I was a teenager when Steely Dan was pumping out this music and from a musical perspective I felt like I was truly spoiled by the likes of these performers, musicians, lyricists, eclectic individuals who helped to broaden my understanding of music and its power. You've now heard 3 songs off Aja and it still has songs which can go head to head with the likes of Aja, Peg and Home at Last. Hard to imagine but true. "It's true, it's true."

Fun song, based on Homer's "The Odyssey",("well the danger on the rocks is surely passed, still I remain tied to the mast")- referring to how Odysseus resists the temptation of the sirens. Also, cheers to you both as you continue on your wonderful exploration of Steely Dan's music. It's fun to spot the "drink de jour" in most songs. This one mentions retsina, a flavored Greek wine. Happy travels!

That solo at 9:30 is played on a free-reed instrument called a melodica. It basically looks like a small keyboard with an attached mouthpiece/wind controller. Fagen used it quite a bit in his solo work.

Hi, I really enjoyed that. I was very late in the day with getting into Steely Dan [ in my 40''''s ] but have made up for it since acquiring every album + solo works. Wonderful music. Thankyou. I also want to say I am really pleased Nick got his guitar back repaired and he is happy again having it back, where it belongs. I got my 1st electric guitar when I was 18yrs old. A Stratocaster Natural with Ash body + Maple neck. I love my guitar. I wanted that one as it was the type & colour of Richie Blackmoor's guitar in the 70's with Deep Purple. They were the group I was first introduced to rock music, hearing an album called "Fireball". I had never heard music like it before with amazing guitar solo's. Still my favourite DP album today and I'm in my 60's.

Love your seasoned take on first listen SD songs. There is a different sounding song of theirs on their Royal Scam album called Haitian Divorce. The island vibe is SO strong and funky here. You will know it's Steely (complex and layered) but it is slightly different. Their chord voicings, guitar and vibraphone are really highlighted here. Enjoy.

You got to listen to Home at Last, at last! So fine to see my favorite reaction couple light up to... The impossible perfection of Steely Dan, and the gold standard work of Larry Carlton, Tom Scott and Bernard Purdie. Carlton, guitarist, once said that SD wrote a chord that was nearly impossible for a human hand to play. And yet, of course, he played it... And... only Steely Dan had the chutzpah to take the first classic of Western Literature, Homer's Odyssey and....rewrite the ending. In their telling of it, Odysseus withstands the temptations of the sriens, but then realizes that the road really has become his home. "Still I remain tied to the mast... Could it be that I have found my home at last?" In other words, he didn't go home (which does happen in the original, with all kinds of complications...). Don't know the name of it, but I think the high-pitched thing that you hear Donald play toward the very end is something that looks like a slim rectangular keyboard with a mouthpiece at the end that he blows into. Only like 2-3 octaves of keys I think. I've seen him play it in several YT live concerts. Watch some of them and you'll see him play it. No idea what it's called though.

Listen to the entire album then watch that excellent documentary. They sit as the console and isolate individual tracks, play alternate solos, etc. They were such perfectionists, they hire 6 or 7 different guitarists just for 'Peg' to get the perfect solo. Who else does that?

There's a reason why audiophiles use this album as a benchmark to test out new sound-systems. It's sonic perfection. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were perfectionists when it came to their music and they would meticulously tweak every aspect of every song to get it just how they wanted it. They'd go through drummer after drummer to find the right one for every song. I've heard that they would try out every possible combination of microphones at every distance from the amps and instruments until everything sounded perfect. Nobody did it quite like they did.
@pedal4ever
@pedal4ever 2 жыл бұрын
It helps when the perfection of their recordings has the absolute best musicians on the planet. There's too many to list. Jeff Skunk Baxter, Denny Dias, Larry Carlton, Hugh McCracken, Rick Derringer, Steve Khan and many others on guitar, for starters. The Best. You want horns? How about Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Pete Christlieb, Ernie Watts, David Sanborn, and more. On drums, Steve Gadd, Rich Marotta, and the great Bernard Purdie. On bass, Walter Becker of course, Chuck Rainey, and the great Marcus Miller. Let's face it. No other band came close to this level of all-star talent. Fagan and Becker picked the best of the best for their albums. Perhaps the best rock group of all time in just pure musical talent.

"..Fagen and Becker were still not satisfied with the basic tracks for some of the songs, particularly with regard to the timing of the drum tracks.." "..It's too bad that we can't get a machine to play the beat we want, with full-frequency drum sounds, and to be able to move the snare drum and kick drum around independently." So they paid $150,000 to get a drum machine made. This was for Gaucho.

Love that you guys did these two. And yes, that's David Palmer on the vocals -- another great one-off vocal on that album is drummer Jim Hodder singing Midnite Cruiser. Anyway, one of the great things about Steely Dan is how consistently good they are, song after song after song; if you asked ten SD fans to list their Top 10 SD tunes, there'd be almost no overlap across some of those lists. That being said, people have been asking you to do Kid Charlemagne, and they're not wrong.

