জিম করবেট উপমহাদেশের শ্রেষ্ঠ শিকারীদের একজন। আজ তার বিখ্যাত এক শিকার কাহিনী শুনবেন।
জিম করবেট (জুলাই ২৫, ১৮৭৫ - এপ্রিল ১৯, ১৯৫৫) একজন ইংলিশ শিকারী। তবে জন্ম ভারতের কুমায়ুন অঞ্চলের নৈনিতাল শহরে। স্থানটি বর্তমানে উত্তরাখণ্ড রাজ্যে। তিনি নামকরা শিকারী ছাড়াও একজন বিখ্যাত পরিবেশবাদীও ছিলেন। তার নামানুসারে ভারতের জিম করবেট ন্যাশনাল পার্কের নামকরণ করা হয়।
আজও জিম করবেটের কিংবদন্তিগুলো শুধুমাত্র কুমায়ুন এবং গাড়োয়ালের মানুষদের হৃদয়েই নয় বরঞ্চ সারা বিশ্বের মানুষদের মনেই অম্লান হয়ে রয়েছে। ১৯০৭ থেকে ১৯৩৮ সালের মধ্যে করবেট মোট ৩৩টির মতো মানুষখেকো বাঘকে অনুসরণ এবং গুলিবিদ্ধ করেছিলেন। যদিও এদের মধ্যে মাত্র ডজনখানেককে ভালোভাবে নথিভুক্ত করা হয়েছিলো। এটা বলা হয়ে থাকে যে, এসব বড় বেড়ালেরা ১২০০ এর উপর পুরুষ, মহিলা এবং শিশুদেরকে হত্যা করেছিলো। তার প্রথম শিকার করা বাঘটি ছিলো চম্পাবতের। যেটি কিনা চম্বাবতের মানুষখেকো হিসেবেই বেশি পরিচিত ছিলো। বলা হয়ে থাকে যে, প্রায় ৪৩৬টি নথিভুক্ত মৃত্যুর জন্যে এ মানুষখেকো বাঘটি দায়ী ছিলো। যদিও করবেটের শিকার করা প্রাণীদের বেশীরভাগই ছিলো বাঘ তবে তিনি সফলতার সাথে অন্ততপক্ষে দুটো মানুষখেকো লেপার্ডকেও হত্যা করতে সক্ষম হয়েছিলেন। এর মধ্যে ১৯১০ সালে তিনি পানারে প্রথম লেপার্ডটিকে হত্যা করেছিলেন যেটি কিনা প্রায় ৪০০ মানুষকে হত্যা করেছিলো। আর দ্বিতীয়টি ছিলো কুমায়ুনের মানুষখেকো লেপার্ড। প্রায় আট বছর ধরে যেটি কিনা দৌরাত্ম্য করেছিলো এবং হত্যা করেছিলো ১২৬ এর অধিক মানুষকে। তার শিকার করা অন্যান্য আরও মানুষখেকোগুলোর মধ্যে তাল্লা-দেসের মানুষখেকো, মোহনের মানুষখেকো, থাক এর মানুষখেকো, মুক্তেশরের মানুষখেকো, চম্বাবতের বাঘিনী এগুলোর নাম বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখযোগ্য। ভয়ঙ্কর কোন শিকার ধরার সময় তিনি একাকী থাকতে পছন্দ করতেন এবং পায়ে হেঁটে পথ অতিক্রম করতেন। অনেক সময় তিনি রবিন নামের ছোট একটি কুকুরকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে শিকার করতেন।এ সময়ে তিনি অন্যদের জীবন রক্ষার্থে তার নিজের জীবনের উপর অনেক বড় ধরনের রিস্ক নিতেও পিছপা হতেন না। তিনি তার কর্মস্থলে গভীরভাবে সম্মানিত হতেন।
Edward James Corbett (25 July 1875 - 19 April 1955) was a British hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author who hunted a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India. He held the rank of colonel in the British Indian Army and was frequently called upon by the Government of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, now the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, to kill man-eating tigers and leopards that were preying on people in the nearby villages of the Kumaon-Garhwal Regions.
He authored Man-Eaters of Kumaon, Jungle Lore, and other books recounting his hunts and experiences, which enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success. He became an avid photographer and spoke out for the need to protect India's wildlife from extermination.
During his life Corbett tracked and shot a number of leopards and Tigers; about a dozen were well documented Man-eaters. Corbett provided estimates of human casualties in his books, including Man-Eaters of Kumaon, The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, and The Temple Tiger, and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon. Calculating the totals from these accounts, these big cats had killed more than 1,200 men, women, and children, according to Corbett. There are some discrepancies in the official human death tolls that the British and Indian governments have on record and Corbett's estimates.
The first designated man-eating tiger he killed, the Champawat Tiger, was responsible for an estimated 436 documented deaths. Though most of his kills were tigers, Corbett successfully killed at least two-man-eating leopards. The first was the Panar Leopard in 1910, which allegedly killed 400 people. The second was the man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag in 1926, which terrorized the pilgrims journeying to the holy Hindu shrines Kedarnath and Badrinath for more than eight years, and was said to be responsible for more than 126 deaths.
Other notable man-eaters he killed were the Talla-Des man-eater, the Mohan man-eater, the Thak man-eater, the Muktesar man-eater and the Chowgarh tigress.
