I might be a minority here, but I like sat navs for road trips. Usually when planning a trip, we scout the possible roads ahead - check some blogs etc to see what routes people generally like, nowadays even chatgpt is quite helpful and then look at those roads in street view. After that we simply force google to takes us trough a route via multiple points. Benefit is you can plan a route with stops in advance and then in the hotel you can enjoy the breakfast. One more benefit of riding with open navigation in phone is that you will see when you are about to hit the twisties

On the MT09 topic: I have a first gen MT09 with full spec Hyperpro progressive suspension, set up to my weight and sporty riding style. This is the set-up with a racing shock in the back. The suspension is so good that the MT09 never gets to rear it’s ugly head, which is a lack of rigidity in the chassis. I ride it hard and have taken it to the track. It is just as good as the ‘23 SP. Haven’t tried the ‘24 yet. Now running a pair of S23 Bridgestones and the combination is superb. My point: spend money on these upgrades instead of a new bike and save some change to do nice trips and track days.

The disconnect between launch reviews and owner experience comes from the living and maintaining a bike vs. just taking it for a ride. Launch format is a very limited look at the bike. The bias doesn’t come from the reviewer, it comes from the format.

I know exactly what you mean regarding Sat navs. The moment when you said "there's something about opening a paper map at breakfast at the hotel in the morning, pushing your coffee and croissant out of the way", the grin on your face was priceless. I was grinning at the same time, recollecting fond memories. I don't use sat nav, but tend to use Google maps on the phone when I get to my destination to find the hotel, only if I have to though.

Totally agree with you about the Monsters. I had a '07 S4RS which was loud , angry and a delight to ride. Recently I test rode a new one and found it completely lacking the character of my old Monster. Gotta love the new rules for intakes and exhausts.

This topic about the integrity of bike launch reviews has been talked to death and while I agree that journalists can be unbiased with some conscious effort, the viewers have to do a mix of reviews to make their decision. MCN long term reviews are worth their weight in gold in this category(*cough* 1290 superduke evo *cough*), along with other long term owner reviews on KZfaq and other forums. Launch reviews are nice but mostly for entertainment value rather than something that can be used to make a purchase decision.

In the first year of WorldSBK in 1988, Fabrizio Pirovano was 2nd in the championship (93,5points) on a FZ 750 (not FZR 750) just 5,5 points behind Fred Merkel on the championship winning RC 30 (99points). Davide Tardozzi was 3rd on the Bimota YB4 with 91 points. Pirovano rode for the BYRD Team (Belgarda Yamaha Racing Division). In 1989 Pirovano switched to the OW-01 and stayed with the Yamaha Team throughout 1993 with new YZF 750 before joining Team Ducati Tardozzi in 1994.

Hi Neevesy, you mentioned the generally soft suspensions on Japanese bikes. I ride a '21 CB 1000r. The suspension is relatively soft (in that class of bikes) but I do not find this to be a problem on public, bumpy roads. From my experience, hard suspension on bad surface can cause wheels to loose contact with tarmac for a millisecond or two. This results in less grip than a more forgiving setup could provide in such circumstances. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Love your channel, cheers!

It is like sitting down on a beer with an elderly (no offense :) ) experienced friend rider and just swallowing all the information and experience he provides via his stories. Keep them coming! On the question side - I kind of miss some of the reviews of older bikes. MCN's YT channel hasn't got much content for bikes before 2010s. For instance - I am riding gen2 Super Duke 990 from 2008 and would like your opinion on it? But not only. I remember when the FZ750 came out in 1985 and the press article (titled "A bunch of fives") here in Australia mentioned a couple of things that stuck in my mind; valve clearance adjustment interval of 42,000km and the top speed of 254kmh. As a 22 year old at the time, I lusted for one. I think it was a bit cheaper than the GSXR750 as well. On the track, it was Michael Dowson & Kevin Magee who brought out the best in the FZ. I never got to own or ride one, but I can appreciate Paul Berryman's comments.

I had an 86 FZ-750 with a yosh pipe, great street sport bike. To this day, if I happen across one that sound is music to my ears.

