The day Cloughie got the sack at Leeds United he went on Yorkshire TV's Calender programme to be interviewed by future MP Austin Mitchell - and sat next to previous Leeds boss, current England manager and nemesis Don Revie....what followed was TV gold...

Cloughie is incredibly honest and supremely intelligent. Revie was class but he got baited into personalising the argument. Two greats, nevertheless.

And actually he won the league better than Revie's side in 1977-1978, only losing 3 games and winning 25. I'm not english but I've seen tapes of that Nottingham Forest team and it was amazing. Besides that I love the honesty in Brian, you can tell that immediately...

@@tadhglattimore2439 I recognize Revie's achievements even though I'm a long life Cloughie fan. They were both great managers in their own right. Cloughie was about player discipline, smooth passing of the ball to feet and crosses into the box. Whereas, Revie preferred physical in your face football, wearing teams down with physical pressure and once they broke the opposition's confidence, then they would start playing build up football and feeding balls to their forwards. Revie's Leeds was capable of winning the European Cup. In those days, there were a lot of corrupt officials and they found themselves on the receiving end of dodgy decisions.

Peter Taylor indeed had a brilliant eye for a player but without him and without any money in the pot, Clough kept Forest up for another eleven years. Those years included three top-three league finishes (before 1993 they were never out of the top ten), two League Cup wins, an FA Cup final, and getting cheated out of a UEFA Cup final appearance (1984). Even if he had done nothing else previously, Clough would still be remembered as a top manager.

Lot of people don’t know this; Forrest won 2 European cups and finished runners up in a 3rd final. Years later it was found that the ref had been bribed in that final, So cloughs record would have been even more impressive!!

They lost a UEFA Cup semifinal against Anderlecht, and that was proved to be a game where the referee was bribed. Derby also lost a semifinal against Juventus in dubious circumstances. Again, Juventus were found to have bribed the German referee who died in a car crash shortly after. There was a feeling in the English game at the time that European clubs and officials were agains our sides winning mainly for many reasons.

He wanted to keep the system going - as Liverpool did from Shankly - with Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish. The directors proceeded to ruin in four years what he'd created in 13. If they would have listened to his advice - it might have been different.

@@adamdennison80 In 75 Clarke was cut down in the penalty area: no penalty given. Lorimer scored a fine goal which was disallowed. Leeds played some wonderful football that evening. The 1973 Cup winner final was even worse. It was later found the ref had been bribed. Leeds should have been awarded the trophy. The Revie team won a lot of trophies but deserved even more. Celtic, Ajax and then Leeds were for several years the best teams in Europe.

I've not watched the whole of this through before. The common narrative (from people who've probably only seen quotes from it) is that Clough destroys Revie and makes him look stupid but trying to look at it completley objectivley I don't see that. They are rivals that don't like each other but there is some respect there. Clough doesn't massively go in on Revie for his side being dirty as much as you might think. He also respects that Revie had a tough desicion to make whether he stayed at Leeds and tried to win the European Cup or take the job. I think those who say "Clough owns Revie" or whatever are probably doing so with the hindsight of Clough winning European Cups and Revie failing with (and then supposedley betraying) England. I'm a Leeds fan so will obviously defend Revie of course. There's no doubting Clough's achievements at Forest were probably the greatest of any English manager and that's fair enough.
