Watanabe is the most naturally gifted player on the women’s tour at moment, an impeccable backhand swing and fluid movement. Very satisfying to watch as it seems effortless. Has a strong high backhand kill from a very efficient swing too (like Ashour).

Any ideas as to why Watanabe would try to catch the ball?

She was trying to concede the point as she hit it right back to herself and thought it would be a stroke anyway. So her way of stropping the play to concede the point.

Bad luck sir. The key is to stay patient and committed and ignore all the ignorant detractors who choose to label your efforts a stupid waste of time, or just a pitiful attempt to gain some kind of relevance or importance. I think she just knew it was a stroke and thought Gilis wouldn't swing, so I wouldn't say stupid, it's just an unfortunate accident. No need to use harsh language against Watanabe.

She just wanted to end the rally because she thought it was a stroke. It was just unfortunate Tinne decided to play the ball.

How is that not a stupid action? You can never tell whether your opponent will play the ball

One could easily argue that Gilis is actually the one to blame as it was a clear stroke even if Watanabe didn't try to catch the ball so there was absolutely no need to swing at all. I'd say it was just a freak accident and the ref called it correctly as a contributed injury.

Arm broke from a 150gram squash racket, your kidding lol. El tayab broke the same racket by hitting it full force on her calf not that long ago.
