That's Why Buses Don't Have Seatbelts

Fastening your seatbelt while in a car is something you learn even without knowing the rest of the road traffic regulations. But have you ever wondered why buses don’t have seatbelts at all? It seems only natural that a vehicle that carries so much more people than a car should have seatbelts, but buses have none - not even school buses. And how can they be safer than cars then?
Speaking about safety, have you ever thought why buses stop and open their doors at railroad tracks? It’s actually a must for any vehicle to stop at a designated point before railroad tracks and check if there’s a train coming. For a bus driver, it’s also important to open the doors. But why? Well, let’s find out the answers to these questions and more!

SUMMARY:
- In case of emergency, passengers need to get off a bus as fast as possible. With seatbelts on, they’ll waste precious time on unbuckling them.
- Like any other public transport, buses have a schedule to meet, and in big cities, traffic jams aren’t rare. So to reduce delays caused by heavy traffic, dedicated bus lanes were introduced.
- When a bus has already closed its doors and moved a few feet away from the stop, halting it again creates difficulties for the rest of the vehicles on the road.
- There’s a mechanism that opens and closes the driver’s door from the outside. The button that activates it is usually hidden and located under the door.
- Buses are heavy, and it takes a really serious impact to stop them in their tracks. They’re also long, so even if a bus crashes into a brick wall, passengers will fall, but no one will probably get seriously hurt.
- Public transport depots need a lot of land, and land in big cities is costly. So when a transport company buys a turf to park its vehicles, it normally chooses a piece of land that’s relatively cheap.
- When a bus approaches its next stop, the GPS sends a signal to the display, and it changes the name of the stop.
- The steering wheel is connected directly to the wheels of the vehicle with a rod. In a car, the front wheels are further ahead of the driver, so the rod goes smoothly back and up to the steering wheel.
- Aerodynamics allows vehicles to move faster with less opposing force of the air. It’s fine with transport that’s made to be fast, but buses aren’t about speed; they’re more about safety.

Very rarely do you hear of passengers dying or seriously injured in a city transit bus crash. City transit buses stop every other block so they travel maybe 25 mph on average. That's why they are safe.

In Spain they DO have seat belts, and it's mandatory to use them. You can be fined if you don't, and you'll probably have trouble getting paid by the insurance company if you are unlucky enough for the bus to have an accident while you're not wearing your seat belt.

in the U.K. the buses have big buttons on the side of buses beside the doors that open and close doors that are supposed to be used in emergency's only but bus drivers use them to get in and out and there are also some on the ceiling on the inside for the same purpose. Also over here some bus companies have small buses/minibuses for not very busy routes and they have seatbelts on but thats really it. BTW great video as always.

School buses nowadays all seem to have seatbelts. But when I was a kid, none of them did. The school buses had signs on the side that would say things like "Seats 60, Stands 10" meaning that they designed their school bus routes with the idea that 60 kids would get seats and 10 would have to stand. So what's the point of having seat belts when not every kid is even going to get a seat?

The British buses in the 1950s and '60s did not have power steering, meaning one had to rock the bus back and forth in order the turn the wheels. The destination blinds were also adjusted by a hand crank. I volunteer in a bus museum.

I also thought not having seat belts was mainly monetary and safety. 1) including seat belts cost more in materials, labor installation, and upkeep. So don't include them and save on those variable costs 2) people are all sorts of different sizes. During school, 3 elementary kids could squeeze into one seat in desperation, but 2 was common and could hold backpacks and such. By high school, two were very crowded and you would need to put your stuff on the floor if you wanted seat room. Worse if you had 'chubby' people sitting beside you. So the belts would have to fit over small children and almost grown teenagers and adults. Make it for both won't be too bad, but if belts have to be designated for one group, then that limits the usage utility for other groups. Seat belts would end up setting a set space for someone, like an airplane set. And similar to that, you'll have people rolling onto the other's space and you can't move that much to adjust. Plus, you have a heavy buckle or long strap that can be used against someone. The straps could get stuck and locked like in a regular car, so someone could be too tightly strapped in. You would also have to adjust for those different sizes, creating a lot of wear and tear on the material.

Your somewhat right and wrong. Buses do have seatbelts but it depends what kind of bus and what safety measures are put in place and how long the passengers are riding in the bus for. Public transportation buses don't have seatbelts whereas a coach buses are slightly larger and requires an seatbelt for long distant travel. Sorry for my bad English and grammar. :)

Some of the newer school buses do have seat belts. The only times I rode on a school bus with seatbelts was when I took my first or second graders on a field trip. There are two seat belts on each seat, but this presented a problem because we had our students sit three to a seat because they were small enough to fit and that way we didn’t have to use so many buses. I didn’t want two students buckled into one seatbelt. That didn’t seem safe to me. So I just told them to sit properly so that the padding of the seats would protect them and not to use the seat belts.

It’sme Yourlonglostfriend I am a bus driver in Scotland! Not all busses have seatbelts, it depends on the manufacture, company policy’s, and type of bus. Regular Volvo city busses usually never have seatbelts, not even the drivers seat. However some busses for longer journeys, or coach style duty busses, such as wrightbus streetlights, tend to have them for faster roads.

Also dude, there's so much panic in trying to make sure that you'll actually be able to get off the bus in the small amount of time that it'll actually remain at the stop. Could you imagine if you had to wait for the bus to completely stop before taking off your seatbelt when you're in the back row at the top deck of a double decker when bus is already crowded? You might as well just sit back and relax and acknowledge that you won't get off until the last stop on the other side of the city.

The only damage was the license plate on the bus. and the car had a big dent in the back. No one was hurt because our driver slammed on the breaks. Yeah I can't see why a fast moving Bus and suddenly crashing won't hurt anyone, I travel by Buses almost daily, there are some inexperienced drivers who often make hard stops and that's already uncomfortable, I have experienced little harder stops when something gets in front of a Bus, and all the passengers moved forward really hard and panicked, those who stand would almost fall or crash into seats, and that's not even a crash, I can't imagine what would happen if the Bus gets crashed at high speed, people would fly, those sitting facing each other would crash into each other, those would freespace in front of them would fly out of their seats.

Right, some background here: I’m in the UK. I am a bus driver. I have a lot of knowledge and experience with busses. Bus lanes are everywhere in the UK, to the point where sometimes I drive in them in my car, I get about 10 tickets/fines for this a year. Because I’m so used to driving in them all the time for a living. To clear up comments, some busses do, and some busses do not have seatbelts. Depends on how old the bus is, on that country’s laws, on the bus company’s policies, and most importantly the bus type and manufacturer. The old Volvo busses never have seatbelts, but the newer wrightbus busses usually do. And the type of bus, city busses are constantly stopping, people getting on and off just waste time on seatbelts. However coaches are designed for longer journeys, and higher speeds, so they usually do have seatbelts. In the uk, if a bus has seatbelts, it is required by law to wear them. If you have any questions about busses and things they do, please reply and I’ll try help, clear up a lot of confusion about busses.

In the uk 4:46 we they're called level crossings, at a level crossing barriers come down with a continuous bell sounding alarm with flashing signal lights to let you know a train is coming, this can take several minutes before the alarm stops & the barriers lift up. This is to stop people running the risk of being on the tracks when the train is fast approaching but it still doesn't stop impatient people from trying to beat the barriers before coming down or jumping over them - most cases people narrowly avoid getting hit by an oncoming train but a few people have died because they were just too impatient
