@@nanacue Personally, I don't care about the whitewashing vs black washing argument but I also won't pretend that they're on the same level. Whitewashing is usually done with malice or with ill intentions, while "blackwashing" originated from wanting more representation. Whitewashing usually includes taking away characteristics of a character, while blackwashing just adds black features onto a character. I think if people represented darker skin in the media more accurately than blackwashing wouldn't have been a thing in the first place. This is not to say that some blackwashing isn't done with malice or that all whitewashing is ill intentioned, however there is a lot more nuance to this conversation rather than it being black and white. (This is not meant to be disrespectful in any way, I am hoping to have an engaging and honest conversation)

@@po8883 I fully agree with this but I also understand where the creators coming from, no matter the intent of black washing or white washing, you're taking the race of someone and just changing it, unless you're the original creator of the character (not "I made the design on gacha myself/I drew it", but the ORIGINAL creator.) Then why should you take someone that already has a canon race and change it? (For MLP I understand, because no ponies have canon races, therefore fans are given the idea they can HEADcanon their races.) People need to stop justifying black washing as representation... I understand people want more representation but if that's the case you should make a new character, otherwise it seems like you're discriminating against the race you're blackwashing. Which isn't right, no matter the race or person.

@@RADIO_RADIANX I think at the end of the day it's just perspective, like I said there is a lot of nuance to this situation. In the rare event that a creator comes out and says that they don't like their art modified, all that needs to be done is to apologize and never do it again. As a black person myself, I was so happy to see the characters I love look like me. When people make these edits, majority of the time they're not changing the character's race. They're usually Blasian, however if they're only making the character black then yes, I could understand the frustration and I definitely do not agree with doing that. "People need to stop justifying blackwashing as representation." Blackwashing originated BECAUSE black people wanted more representation, you cannot separate the two. "Make your own characters." There is a black samurai game coming out soon, this is an original character based on an actual person. The day his trailer came out, I literally could not go on social media that whole day, people were harassing artists for drawing him, people spam disliked the trailer, and even posts defending him were spam reported and quickly deleted. You cannot say "Make your own characters" because the moment we do something like this happens.
