Koh Lanta - I’m on Thailand's Mainly Muslim Island - That’s my First Impression of Koh Lanta so far
A few days ago, I arrived on Koh Lanta, a Thai Island in Krabi. It feels like a totally different side of Thailand to me. Koh Lanta is mainly Muslim. You can find lots of mosque rather than temples here, many Muslim vendors and lots of halal restaurants. Is Koh Lanta mainly Muslim? I think it is. In today’s Koh Lanta Vlog, I’ll take you around the island. We are going to check out a local food market, visiting a viewpoint, riding through some villages (which remined me a lot of Kampungs - villages - in Malaysia). Finally, we also going to check out Koh Lanta Old Town. Riding trough Koh Lanta really showed me a totally different side of Thailand - Super cool!
Have you visited Koh Lanta? Let me know in the comments ⬇️

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently living in Thailand, making Thailand travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Bangkok and Thailand. I will be traveling Thailand, showing you around local places in Bangkok or try lots of different Thai food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Bangkok now and Thailand 2021 from a more authentic local point of view.

Super cool exploration at Koh Lanta, Ken. It's like you are back in a Malaysian "kampung" 👍👍 It's always wonderful to see this non touristy places where tourists will not visit. Just like you, l, too, like to see this type of village vibes. Interesting to "follow" you around that small " bazaar ramadan"...lots of food/drinks to choose. A nice spot, facing a "pirate " ship to try your food and sugar cane drink 😋😋 Interesting content, always fun and entertaining to watch your vlog. Great job, Ken 💪

If you go into local hardware shops, where they sell all the nets, wires, scarecrows, etc the locals use, not western style you see in the big cities, catapults are cheap and easy to find, just before the last rice harvest when hundreds of tiny birds appear to steal the rice, the locals use catapults to launch high into the air over the fields small quite loud bangers to scare the birds away, early morning and late in the afternoon, I don’t need an alarm clock to wake me in the morning.

may in the south is quiet season, many places are extremely quiet if not close altogether even when there is no covid. In the south while your around the area maybe look into, koh muk, and kradan as well as lipe and bulone leh. You will probably be the only person on bulone, check and see if sea gypsy restauraunt and bungallow are open and that all you need on that island.

Southern of Thailand used to be a few small Malay kingdom back 500 years ago, before siam(thailand today) destroyed and demolished this small malay kingdom...siam kingdom got help by british to devide n concer small malay kingdom by thier feel like it...like a game dividing a loot after a good raid...krabi, phuket ranong and untill southern of Myanmar, used to be a part of Kedah Tua kingdom (Old Kedah Kingdom)... Many places in southern thailand used to be in malay language, but after thailand been modernize, all this name change to thai slang...such as krabi (gheribi), phuket(bukit means hill in malay), trang(terang means bright), koh phi phi (pulau api-api), ranong(rundung), songkhla (Singgora), and many more...muslim in southern thai are malays like malay in Malaysia, but sadly, they can't speaks malay anymore, only part of Pattani (Patani), Yala (Jala/fish net), and Narathiwat (Menara/tower) can speak malay...the malay they speak 90% similar to Kelantan Malay...this is the a jizz of history, why southern thailand feels like more Malaysia then central Thailand 😊😀😀😀

Ken A lot of Southern Thailand islands are muslim majority like Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe, Koh Yao Noi as well as strong Muslim population in Krabi/Ao Nang. Phuket has a 20% muslim population there too and there is a muslim floating village Koh Panyee close to James Bond Island. I agree that Southern Thailand feels a lot more like Malaysia. I went to these islands anyway and loved Koh Lanta. I suspect at one point that Koh Phi Phi was a muslim majority island. I did see this mosque in Koh Lanta but there is another one I went to on the island. Ao Nang has a huge mosque there where I went to. From a Muslim guy in the UK

From my visit to the Malaysia-Thai border region (in Narathiwat Province) it did indeed seem a lot like rural Kelantan. Except the Thais do a better job at preserving the forests than we do - just across the border into Malaysia they've logged it pretty mercilessly. The place names were mainly corrupted Malay - you'd have to think about what they were (for instance, there was a place called "Bukita" - obvious "Bukit something", but what exactly we weren't able to find out. My favorite was Baan Gajahmati (Dead Elephant Village) - there's a Kampung Gajah Mati in Pahang, some distance north of Mentakab.
