Thames Water: Ministers weigh up contingency plans for collapse

The government has begun drawing up contingency plans for the collapse of Thames Water amid growing doubts in Whitehall about the ability of Britain’s biggest water company to service its £14bn debt-pile.
Water firms have accrued £54bn in debt since privatisation - but paid out dividends to shareholders of £66bn, according to an analysis by The Guardian newspaper last year.

Just cease their assets and don't pay one penny for them and re- nationalize! All the Company debts should be written off at no expense to the British Public.

Are but all those rich shareholders will loose out and who are some of the share holders uhm...........most probably those pushing for the emergency order to get the tax payer to keep it buoyant whilst the company is plundered, in my opinion.

Just to put #ThamesWater issue into perspective; Since 1991, it’s accrued a debt of £54billion. In the same time, they’ve paid out £57billion to their shareholders.

People think water privatisation is a failure but it succeeded in delivering orofit which is why it was flogged off.

It's failed from the point of view of delivering clean water, looking after supplies and is still needing public funding which goes straight to shareholders.

I wish I could make millions from doing a terrible job but I don't belong to the exclusive club of bosses that just move from job to job making millions and never have to achieve anything.

And are there any links between individuals in the government/parliament and investor who are going to loose out if Thames Water were to collapse? Always the taxpayer who has to fork out whilst the rich get richer in my opinion.

It is weird because they deal with water in a certain area but they deal with sewages over a larger area so where I am Thames water deals with the sewage but not the water supply

All essential services should be owned by the people for the people. We need gas, electricity, broadband, petrol, trains, airports , water etc to be in our hands not some cowboy company that only cares about profit. It seems to me that basically the company has stolen the money loaned to them and given it to shareholder's. In any normally well balanced society they would be criminally investigated.

She came in, cut redundancy packages from 3 weeks per year served to 2weeks per year, cut overtime rates to single time on every single day of the year (including Christmas Day). Stood her ground for 5months until we buckled in December and accepted a 5% payrise. She took £4.5m in salary and bonuses. Promised lots, delivered nothing and walked out without working a day’s notice. Good riddance.

I am just going to put it out there, just a theory, but the Thames catchment area, i.e. greater London is hugely overcrowded, 90% of migrants gravitate toward that area, all the water and sewage systems needed to sustain the area are simply overwhelmed in part due to numbers. Its getting worse and worse, yes there is underinvestment and corporate greed-mismanagement but no one has suggested the human numbers involved in the mess. Why isn't immigration and the numbers involved never spoken about?

No one in London pays their bills, but this is one occasion when I'm on their side. We should all do the same thing with these water companies, the government should re-nationalise 'em, they're all owned by foreigners anyway.

The government has just told Birmingham City Council to pay back immediately £760 million now the water crisis has come to light. My question is will they still find money for Ukraine 🇺🇦 😅
