Much respect to Vargas! He didn't have to take those fight early on his career. He would've made a lot more money, but balls is what gets you respect, unfortunately not much money… but at the end of the day, you can go to sleep holding your balls and nobody can question your heart…

That was a very tough era. I always had more respect for Oscar than any other fighter because he fought everyone. Vargas was one hell of a tough and brave guy. Wasn't afraid to step into the ring with anyone.

Oscar in his peak was a great boxer/puncher dude has speed and power. I always look at him as the 90's version of sugar ray leonard when it comes to talent and seeking the best possible fight.

Man, imagine if the Trinidad vs Oscar fight and Mosley vs Oscar rematch were judged and scored properly and Oscar got those 2 wins. He would be very high up the ATG list and without question ahead of Floyd. Oscar fought way better competition and most of them when they were prime. Floyd literally only fought prime Corrales, Castillo, and then washed up Oscar and faded pac and faded Cotto. Floyd did beat Herandez, but Oscar had humiliated Hernandez previously when Genaro was undefeated and prime. But Oscar' list: Prime Ruelas, Molina, Oba Carr, Hernandez, Pernell Whitaker, Quartey, Gonzales, and beat a faded Chavez twice, along with roided up Vargas, Mosley and Trinidad. Fact is, Oscar truly only lost once during his prime, lost by literally 1-2 pointes vs PRIME Mosley, but Oscar beat him in the rematch rather easily and was completely robbed. All the fights/losses after his prime, vs Pac, Floyd, Hopkins didn't really carry that much weight. Imagine Floyd from a couple years ago trying to face that mid 2000s pac or Hopkins, he would have been humiliated. But Oscar actually hung with Hops and I think was leading on one card before the KO and then vs Floyd, Oscar lost by 2 rounds! Pac destroyed Oscar mind u, but Oscar was so shot to shit and physically ill it wasn't even funny.

nick quiroz Back then Floyd was too small man, he was fighting below 130 in the amateurs and went pro at 130 ibs. Floyd called out Oscar and Shane Mosley in early 2000 and they didn't want it back then cause Floyd wasn't a big name. But back to what you said, hypothetically speaking if Oscar fought Floyd back then he would have gave him a helluva fight!

Omar Espinoza to bad Floyd fought in such a weak era. We'll never know if he was all that great. Compared to the Leonard's, the hearns, Duran, Delahoya,Winky, Whitaker. They were kings in bad ass eras. Not so much Floyd. He's been the king of the tomato can era of welterweights. The weakest era in welterweight history

De La Hoya, Trinidad, Mosley, Vargas, Quartey. Wright. De La Hoya was the best of his era even with the losses to Trinidad and Mosley. Although he only should have lost once to Mosley. He beat Trinidad but lost to Sturm. Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Hatton, Williams, Margarito. No question about Mayweather being the best of his era.

If Vargas would have been better managed, he would be considered one of the greatest ever. Vs De La Hoya, I was rooting for DLH because I’m from LA and I remember DLH before he was an Olympian. Vargas should be considered one of the greatest, too bad he took those fights way too early in his career. Great fighter.

The problem with DLH's record is that many of the big names he defeated were past their prime. Whittaker beat him, ran vs Tito. Defeated Vargas (after Tito demolished him). Go back and check the names...When he started, he was pretty much taller than his opposition. People in their prime gave him trouble. And the "you got to give me a lot of credit..." after every fight...Come on!

I'm not a fan of Canelo but give the guy credit. He's fought many world class fighters like Chavez Jr, Mayweather, Golovkin, Lara, Trout and Cotto. Yes he didn't deserve to win some of these fights but he still fought them.

Yea, the young kid Vargas that had no respect for Tito vs. the much bigger, roided up vargas that was 10x smarter in the ring vs Oscar? Yet Oscar still finished him faster. Lets not forget, Vargas also put Tito down and had him hurt and Tito low blows him to save his life. Smart, but Trinidad may have been done had he not resorted to that cowardly act.

I think the fighters today are better or at the very least comparable. It's easy to look back with nostalgia and imagine your cadre of fighters in any given weight class (excepting heavyweight), at any given time, was better. I think the 140 to 154 weight region is better and more varied than in the era of DLH and Vargas, though I appreciate their personas and what they brought to the sport more. The Charlo brothers will never be as beloved as Oscar, moreless Hopkins, Mosley, Roy Jones or any number of fighters in and around that era. Mayweather's out-of-the-ring presence colored too much of what followed; gone, for the most part, are those gentleman fighters. That's why Ward, Alvarez, Cotto and Jacobs stand apart...they are well liked because of how they comport themselves. (No, I don't believe Alvarez took anything to cut weight. Maybe I'm naive that way.)

Not pre-Trinidad vargas.. no way.. vargas was a beast before the tito fight... at the time I didn't think Tito was gonna fight him... vargas beat campas, Ike Quartey (we seen what he did to oscar) winky Wright that was impressive at the time.