15 yrs as a London despatch rider during the 80's and 90's means I could lead 4 of my mates round Scotland and Northumberland for 6 days with just a cursory glance at a map first thing in the morning. Maps keep you invested in your journey unlike Twat Navs.

The fz discussion reminds of a story a few years ago..maybe in two wheels...they had a group testing 600's....as an experiment, they had secretly put an older fzr600 engine in a new frame and running gear...... everyone loved it over the new bike and wanted to know when it was being released....it was so much more usable with torque and power available way lower than the current bikes on test.... I recall the same from a couple of favs I've owned..my rf900 and my zx9.

ive yet to see or hear any journalist or influencer ask ktm about the chocolate camshafts on the 790/890/901 engine.

Re the FZ750, I was never a fan loved my LC and first big bike 92 Fireblade But since I saw the Lawson 86 Daytona bike I find myself paying homage withe a 1FN resto mod, better brakes wheel fork etc and all being well a Racefit legend pipe. Bit of a change of direction from the the modern stuff I buy but it’s got me fired up well and truly and that’s what it’s all about for me. Love the channel kt up

Hi Neevesy I'd like to ask your opinion about rear brake use on sport bikes, both road and track. I recently watched a random dude's video, he was blasting down on the Nurburgring on his R1. In the comments of that video he said that he's hardly using any rear brake at those speeds, and people backed him up, demonizing the use of rear brakes on sport bikes.. I think the opposite. My rear brakes wear out together with the fronts more-less. I think it is important, to use the rear brake for bike control. If it wasn't then there wouldn't be so many rear brake setups on the bars in various GP and WSBK bikes..

'89 After a string of strokers I was looking to buy my first big 4 stroke bike and contemplating the FZ750 but plumped for the all new FZR600. I didn't regret my choice!

You have been around it before but I don’t think you have addressed it in your previously videos - electronic suspension and setup. For the electronic semi-automatic suspension packages on new bikes - like the BMWs, Ducaties, KTMs etc. - it seems the suspension will adapt to your needs of the day whether it is track days, spirited riding on the roads or riding in the city. It seems that the new electronic semi-automatic suspension package suits all situations and all riders. However before the world of glory - for a proper bike set up you would have to at least get the right springs front and rear but probably also the right shimmings and afterward adjust preload, compression and rebound. Is it so with today’s electronic semi-automatic suspension that there is a one size fit all spring for the shock and forks and the adjustment range can cope with the rest according to your situation - or should you ideally also for the electronic semi-automatic suspension re-spring this to your weight for optimised performance within available settings in the menu or would a re-springing confuse the algorithm in the system?

And loved the continuity of having him wear your glasses!🤓 On the journo bias thing - I am not so sure the manufacturers really worry that a negative review from a couple of people will have that much consequence in terms of sales, which is obviously the point of the marketing push. Any publicity and all that. And if it did they would REALLY make it worth the journo's while to sing the praises of the bike and Neevesy would be doing these from his Bond villian style hilltop compound with private track. Does anyone think we read an MCN report and rush out to slap down 20k on that basis? Not the manufacturers that's for sure.

I think Paul was spot on with the analysis of the FZ. No matter how good it went, the looks were not going to cut it. We all wanted full faired race reps and the poor old FZ was so yesterday with its half fairing.

Hey mr Neevesy. I do see a big a difference between journalists, and "influencers" and how they are treated. Journalists come for the bike, to ride it, get the details, the updates, etc. Where influencers (I hate that word) are flown in for "the experience".... There have been a few introductions in the past years where these two animals were strictly separated. Probably a good thing?

Thanks for the tips Michael (Simon knows his onions) - I've put Moto Voodoo on my list (always struggle a bit with body position). I got back into biking again in my late 30's, my local dealer had a low mileage FZ750 (it looked brand new), the engine (for it's time) was phenomenal and it was a fully faired and in a good colour scheme (didn't even mind the square headlight). It's funny I can usually always remember my number plates - never forget the plate on my FS1E DX & RD250LC (the LC was PNO 413V and my 17th birthday was 21st July, I just couldn't wait 10 days). I think the reason I can't remember the plate on the FZ (even though it was a great bike for it's time) is just because I didn't love it so much.👍

As far as the GSXR vs FZ. Which was the better bike at the time? Listening to your guest, it seems that the suzuki was more visually appealing, but the yamaha was actually yards better in engineering. I recall seeing both as new and too me, the suzuki was a bit ugly and not very advanced for the time. I was buzzing around on a RZ350, so I had no need of either of those boat anchors.

