@@raynechantel2738 Sorry pal, but nobody will follow a passion that will lead to starvation in a cold and worn down house. Back then you could make a living off being an artisan, nowdays in the time you make something some bussinesman has already made hundreds of it and 3 times cheaper.

@@raynechantel2738 ...I think you are wrong. Very few people have the money(or even the time) to support themselves as they develop an art. It would be nice if wealthy people and corporations paid for the education and skill and materials as they learn an artisan trade.

All shell based mother of pearl is toxic. The dust is very similar to asbestos fiber. I have worked extensively with it for years as a semiprecious gemstone in the lapidary/jewelery industry. It should always be kept wet and worked with in a negative pressure exhaust work area to protect the worker. All that said, this man is a National Treasure for his country, absolutely outstanding work and I'm glad he has been able to mentor his nephew in the art! Excellent video, well worth my time to watch!

Yes it has to do with the way the material responds to the grinding process. Splintering into tiny sharp corkscrews which can embed themselves in the lung tissue. Incredibly dangerous. But no reason to be fearful of the beautiful finished products.

The design he's shown working on, was already labor-intensive to begin with. Then the intensity snowballed, and I was totally mindblown at 06:53.. Jeez how many months did that table take? No wonder it sells for $2000+...Excellent work by an extraordinary and humble human being. Kudos to the Still Standing team for bringing such artisans into the limelight! Keep it up!

Koreans mostly use abalone shells and call it Jagae. I think it’s one of the most visually stunning materials nature provides. My grandparents had jagae cabinet they stored the comforters in, and it reminds me of childhood and family. These lacquered furtitures are not only beautiful, they’re sturdy and last long. It’s one of those things you pass on to the next generations.

I live in this country and I known it’s looks cheaper than it should be.
