I like what you said about Sweetener being predominantly about healing, which is why it still stands as a valid artistic statement. I know some people might look back at it as being “fake” with this new hindsight disclosed in this album, but I think the concept of a public persona gets unfairly vilified as lacking emotional truth. I remember in her interview with Ebro about putting on One Love Manchester that she both felt the weight of being absolutely terrified to perform again and her equally compelling desire to be a strong, comforting presence for her fans during this dark period. In that respect, Sweetener is a body of work chronicling her coming into her own as a woman, and Thank U, Next is a testament to her willingness to keep growing as a person. I definitely have a preference between the two, but I have a huge amount of respect for the maturity of her artistry as of late.

Sweetener was her trying to convince herself she was okay, as well as burying herself in musical experimentation. Dating Pete and trying to take comfort in a relationship, covering an Imogen Heap song, one of her favourite artists, probably to comfort herself and remind her why she loves music. Sweetener is Ariana being falsely positive and happy, like actual sweetener and sugar alternatives, in order to help her fans and be a beacon. Thank U, Next, is bleak honesty. Her comfort relationship crumbled, she'd done what she had to do for the fans and families of Manchester victims, and now it's her era to explore her darkness and the trauma underlying everything. Sweetener is insisting you'll be okay without entirely believing it, TUN is the aftermath of accepting you may be okay but you're not, you know, okay. I love both albums and they need each other to be fully appreciated or understood tbh. I definitely prefer the sound of TUN but can't understand Sweetener hate... I think sweetner was meant to healing and show het feeling happy and her friends being there for her, but also being in love at the time. I think the happiness was genuine, at the time

Kai Bishop I don’t believe that AT ALL. Ariana WAS happy in those moments, but she definitely made some mistakes and wasn’t ready for a whole new relationship with Pete. Doesn’t mean her feelings then weren’t real. When Mac passed, she realized Pete wasn’t right for her and she was obviously extremely broken. Does that mean she didn’t feel joy and excitement and love during her time with Pete? No, it doesn’t. But that was ONE part of her life and this album is about another part of her life. We live, learn and grow.

@@witchf4ce310 I'm not saying her happiness was entirely false or empty, I'm saying a lot of her public upbeatness was put on. She was definitely reeling and spiraling after Manchester and still chose to put out an album with uplifting, happy tones. And yes, it absolutely was to help cheer herself up and keep her mind away from darker places, which she's openly admitted to. She's been talking about music being a tool for healing since the start of this era. I do believe her and Pete genuinely care for each other but she admits on this album he wasn't who she thought he was and she was forcing a certain perspective of him in her mind that wasn't fair to either of them. Fake Smile is literally about her happiness being a front to shield her deeper issues so she can appear strong for those around her and won't be cast as a victim and how she has to stop and show her darkness and anger more and not bottle shit up.

i have the same opinion as you about the meaning of Sweetener and TUN albums/eras. and i can relate cause i listened Sweetener songs a lot after what i called « my happiness period » cause when this period was over, i was so sad and depressed, nostalgic. but i tried to pretend i was okey, i was healed without any process. i wanted to be healed just like that. but it doesn’t work like that. so i started to listen a lot TUN album and it’s hard cause i’m going through my bad period since the beginning but i tried to accept it, to heal and to move on. it takes time. but i’m much better and i will keep going to be much better. so that’s why Sweetener and Thank u next albums are additional. They are masterpieces. ps : i still think Dw album remains superior.🖤😏💍

literally my mood these last months.. my happiness period. when it was over i wanted to look forward and say i will keep going to be happy, relativise.. but then... i realized i was lying to myself, and i wasn’t okey.. i wanted to stop deny what i was hiding since so much time. so i admitted and now i’m feeling better. it’s important to admit it isn’t okey. that you are hurting. because after you realized and admitted, best things will happen. and you will be healed with the time. ❤️✨ sweetener and thank u next album are really complementary and beautiful. 😍

1. Fun fact, Nonna was actually talking about not being able to find a hearing aid that would work for her. But Ariana took that clip in a different direction for Bloodline obviously. 😂😂 She mentioned it in her interview with Zach Sang. 2. NASA originally had a countdown to start the track but Frankie and Shangela visited the studio one day and after hearing the track Shangela, said that "one step for" bit and Ari told her to hop in the booth and say it again. 3. In My Head didn't feature the voicemail from Doug at first but the original option faced a copyright risk so they used Doug's voicemail instead and it fit since he happened to say it was all in Ari's head. 4. In regards to Ghostin, Scooter pushed her to keep the track on the album. 5. Ari said at the moment the tour setlist is around 30 songs but could change at some point

“Sweetener had to walk, so this album could run” yes honey!! 👏👏 I truly think TUN would not exist, or at least not have turned out the way it did, without sweetener happening first. Ariana needed to make that album, for herself more than anything. Is it her best? Definitely not. Some of the songs are a production mess & just not that good...the light is coming? We don’t know her. However, it was an important and necessary part of her discography. TUN literally wouldn’t be the same without sweetener. Tired of people sh*ting on it. TUN is a better album in my opinion, but there still are some really great songs on our girl sweetener too. 🍬

In my head hit me HARD because that was literally my last relationship. Me seeing who he could be and creating this incredible guy in my head when he was literally never going to be that in real life and everyone saw how toxic he was except me. I love ghostin. It was almost pulled from the album. She started writing it and stopped cause it was so hard then they revisited few weeks later and finished it then recorded it. Apparently there was suppose to be some more lines but she couldn’t finish it. She didn’t wanna include it in the album. Just barely made it on there. So glad

She never listened to that song after it was recorded and in a meet & greet one of the twins played a guess a song or something like that with fans and he started playing ghostin and Ariana was really mad at him and begged him to turn that off

The album is best played when the tracklist is played "upside down" in my opinion. Starting with "break up with yo.." and ending with "imagine". It almost feels like the album is meant to be played this way, keeping in theme with her 'upside down' era. It sounda weird lol but you should really try it and the album flows way better this way.

I believe that Bad Idea is about Mac. Listen, when she says “forget about him”, “ima call you over here to numb the pain” “gotta find somebody quickly” . This song is about Ariana finding comfort or whatever in somebody “temporary” to numb the pain of losing Mac

I agree with what you said about sweetener. I feel like she was trying to force herself to feel better. Trying to feel emotions that she wasn’t really feeling at the time it was released. This album is like her saying you know what I wasn’t okay and that’s okay because I’m getting there at my own pace.

When you were talking about your aunt passing away and you were listening to sweetener, I FELT THAT. I was never a huge fan of sweetener, I only liked a few songs. Then my brother passed away and I listened to ntltc and get well soon constantly, two songs I was never a big fan of before. They helped me so much. When I was in a dark place in my mind, I just sat in my room and turned those songs all the way up. They’re so special to me, and sweetener the album became one of my favorites.