@neevesybikes this issue with people having concerns about motorcycle launches and reviews…. The reality is like you said, it’s your opinion on the day. The other reality is that people are thinking that your review is the answer to them purchasing the best bike for them. We all know, as you rightly said, most all new bikes are brilliant and in fact the vast majority can’t ride these machines to their limit, even on a racetrack! The answer here, buy a bike that you like the look of and the one that puts the biggest grin on your face. People get too wrapped up in “nit picking” reviews. Keep up the great work 👍🏻

Hey Michael. Thanks for these great videos. Meta question for you, Biker vs Bike. Should MCN also describe the type of rider that a bike would suit? I recently got a GSX8S and its a super bike. When I watched your MCN video you talked about how it had space. As I am the same height as you this immediately appealed to me. But there are so many other biker related parameters; roads they ride, how they ride, why they ride, rider experience levels, etc. I would find a bike review with some biker context really useful. Such as this bike would suit a taller rider, who does lots of track days and doesn't do any commuting. Or this bike is for someone who is wealthy, likes to pose on a Sunday at bike ride outs and doesn't really care about reliability. The biker descriptors are up for discussion, just throwing those out there. This make sense or have I finally lost it.🙃

I had access to a mint 1988 FZ750 in the mid 90's for a summer.. I was a kid, it was fun but I didn't really appreciate what it for what it was other than I had space for a cute girl on the back. Would I love to have one now and appreciate it more? - Hell Yes.

Regarding the FZ750 question; WEIGHT! As I recall, similar power levels, but the FZ with square tube steel frame was perhaps 50-60 lbs heavier than the GSX-R. I actually liked the looks of the half-faired FZ, but the overall sporting performance was lacking due to the weight. I briefly owned one in the mid-90s.

Hi Michael thanks for spending your time and energy into producing these videos and being willing to share your insights and experience, I really appreciate each one that you do and would love to see more of the what makes this bike great videos, it sounds like your friend Paul could help out with some of his collection, he's obviously very enthusiastic about his Yamaha's. I owned a FZ750 for a couple of years and really enjoyed it, but it's letdown for me were the skinny tyres which didn't help when cornering. Anyhow on to my question, what in your opinion is the reason why motorcycles are getting physically smaller. The reason why I'm asking is that as well as being tall at 6' 3" I'm also rather 'big boned' and when I sit on modern sports or sports touring bikes it just looks stupid. Case in point I currently own a first generation Fazer 1000 which is pretty much of it's time and nothing unusual for a sports tourer in terms of size but the later FZ1 is noticeabley smaller and more squat and doesn't fit me at all, and it seems like now the majority of bikes are like this with your only choice if you want a physically larger road based bike being the tall rounders or hyper tourers. What do you think is the reason for manufacturers to go this route?

Got 60k on my new to me 09 and 25 yes riding unfortunately can't try all in the segment . I taught u might have options on my next purchase to maybe find my next best of in a few years . ktm lc8c engine in 790, 890 and norden 901.... you must be aware of the camshaft wear problem..... ktm are throwing out of warranty owners under the bus and refusing to accept liability..... you must be aware of this problem, but it is not reported in the mainstream motorcycle media...... why not

A question or two I hope you will get round to answering sometime. I watch all of them anyway so I'll know.😉 I am of the carb era and know nothing of these modern ECU injector set ups. People mention flashing the ECU and setting the engine management up on a dyno to release the restrictions placed on bikes by manufacturers. Can you explain the reality of this please and does it invalidate the warranty? I am a big fat bloke. Could be Lamb Chops body double for the movie (no offence Chopsy). I got an SX1000 last year and really enjoy it but recognise the suspension is just not suited to me. I've cranked the rear preload to about max and got the sag on the forks about right and it is better but wondered if you can tell me the process for getting an upgraded system installed. Do I take the bike somewhere and they sort it? Am I expected to strip the bike, send parts and specs; then they will redo or replace my kit and I have to refit? Hope these aren't dumb questions...

