This is out of topic, but Denji is what you'd call a "Hybrid" (The community collectively calls them that). He's a human that can willingly turn into a devil and back. The same goes for the Katana Man in this episode (He's also a hybrid). Power is a fiend since it's the Blood Devil is possessing a human body (Fiends are weaker than their Devil form). Also, compared to "Hybrids", Fiends is where the Devil is in control of the body. They also always have a special head feature (Power has horns). Then there're the Devils themselves. And finally, the Human, who are the only ones that can make contracts with devils and fiends. A rule you should remember regarding contracts is that devils and fiends can't make contracts with other devils and fiends.

The sad reality this episode portrays is that sometimes, your best isn't good enough. Aki paid the price of using the Curse Devil but Katana revived, and Himeno used her entire body for a desperate contract, but was swallowed whole before being able to save anyone. The life of a Devil hunter is a constant struggle against death and opponents that almost always have an advantage over you, and it's their job to survive as long as they can.

I think in regards to the snake devil eating the ghost devil I think it has to do with the fact that snakes are very real threats meanwhile not a lot of people believe in ghosts.

That’s what I came up with. a devil strength is the combination of how many people fear it and how much harm they cause or potential cause. Ghosts are known but how many times they injury someone? Snakes are known just as much as ghosts but they cause harm. Also I think it’s possible the user’s strength/fear plays a role.

that plus devils aren't based just on fear or logic, but also mythology and their public perception, for instance, the bat devil that ate power, and her being unable to move ? it's an old myth that bats have anaesthetic saliva which is why that became one of its powers, fitting it "fed" off power, the blood fiend like a vampire when very few bats drink blood but that's what they're known for, essentially mythology and perception of them affects them. snakes are known to swallow things whole, so, it's devil swallows things whole.

Curse Devil countdown is that the user has to stab the victim 3 times with the nail for the effect to work, and then once the countdown reaches zero, then the Curse Devil's attack happens. Without the countdown, it's just a regular spike.

This part of the story was when I *really* got into it. We get a whole arc of getting to know the characters better and develop them, and then Himeno sacrifices herself, Makima gets shot and Aki is fighting alone and critically wounded, just like that. Himeno's death surprised me, but Makima getting shot genuinely shocked me to the point of having to take a breather. But *that* is what hooked me, because this was the story announcing it is not afraid in the slightest to kill off main characters.

Yeah, this was crazy in the manga. It was so sudden and such a total complete annihilation of the entire squad. Makima's death in particular was shocking as Hell.

Besides the obvious shocking moments of this episode, it's worth mentioning the talk between Himeno and Denji in the beginning, where she actually acknowledges the problematic age gap between the two of them that would have gotten her locked up if she would have actually taken advantage of him. There are too many anime to count that just ignore this fact, so it's really refreshing to see that we were actually meant to feel uncomfortable. If we were to switch the genders, people would have recognized immediately that this was wrong.

I appreciated it, but I feel it's still not taken seriously enough. She says it like she almost drunk dialed an ex or something, like lady, you almost had relations with a *child*! And one with stunted emotional growth from abuse, which is very obvious, too.

Like yes obviously she was about to do something really uncomfortable and shouldn't have, but can we stop pretending everyone is five until they turn eighteen? I don't see how pretending age works in a way that it demonstrably does not work and never has worked and never will work is a good thing, and I have never seen any evidence that the only way to take this kind of thing more seriously is to infantilize people who are legal adults in some countries and who generally are capable of driving, working, and in some cases living a fully independent life. Like please. Please can we just once address societal issues while still engaging with reality even a little bit.

On the subject of snakes vs ghosts. Lots of people, maybe even most people don't believe in ghosts. On the other hand we are practically evolutionarily primed to be afraid of snakes. Judging by how a fair number of primate species have specific warning calls for snakes, we've been afraid of them since before we had the words to express it.

Yep. What I found strange though was when the spider devil was introduced, it seemed to pale in comparison despite spiders and snakes being such prolific phobias. Especially when in the case of reptiles, snakes have become reasonably popular alternative pets.

To be fair when comparing the fear of snakes and ghosts it makes sense that a snake is more feared. Ask 10 people if they are afraid of snakes, many would say yes but now ask the same with ghosts and it will definitely be less (many people dont believe in ghosts i would imagine)

@@erenyeager6210 We actually don't know anything about Kobeni's devil or deal. The only thing we have is the action sequences we see AND that in the manga she is still around even after a lot of hardships and seemingly more powerful characters are dead. This could hint that her devil is actually very powerful or at least very very useful. Remember, Kobeni was a normal girl who didn't have a choice but to become a devil hunter but she still got super human capabilities for some reason.

snakes are just a primal fear that's in human dna. Our eyes have evolved to detect snakes better because of how much of a threat to our survival snakes were. And fear of ghosts is usually more a fear of other things like the dark or death

19:21 the translation from the ghost devil is weird here. I dunno why it said "awful girl, I don't like her", when in the japanese version she said "no, that girl is dreadful". The dub's version makes it sound like the ghost devil is being a diva when in reality it was scared.

