow ratings significantly lower than Ford or RAM. What happens is people buy these 1000 series Allison transmissions and they think they can tow heavy and often because they see the other 2 brands doing it. Yes they will tow the weight, but it decreases the life of the transmission by a significant factor. That goes with any transmission that over heats. RAM’s Chrysler transmission is horrible too. People make the same mistake with the. They just aren’t built for it. But at least with RAM you could opt for the ASIN which is a beast. All that said, I believe Chevy/GMC started putting in the 2000 series now. That’s when we all saw their tow rating jump up to the level of the other big two brands. If I was buying a truck from the 1000 series years, my preference in order would be 1) ASIN , 2)TorqueShift, 3)Allison or Chrysler “not sure which one is worse. Current new models would be 1)ASIN/Allison 2000 “Not sure which is better”, 2)TorqueShift, 3)Chrysler.

Only truck I could find at the time for the price I budgeted. Was not my preferred choice. 30 days after I bought it I lost all my fuel injectors, TCM, and Oil Cooler. Everything the fuel went through was destroyed. I know the Oil Cooler was due to fords differential metals in the Coolant system. My coolant is filtered now. At least with the 6.0 you have fixes. The 6.4s have issues with no way to fix them. To be honest, I’m not a fan of any of the new diesels with all the emissions junk they were forced to add. They’ve really turned them into expensive throwaway trucks because of the emissions stuff that goes out just out of Warrantee. EXPENSIVE!!! I’m eyeing Fords 7.3 gasser next. I never pull over 16k and it will do 17k-20k depending on your gears. Diesels run amazing until they don’t and there’s so much stuff that has to work in unison. I want simple and cheap. 80% of the time I’m not towing. Just have a welder and tools on my truck so I don’t mind the fuel loss. Anything’s better than my 6.0. Was getting 18.6 mpg and when all that stuff went out, I had a delete kit put in. Now I get 11 mpg. LOL. I lost on that one.

My favorite comment in the whole video is about having to go from a 5500 to a 3500 if you really want to move a lot of weight. Ummm, sure. That's why they build the 5500 that way--so you can go get your regular pickup if anything heavy needs to be towed. There is a difference between commercial engineering and consumer marketing. Consumer marketing makes you think that your 3500 can routinely and safely do whatever the company says it can for purposes of the latest fad, and better than a commercial truck engineered for the purpose. From my understanding it would be best for a dump truck and sense it has bigger breaks and just a bigger heavier truck it can handle the load a lot better it has less horsepower and torque so that u won’t overload the engine

@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney lol, I feel that. I didnt notice it until after I moved down to the coast and back. Some that grew up coastal or at least low level can experience effects similar to high altitude sickness just by ascending 1000ft too quickly. Others dont acclimate from going up and down all the time. I live at 10,000 feet now, but even when I drop down into Denver I'll catch myself wheezing and short on breath in Denver. These guys drive upto 10k and above trail riding and I imagine its likely the same. After talking to people around here. It is more common than most would think. Most people can acclimate quickly and never notice a difference while others can struggle for life

Def Fliud on the passenger side prevents accidental pumping it into the diesel tank which is severe if done. With multiple drivers, employees etc. it pays off to have it separated. Question, I know the truck can’t be very smooth. Did that give you the voice struggle? Is it that rough? Thank you for the review

The def nozzle is smaller and many have put def in their diesel tank and destroy the entire fuel system at minimum. Just nobody want to admit it. And when you buy a used duramax, you have some assurance that this hasn’t happened to that used vehicle

I see chevy is continuing their new motorized dumpster lineup in the medium duty range. DEF fill on the opposite side of the fuel fill, and located next to the hood latch, body fitment issues, and looks silly... Colabing with Navistar isnt a good thing either...

I test drove one of these at my local International dealership when I was looking to buy another fleet vehicle. They look beefy but ride like it has square tires also Its governed at 75 mph and they said there is no way around that. I even looked into aftermarket companies who could possibly over ride that and no one would touch it. Just my two cents