Hi Neevesy, got a topic / discussion piece for you having just bought a 2004 CBR1000RR Fireblade after having a 2010 GSXR 750 and riding a Yamaha FZ1 for the last 5 years. I’ve come to realise the Fireblade is possibly too quick to enjoy on the road! Now I appreciate the bike is only as fast as you want to ride but to truly enjoy revving the engine out you are at silly speeds. I didn’t expect the difference to be as noticeable as it is. I love the ‘blade, the 2004 is my favourite along with the 954 so I don’t intend to change it and perhaps changing the gearing will help massively (I don’t need to do 90mph in first!). I know there’s been plenty of content regarding the 750 but honestly, I think it’s the best bike for the road docile below 8k rpm but incredible fun above! Do you / anyone else truly think you can enjoy 1000’s on the road?

Michael, with respect, pay your own way on a launch trip and it takes out any doubt. Never will happen, but you can understand that settles it for good.

Have there been many motorcycle 'recalls' that are worth discussing ? I haven't seen any MC vids on the subject. I think there are no 'bad bikes' given modern CAD, Sims and CNC and design History; especially if yer 'civilised' when riding. There have been spectacular car fails -remember the Sludge fests of 2000's for VW and Audi or their emissions falsifications... Recently; was it Toyota with bad piston oilers ? Or Four Million Tesla's in 2022. Thanks for your vids and test rides. And MCN for the mid-weight test.

Before my question, a request! It would be great to see you on Revzilla’s High Side / Low Side podcast if you could make the time difference work! As for my question: I live in Japan and have started doing some track days recently on my do-it-all 2019 Tracer 900 GT+. It seems like splitting into slow and fast groups isn’t really a thing here as it is back home, which means I’m generally sharing the track with people much BOTH much faster, and much slower than me. Do you have any tips for both staying safe and not being a nuisance on track in such scenarios. Thanks, and I love the videos!

Between a BMW R1200R and my current KTM 1290 super adventure I briefly owned a Yamaha 900 tracer because everybody was raving about it. Sold it after 3 months because I found it to be horrible at high speed, so bad that I trust my vintage Suzuki T500 more. On that at least I know the frame is made of a la dent boiled spaghetti and it features a "request for speed reduction system" rather than brakes and so my driving style is adjusted back to the times I learned to ride, the 70ties. And so I don't fully agree with it's "just a different opinion". If a road tester is pulling wheelies all day he's just pleasing his own ego which in my opinion is what a journalism is about. I think you were one of the few making remarks about the MT09 handling, you also made remarks about the seat/position off the tracer to not be comfortable, both are correct and not "opinion related". Keep being a journalist 💪🏻

Hey Neevesy, Love your vids, hope you can answer a quandry for me... I've been out for a while, my last bike was an '05 R6 that I did a bunch of track days on, and I recently bought a '13 CBR600rr. The bike only had 2400 mi on it when I got it, it's completely stock, even had the original tires on it, which I swapped with Rosso 4 Corsa's per your recomendation, so I assume it runs the way Honda meant it to. Pulling out of my driveway, turning onto the street, on it's maiden voyage, and I nearly dropped it! The bike felt like I had somehow downshifted 2 gears at once without the clutch! I have come to understand that this is caused by 'decel fuel cut out'. Maybe I'm particularly sensitive to this given that my first streetbike was an RD250 (yes I'm that old) and have never liked a lot of engine braking, but this seems particularly egregious. Are all bikes like this these days? Is the CBR particularly bad? I haven't read anything about this being a concern in reviews, is it just 'normal'? I've yet to be able to figure out a way to ride around it, please tell me that the Mfr's have sorted this by now, I can't believe this is just 'accepted'. Thanks, Dave

I think the bmw G310r is somehow overlooked. The recent group test with the speed 400 , Enfield hunter and husqvarna svartiplen 401. ... Where was the bmw g310r? It is more than a viable alternative to the speed 400 for someone who doesnt want the retro looks or the extreme looks of the husky/ ktm

Hi mate, would you think it would be safe to buy a Benelli 1130 Trek Amazonas? The BMW and KTM Adventure bikes are insanely pricey here in Australia but there are a couple of Benellis for sale, they look good but I have no idea about reliability and/or parts availability. Have you ever ridden one? Would appreciate your input.