I didn't get that impression when I saw it. And I saw it in both languages. Basically expressing that the girl was bad news and I guess it vibes with the ghost devil's apprehension because it was also intimidated. It's negative feelings either way. If you're thinking about it being more impactful, that's one thing but I'm not sure about that. I think the delivery made it clear.

This is such a good episode but I am excited for you to watch (aka. publish) the next one which is my favourite of this anime. I hope you had fun with it too. 😊 Also regarding the 'opinions' comment: I think people are looking for some expertise. Montana is particularly educated in psychology so it's nice to hear her insight on the feelings and characterisation in the shows. Kenny has expertise in theatre and voice acting so it's nice when he can comment on the acting cast as well as the delivery. But I am looking forward to whatever you have to say because after all, it's supposed to be something that you both enjoy doing.

In the first episode, it is implied that the zombie devil formed a pack with the yakuza leader because the latter 'wanted to upgrade'. If I am not mistaken, this was intentional and not a misunderstanding.

The countdown seemed to imply that Aki needs to hit his foe three times (probably losing several years with each hit)... and then the Curse Devil kills said foe dead, no saving throw, no damage limit, just dead dead. Shame that the katana guy seems to be able to recover from even _that._

The count down was the number of stabbings necessary to activate the Devil's ability. It kills the target(the ribcage thing you saw) in exchange for the user's lifespan. It just so happens that the target was a being niether human nor devil that is basically immortal(LIKE SOME OTHER GUY WE KNOW)

The nail form of the Curse Devil is based on Ushi no toki mairi. It's a way cursing your enemies in Japan by nailing a straw effigy of your target to a sacred tree of a Shinto Shrine. It must be repeated for seven days to work and if someone sees you doing this the curse rebounds on the user. If you see any anime character wearing a crown of candles holding a nail, hammer, and/or straw doll that's the Deal. All Devils are feared and IRL 15% of Japanese people say they have encountered supernatural, so in a world of Actual Devils a lot of people would fear being cursed.

The fear of snakes is FAR more engrained into the human mind than the fear of ghosts. The fear of snakes is literally a fear born from our evolution as a species . The fear of ghosts is a fairly recent concept/construct.

As beyond messed up everything is, I think it kinda highlights the devil hunter lifestyle. Everything revolves around them having little to no sanity and "making the most of life" while they can, since they'll probably die extremely young.

Fujimoto's use of writing characters that have weird/unacceptable behavior because well... people can be weird, is so underrated. In most anime especially the older ones the subject matter would be handled in a slapstick manner like mineta from mha but his tone of writing flawed people is what I appreciate the most from his works.

I'm willing to bet there's something about impaling dolls with nails to put curses on people in japanese folklore because there's multiple references to this kinda act in anime and games (the move "curse" in pokemon, nobara's curse technique, and other's i'm blanking on). idk tho i've never actually looked into it.

17:00 - Katana just means sword, so Katana devil would probably be the same as the sword devil... It's just like how Gladius nowadays we use for the Roman shortsword, but in Roman, it just meant sword, so every sword is a gladius if you're Roman.

In a world with Devils, people would not fear Ghosts that much. If something unexplained happens, devils are blamed, not ghosts. Ghosts are just folklore at this point, a bit scary but not much. Denji's heart is literally Pochita though, so his heart is 0% human.

Lest you forget, Himeno faces and has faced death pretty much every day for most of her life, which is likely why she's so willing to give into her vices, since literally any time she does could be her last chance to do so... It's really sad when you think about it.

the curse sword is very simple: you must stab 3 times to curse a target. the 3-2-1 is simply the devil counting down to the trigger.

I think it's more like the yakuza leader's grandson wanted revenge, so he made a deal with the snake girl : she gives him power to get his revenge and he gets her denji's heart in exchange... Remember that Pochita gave denji its heart when they.. ehm.. merged (?), so everyone seems to be after the chainsaw devil's heart (not denji's in particular).. we've seen the infinity devil trying to get his heart too, so for whatever reason, Pochita's got a beef with the devils

In a lot of ways, Chainsaw man is an anti-Shonen. It takes so many of the core elements of shonen: The wish fulfillment, the power scaling, the 'goodboy hero', and flips them over.

One thing I didn’t understand/Iike about himeno’s devil it’s the ghost devil (which power could not touch in episode 5), but somehow was getting sliced up and basically eaten by a snake?!?! How does that make sense? If there’s a reason or explanation to it, explain below. Also, please no spoilers cause I’m an anime only!!!

They mostly watch anime in dub. Of course, it's a personal preference, but as a sub-fan I do admit that I was surprised how good the English voices are, especially Makima, Denji and Power. It's up to them to decide and if you are not a fan of their decision, just leave them be, please.

They have their reasons. Watching and reading subtitles is hard for them.

They've indicated auditory issues which makes it hard for them to follow it in subtitles. But it's important that they're able to enjoy the content so having it dubbed is a good way for them to enjoy it. So let it go, there's other KZfaqrs who have watched it subbed so you can watch that

As a manga reader the dub is better than the sub, you can feel the passion from denji’s va cause he’s a manga reader too
