I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet but I can see a remake set in 1997 where the One-ders are a ska band (the punny name is already there!) and the hero he's super pumped to meet is Aaron Barrett. Movie ends when ska's not popular anymore.

This movie doesn't get anywhere near the credit it deserves. I think musicians appreciate the movie the most. It has the cliche lifecycle of the band: start off in a garage, play some terrible shows, get noticed, get signed, get famous, start fighting, break up, a few individuals make it big again on their own. The soundtrack is also incredible. Find me another movie that has a movie soundtrack that mimics a regular album of original tunes. The icing is the detail they put into the actual charecters when they were performing. Using period correct instruments, playing the instruments in a totally believable way, playing instruments that actually match the sounds on the track. Great story line, good tunes, no profanity, no violence, no sex scenes...a movie that just stands on its own.

My favorite musical in-joke is that the bass player played by Ethan Embry doesn't even have a name. He's shows up in the credits as "T.B. Player".