There are hundreds of 3-star reviews on MCN, and some below, many of which are for what could be considered 'key bikes' for manufacturers. So I think that's probably all the evidence needed that MCN isn't dishing out overly generous reviews to appease manufacturers (who must be gutted when they receive a 3-star or below review!). If MCN were scared of upsetting manufacturers, they'd probably need to remove the 'user reviews' section too - as it's there for people to give an honest, long term opinion on the bike (it's also the first place I - and I'm sure many others - look when considering a bike purchase). Personally I see a lot of other YT motorcycle reviews as entertainment over affirmation a bike is great, or not, anyway. Ultimately you can't tell if a bike is great for you until you've ridden it. And if you want to know long term reliability etc, MCN user reviews are your place. As an aside, well done and thanks Neevesy for taking on the tough questions, as I'm sure it would be easier not to bother.

100% disagree with you on the satnav issue. I like to plan my routes in detail, avoiding main roads...almost impossible to do without the nav.

Not sure what all this fuss is about regarding independent reporting. It is what he omits tells me what I need to know. If you follow the a Journo closely you easily decipher the truth.

Hi Neevesy, loving the content. I'm interested in doing track days in the future and understand the benefits of attending a riding school as it will also benefit my road riding too. My question is... Unless you have a degree of self discipline, do riders become over confident when transitioning back to road riding and essentially become worse or more dangerous riders than before they had the training for trying to push too hard. I'd like to think that I value my life enough not to be one of those people but I do see riders use the road as if it was a race track.

I have heard you and other journalists mentioning characteristics of bikes that you only discovered when you got them onto our bumpy and undulating roads that you weren't able to uncover on billiard table smooth spanish tarmac. Also, I have heard you saying that you weren't able to fully exploit a bikes abilities on the launch due to the conditions (thinking about the suzuki gx1000). That being said, what would your ideal launch scenario be, and do manufacturers ever consult you on the launch itself?

Sat Nav advice is the worst ive ever heard for touring. you can take any detour you fancy with sat nav and it will bring you back to where you are heading. I toured for years with maps and all was good but i toured all of Europe with sat nav and went to a new level. Ps they work in torrential rain.

The GSXR750 was 20 kgs lighter. Legendary

How do ask questions?

At the end of the day, a review is just an opinion, so even w/o external factors it's inherently biased and subjective. A purely objective review is an oxymoron, and a review can't perfectly predict how you will like a bike anyway. People are so lazy and unwilling to take responsibility for thinking and processing information. Not to take food off your plate Neevesy but if these folks dont "trust" reviews why do they keep reading them? Makes no sense.

I feel like the people who insist journalists say nice things to make sure they get invited to the next launch fail to realize that manufacturers need journalists. They get invited because of the eyeballs they bring. Just compare mcn youtube views on a bike to the manufacturers official channel on the same bike.

I think "Access Journalism" is definitely an approach companies employ in this age of Social Media driven marketing. Some companies, in some industries, are punitive in how they react to honest opinions. A poor review can mean not getting early access to the next new model, thus impacting the views, clicks, subs, and corresponding dollars that that represents. A long time photography KZfaqr just posted a blunt video on this topic in reaction to a flood of positive reviews by other "influencers" on a new camera that is a mish-mash of questionable and somewhat puzzling features. He had experienced a punitive reaction from that company due to a critical review he had previously written about one of the company's other products. Not a guess, the company actually told him they didn't think he'd like the camera so they didn't send him one. Such tactics are what feeds the cynicism about reviews in general. Unfortunately, good reviewers get lumped in with the not-so-good ones.

see that bias all the time when they review a model and comment on how crap the older version was but it was wonderful when new.

If journos were bought and paid for, they'd be far richer ;-) Now Internet influencers (I don't mean Reviewers) are the real deal when it comes to BS. I did my courtin' on the FZ750 ;-)
