Learn how to make a fascia for your layout in episode five of Model Railway Basics.
It's time for another episode of Model Railway Basics and this one is all about making a fascia. This isn't strictly necessary when building a layout but it does give the edge of your baseboard a much neater finish and also protects your scenery too.
When I was first starting out with my layout I didn't really know how to go about making a fascia and I couldn't find any good tutorials online so that's why I decided to include it in this series. It's very much a techniques I've figured out myself but it's simple and easy enough that complete beginners can follow along.

Absolutely, and once you've added the scenery it's hard to go back and add a fascia later on... not impossible but certainly easier to do it at this stage I find. Thanks for watching 😃

Great video and I'm definitely doing this mine! Its actually wise to do this to prevent the land being hit by something whatever the case may be. And one of the reasons I had pondered the idea was if you had a derailment to keep the rolling stock from falling off the layout. Thanks again for sharing your videos.

Awesome, yeah it definitely protects the scenery from getting damaged and you could use to it stop rolling stock falling off the layout too! All you need to do is cut the board a little bit higher to create a lip and that should do the trick. Thanks for watching 😃

Plaster bandage application. Place it dry where you want it to go and used a damp - not dripping brush of water. Brush lightly over the bandage and it will soften moulding itself to the desired shape. repeat after a few minutes and the plaster can fill the holes in the bandage and smooth to other surfaces. One bandage layer is pretty hard add extra layers for increased strength.

plaster bandage is quiet expensive i use kitchen jay cloths soaked in very runny cheap filler works just as well and half the price any way keep it up great stuff look forward to the next video

That’s a great alternative David, I’ve also heard people use pva with jay cloths too. I’ve found if you shop around though you can get plaster bandage for quite cheap. I got an unbranded pack of ten rolls for £11 last year which has kept me going strong for several months now. Thanks for watching 😃

Maybe a silly question but when you make your sidings for the baseboard... do they have to be made in a way that the large flat piece stands up off the table surface/ hollow underneath?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question at all. I would say with model railways there’s no one singular way to do anything. This is the way I do it but if you want to adapt it or try out something different then you’re more than welcome to. Thanks for watching 😃

I suppose foam board could be used in place of hardboard & paper mache in place of modeling compound ? just a thought.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffrey, it depends on why you're adding a fascia. For me foamboard would be too delicate and the intention of the fascia is to protect the side profile of the scenery from getting knocked and damaged. That said, my layout is portable so is more susceptible to getting knocked. Paper mâché is a good/cheaper alternative to mod-roc but the compound allows you to build up to the fascia in lumps that you can smooth out and I think that would be very tricky to achieve with paper mâché. That said if you do manage it I'd definitely be interested to hear how you do it. Thanks for watching 😃

I have access to plenty of cardboard and boxes so I took a box home made a tunnel out of it Cardboard you can also use cardboard to paint scienary on and attach to a spot where it is tight for scenery
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Cool, yeah cardboard is very handy for all different areas of building a model railway. And the best thing is it's often free too! Thanks for watching 😃

Could you use polystyrene to just have some rocks?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, there's no right or wrong way to build a model railway. These videos are one way of doing it but coming up with your own methods is certainly to be encouraged as well. For creating rocks out of polystyrene I would use a wire brush of some sort to create the fault lines you would see on cliff faces. Thanks for watching 😃

HRH Duke of Edinburgh would probably have asked.."Facias? ...Well, that's all very well but you haven't yet perfected your Facials yet, have you?