The song "Don't take me Alive" The artist (a sought after studio musician at the time) the legendary Larry Carlton. As a young man he made a name for himself by doing work with Joni Mitchel, Steely Dan and so many others. In time he rose to legendary status in the jazz guitar world. Perhaps best know for his later work with the Crusaders and then Fourplay. He's played on over 100 gold albums. And, of course, because I hear Beatles influence. There are some great performances on the two albums I checked out. This one and Terraformer. I just have to listen a couple tracks at a time or I’m speedy too. Lol. Thanks, Rand. ✨🤪

I'm very surprised there wasn't more acknowledgement of the Thank You Scientists track from your audience . . . That was really good! :). Its a band I've known about but hadn't sat down to listen to. I can already tell they have a lot of influences, and their other tracks probably don't sound anything like this 1 track (That's "Progressive Rock/Prog Metal" for ya' ;). I guess I get the correlation of the Beatles "She's Leaving Home" (and checkout another Beatles track "Honey Pie"), is that the tracks sound like they come from the "Turn of the Century"; early Jazz ("Ragtime"), Minstrel Shows, Vaudeville, Showtunes/Stage Musicals, and the Barber Shop Quartet Harmonies. And the theme of "Leaving" along with the Steely Dan track (after reading the lyrics for both tracks). I will have to look into their 3 albums. As for Steely Dan, "Aja" is ICONIC and tracks were a standard on AOR FM Radio in Los Angeles, but I've been hearing the tracks and the album since I was 14 in 1977. The engineering/producing is top of the heap, the musicianship set the standard for session players and composition . . . But its _always_ great to hear new music that does NOT get radio-play and adds something new (again, I'm sure their other tracks have a unique sound and are not limited by time constraints or ideas). I grew-up on Steely Dan's music, and wore-out my 45 rpm record single of "Reeling in the years". But I love the music of the past as well-as contemporary music from the heavy, extreme, to the challenging, melodic and epics :). - Thanks MM & NnL :D.

I have been a fan of Steely Dan since I was in high school. I graduated in 1976. One of my favorite songs that you rarely see requested or talked about is Chain Lightning from the album Katy Lied. The only problem with the song is it's too short. Doctor Wu is another good one from that album. Please do Chain Lightning.. I would love to see your reaction and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Watching you guys listen to these songs for the 1st time is like me listening to them for the 1st time again.

_The Royal Scam_ ,alas, was the theme music to the failure of my marriage in ‘76-‘77. "Home At Last" was the one song I clung to for hope that I would someday find my way out of that hell. I did, eventually, and the song still reminds me that when times are tough, eventually you will see that the "danger on the rocks is surely past." Thanks for playing it. PS: I promise to become a patron if you do a reaction to the _Aja_ documentary!

First band seems to throw all together at once: Beach Boys harmonies, Electric Light Orchestra and Beatles, a bit of Queen and some prog structures. Enjoyed that 🙂 pity it was such a short tune, as I was curious where this would be going. Nick sounds as if he's caught a slight cold?! If so: hope you get rid of it soon. Great choice Michele. Despite the other more well known songs this is probably my favourite song on Aja. As I've said before about the Dan, if you leave aside the brilliant musicianship, it's always their brilliant harmonies that do it for me. I'd put them up their with CSN and Fleetwood Mac in that respect. People tend to forget the great choruses so many of their songs have, My Old School, Do It Again, Pretzel Logic. Another one that swings like this one is Babylon Sisters, probably my favourite Dan song. Waiting now Nick and Lex for you to do some Talk Talk. I think they'll be right up your alley. I know Michele sent you Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock. The Rainbow from Spirit would be a good place to start.

@Vincent Grogan’s point below: Well, OK, I went through a period from loving Steely Dan (having seen them live on their first tour) to not exactly hating them, but being a little off the Dan train, and then coming back years later to embrace them again. That middle part came about because there was a narrative by some in the late 70s that SD were too polished and intellectual to be “real” rock and roll - this was about the time that punk rock was taking hold and it became fashionable to rebel against what we now think of as classic rock. And at the time, I kinda felt that way, preferring Ramones, Elvis C, etc. to the more jazz-inflected SD sound. Ironic and inconsistent of me, because I was listening to a fair amount of jazz at that time too. Anyway, came back around to embrace both brash and finesse. Sorry for the long story, but I thought it might shed a little light into how some people might not love this music.

Hi Jeff. Makes total sense. Thanks for that outlook. I also embraced Punk but I was greedy enough to keep my jazz-influenced groups close to my heart also. Jazz and Beat Generation culture just seemed counter-culture enough to me already. Haha. But I hear you. And to Nick’s point about balancing “polished” with “robotic” or over-worked: I get that too. Steely Dan just always seemed “off” enough with an unexpected lyric or tasty notes here and there to redeem it from sounding too predictable to me. Thanks, though. Love hearing your story. ✨🤪

Gonna have to check more Thank You Scientist. Hadn't heard of them before. This track is very much in the same vein is another band I love, Jellyfish. The two of you might want to check a track from Jellyfish's album Spilt Milk ( every track is really good ). Begin with Joining A Fanclub, for instance. Everything on the Aja album is fire. Same goes for their Gaucho album. One of my absolute favorite tracks from Steely Dan is Pretzel Logic ( from the album Pretzel Logic ).

I believe that instrument you were doubting--is it a trumpet or a keyboard?--is either an ocarina (like a woodwind organ sound) or a synth, since he's heavy into the one he straps on like a guitar. I enjoy how Becker & Fagen sneaked in Vic Feldman on vibraphones, an instrument that doesn't get much love beyond jazz. Nick, since you in particular seem to respond to clean brassy arrangements, you (and Lex) should seriously commit a bit of time to examine Chicago Transit Authority, Blood Sweat and Tears, and certainly Earth Wind & Fire. Serious rockin' groups with massive brass dynamics!
