I've been binge watching your channel since I discovered it only days ago. I'm finding myself inspired to fabricate things. Then I task myself with hanging several shelves over my computer desk, in the process stripping the head of a #10 robinson screw, and breaking off my drill bit for pilot holes in the wall, which was a sobering realisation of my technical skills. In all seriousness, I am truly inspired, signing up at my local tool shop for a welding class. Can't wait to make some stuff!

The brackets mounting to the B post may not be designed to hold force in the direction that will actually be applied in the event of a crash, depending on where the belt is anchored. In the event of an accident the direction of load is going pulling the bar forward. If the bar is pulled forward the floor braces will cause the bar to lift and the only thing resisting that lift will be the continued bending of the brackets on each end which are not oriented to resist that directional lifting force. After small amount of lift the bar will be able to rotate forward. I don't think that the bar would feel completely but guess would be there will allow for 8 to 10 inches of forward extension. Although this could be mitigated by moving the anchor Point of the seatbelt rear of the vertical line of the bar let's say anchoring the belts between the rear passenger seat and seat back. I hope that makes sense it's kind of a complex mechanism to try and explain without drawing a diagram. If it helps think of the motion of a scissor jack being drawn in by the screw. I'm not saying it's inherently a bad design just saying for all the people her watching this video if you try and Anchor your seat belts to the floor directly behind the driver seat this design becomes very dangerous, if you anchor the seat belt on the bench of the backseat it's totally fine.

.125" flat bar extended out horizontally for 1.5", curved with zero gussetting......on both sides. To add to that, the bar is curved down 8.5". The leverage on those brackets is massive. All the force applied in a forward collision will be leveraged on that bar, not pulled directly into the mounting points. None of that matters though. The weakest link in your bar is the mounting point for the lower braces. They don't allow the belt bar to shove into them directly. Your brackets should be in line, not cantilevered. The bar will rotate around a centerline on your B pillar mounts when a force is applied to the belts. All of the force will be applied to those 2 little lower brace brackets. That is your effective mounting location because you have a bent harness bar. The belts I have installed come with metal brackets that the belts loop through. They are .250" material and the load in an accident is pulled DIRECTLY from the mounting points. The mounting points are secure as they are minimum 1.625 material, per NHRA specs. This is KEY and clearly explained in belt mounting directions. Do a 5G collision with belts....10, or 30. 30Gs totals a car but the driver can walk away with a proper racing harness that is mounted properly. When the mounting location can move, it is not proper. Your's will move. I'm not trying to rag on you. Your fabrication skills are not in question. The harness bar.....is not engineered to accept a high G load. Because you have a swinging harness bar (belt mounting point is not on mounting centerline), the brace bars are critical. They are the only thing that will stop harness bar rotation. If the harness bar moves in a high G situation, so does the belts....

i was thinking the same thing no gussets no kicker legs to rear no corner to center legs to prevent flex but im used to full roll cages or at least 4 -6 point cages so i wasn't sure if i was just over thinking it as to me it dosent look like it would pass any track inspection ive ever seen thou his welds look pretty good

your good enough to have people bring you rare, high quality and/or their expensive vehicles to work on...at your house...(can't state enough what that says bout quality, trust and self made renown). Is this a "side hustle" with a 9-5 job or is this the living? I've considered doing this myself on the side but with the cost of quality tools and the limited time I have I'm not sure I'd be able to go beyond hobby fabricating. I do appreciate that tube notching video you made, I have to take it a step down and use a cut off wheel but it works the same.

I've been doing this professionally for about 15 years. Sometimes I would have to get a regular job turning wrenches as a heavy equipment mechanic to pay my bills. I slowly built up a reputation over the years as well as my clientele. I started this series in my garage after I retired because I was bored and many of my high end clients refused to let me stop working on their cars. Now I'm back in a shop again doing what I do best which is fab. This industry is very tough to get into and stay in because it is almost entirely up to you to fight for a build when there is so much that can be bought and bolted on. I was lucky enough to develop my skills and portfolio when it was in demand. It's still possible to become a professional fabricator, but the struggle has increased over the years to maintain that profession.

@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 8 жыл бұрын
As long as the engineering and installation is correct and trusted, I see no problem using a harness bar for daily use. I know there are many horror stories and threads saying they are dangerous, but most stem from second rate components and well traveled stories.
@theCHUBBYmexican22
@theCHUBBYmexican22 8 жыл бұрын

As long as I wrap the shoot before it is scheduled to go back to the owner, I can build another one before the next shoot is scheduled. If you send me an email on TheFabricatorSeries.com, I'll keep in touch with you on the scheduling and go over some options.

where do u buy those tabs for the support legs and what brand and size do u use for the eye bolt hole for the supports? nice build!!! btw how much did this build cost u roughly ?
@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 8 жыл бұрын
+07Stylist The "weld tabs" are made by a company called ProtoFab. I have a local vendor near me that sells them. Option B is I often send out the tab design to my laser cutter and they make them for me if I can't find one off the shelf. A quick online search for weld tabs will net a lot of results and most small companies will custom cut a tab in any dimension for you if you ask. The eye bolts (Heim Joints/Rod Ends) are supplied by FK Rod Ends. There are hundreds of retail vendors both online and in many industrial hardware stores. These were 3/8" rod ends. I do not discuss cost because it largely varies based on where you live, materials used, tooling, outsourcing (if you don't have tools), and a few other things. The best thing to do is search out the materials I used here to find your base pricing.

