Social class still exists in North Korea. However, not much is known about the private lives of its core class, the ruling elite that dominate the regime's top positions. In this sixth episode of Special Peninsula 24, we are joined by Thae Yong-ho, North Korea's former deputy ambassador to the U.K., to discuss North Korea's hereditary caste-based system. Thae also recalls his personal encounter with Kim Jong-chul, the North Korean leader's older brother, and sheds light on how the new rich and burgeoning black markets are affecting the country.

God, we’re lucky this guy came. Crazy part is, he’s actually a really good person, in my opinion. I hope he’s happy with his life because he has an amazing story to tell, and in the end, Thae did the right thing, and that’s the most important thing. I can’t imagine the difficulty endured by this man and I’ll always give him my credit.

The Indian caste system is within the minds of people.. The government or constitution does not give privilege based on someone with higher caste rather they empower people born into the so called lower caste by giving them reservation so that they can pull out of the social injustices done in the past.. Don't compare that with North Korea which is manufactured to serve a section of people headed by one family

Frnakly Mr.Thae is showing this world what the reality in North Korea is like! It must have been a really hard decision for him to leave his relatives, extended family, his home, his properties(if any) and esp his big job to leave north korea and come to south for his the freedom! I hope north korea soon gets its freedom from kim family and becomes a very well developed place like south

I'm Indian. Just so you know, in India class thing is not followed anymore maybe it was more prevalent 20-25 years ago. Today it exists only in some remote rural parts.

It's now changing. the currency is being revalued now they abandoned the official currency exchange against USD and since Kim Jong-il started experimenting with SEZs people started earning about $30 - $60 a month but ofcourse their housing is free of charge but anything else is mediocre or bleak even by 3rd world standards. Also money in North Korea is worthless. especially in the 1980s people in the 1980s earned 70 - 100 won a month. 90% of their needs from housing, food, uniform are provided by the state. so they usually spend that 70 - 100 won as salary for commute " riding trams and subway " that would be 2 won to take the subway back in the 1980s or for grocery store like buying extra stuff like state manufactured shoes, clothes or buying Soviet products which are status symbols then. so imagine earning 70 won a month and you are working in the office however your food is rationed depending on what the states says how much you should eat your house is free and your healthcare is provided by the state ONLY IF YOU BELONG TO THE CORE CLASS our roughly less than half of their population If you are Wavering class youd be in a very difficult life, youd be probably sent to mines or factories and if you are a hostile class. Your life would be bleak even by 3rd world standards youll be probably lucky to eat 900 calorie meal a day and you are treated like a prisoner.

Think his English is pretty good and not broken at all. English is not his first language, he spent 3-4 years abroad (Denmark, then UK till he defected) called home to N. Korea again for some time. He still spent most of his life in North Korea, and now South Korea. Spending some years without speaking a language can make you less confident when speaking it....