thanks allot man i appreciate the help and advice!!! i do allot of custom work too at my house and i would love to build my own harness bar or modify a universal one
@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 8 жыл бұрын
+07Stylist I originally thought it was strange going from a full shop back to my garage, but I've adjusted again and a lot of viewers have written in saying the garage is kind of "inspirational" to them since I'm shooting these vids in mine while doing full projects. I'm glad to help people where I can. I strongly advise you to NOT modify a universal design. A harness bar is a very serious component and not knowing full well the standards and quality of materials from the process could be the very thing that changes a properly designed system into a decoration that you can not depend on. If you can't trust a universal system to save you without modification - you shouldn't expect it to be any better with modification. Let me know if I can help any more.

What types of welding machines are there and what do you recommend for a beginner? Great video and also this is the nicest harness bar I've seen usually I see just a thin bar that goes from pillar to pillar but you put your time into this.

+Jadon Ghereben There are many types of machines out there. Its a long list. If you are planning to learn how to weld by buying a machine and laying down some beads, grab a name brand machine such as Miller or Lincoln. Do not buy a knock-off or crappy machine. They usually end up making you develop bad habits while dealing with their inefficiencies. The best way to save a few dollars and learn is by buying a good name brand machine second hand from a local source. If you find you don't like it, or don't want to be a welder, you can usually get some or all of your money back when you sell it again. MIG welding is the most common type of welding. I ultimately suggest you enroll in a local community college class for some formal welding training. They supply the knowledge, metal, and machines for you to decide if you want to invest in a welder and become serious about it.

is there any problem if i put the bend parallel to the surface ? in this case is perpendicular .. but there is any loss if i put parallel ?
@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 8 жыл бұрын
+Giu That all depends on the direction of the load. If the load pulls straight forward, parallel to the floor might be best. The leg supports also determine tha angle of the bar and how to set up the bend.

How would you go about designing a harness bar where fairly easy access to the back seat of a 2 door is still needed? E.g., still have kids that need to get in and out of the back seat.
@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 6 жыл бұрын
Dustin Meier Forget about the design of it and focus on the effect of it. Kids in the back with a frontal impact may cause the kids to smack the bar. In other words, don't do it. Period.

Hey dude can I ask you for some professional advice? I'll be quick. I bought a cold air intake but in ended up being for a different model years than my car. Basically it only has 1 nozzle for the line to go on, but the proper one for my year needs to have 2 nozzles. I was thinking of finding a shop to cut a hole in it and weld on the nozzle so I can use this damn thing. Does that sound like a plan that could work and do you think I could get a shop to do this little job for cheap like 30-50 bucks? Provided I find the correct sized nozzle and bring it all to them? btw your videos are amazingly informative for someone who wants to actually learn this. Definitely not for the casual audience.
@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 8 жыл бұрын
Any decent welding shop should absolutely be able to do that job for you. There are also aftermarket ports you can add without welding. all you have to do is cut a hole with the provided hole saw, install the grommet and port adapter, and drive on down the road. I'll look up the part number for the Spectre kit real quick.

The correct angle your suppose to have for safety is from the height of the occupants shoulders to +/- 5 degrees thats part of the FIA reg we have to go by. but yeah every rule book seem to be different with some say no more than 45?
@TheFabricatorSeries
@TheFabricatorSeries 8 жыл бұрын
+S13R32 It all depends on the sanction at the end of the day. When it comes to height, the driver's shoulders are supposed to be the reference point, but it also depends on how tall the driver is vs. the holes in the seat. If the driver is much taller or shorter, the angle can not be met from the shoulders. I did measure the driver before this install and he was pretty much dead level with the seat holes. The biggest angle I have seen stated in a rule book was 30 degrees.

So I'm a 15 y/o who likes cars. I don't know much about welding n metal so I wanna ask, are most metal strong enough to be used in a harness bar? Also, what's the diameter of the pipe on this FRS? Plan to make one in the future for a 350z
@LemonMan_Man
@LemonMan_Man 5 жыл бұрын
Tube and pipe are not the same. 1 inch .120 wall tube or thicker. If you buy the material and can tell the welder how to bend/ cut/ and weld it up it will cost way less. I would suggest just buying a premade. Or going full roll cage

My education is both formal (school) and learning from others (pro's in the industry willing to give a lesson). All of that combined with a ton of dedication for over 15 years has taught me what I know. You have to dedicate yourself to the profession and accept that there is always something else to learn. No matter how well you and your skills progress every year, you have to be able to take what you know, and always refine it. There are some tech and vocational schools to get you going in the right direction, but fabrication is a dedication from you to continuously better your skills and keep going.
