A review of the long awaited Hattons Genesis 4&6 wheel coaches in the LB&SCR Umber Livery!
Bonus Content: / @thatmodelrailwayguy
MERCH: shop.thatmodel...
We've been waiting a while but finally the Hattons Genesis 4&6 wheel coaches have started to arrive and I've got several of them on pre-order. The first to arrive for me were the LB&SCR Umber livery versions with working LED lights and I have to say I'm very impressed with them.
Since Hattons announced their Genesis coach range, Hornby have also announced and released their own 4&6 wheel coaches so it'll be interesting to see how they stack up against each other in the future.

Nice video For info the first class coaches have different coloured seats to represent smoking and non smoking. The real coaches used a form of easier to clean leather in the smoking compartment, but often used a coloured cloth in the non-smoking compartment.

Thanks, yeah a few people had mentioned that with the seat colours already but always good to have it from multiple sources. Thanks for watching 😃

Nice review, I have the four pack of LBSC coaches and I'm also very pleased with them. The spare set of running boards are so you can swap to just having single standard platform height steps instead of having the double ones for low level platforms. The blue seats are for non smoking 1st compartments, dark brown for 1st smokers and lighter brown for 3rd.class.

Ah good to know about the steps, that makes sense! And also about the seat colours in the First Class compartment too - must be all the tar residue in the smoke that turned the seats brown 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

Lovely detail on those coaches. Very much like the way the lights reflect off the inside of the tunnel.

Reminds me on Annie and Clarabel - I have a 1970s LBSC 0-6-0 and these would go well with it! I'm a bit upset on your behalf - ironically the wagon with more wheels lights keep going off!

Absolutely, Im almost tempted to do a realistic Thomas themed layout 😉 Yes I do need to have another look at that carriage, though like I said originally the lights didn't come on at all. Thanks for watching 👍
@treinenliefde

I suspect the reason the middle coach's lights often flicker is because the 6 wheeled chassis isn't well designed, you can see it bounce and wobble more than the 4 wheeled ones, add to that the what appears to be useless capacitor and you get those flickering lights. One thing I have thought about is how doable it would be to use couplings with electronic contacts and a DCC chip in one carriage (maybe place a larger capacitor in one carriage that sends power to the others) like the Bachmann Pullman and how mainland European manufacturers do it. That could save quite some money spent on DCC fitting them and would help with any issues with the lights. Although for me I'm waiting for some pre grouping bogie coaches, need two or three for my future layout based in ex-GER territory.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

It does seem to pivot around the centre axle a bit which is what is most likely causing the flickering. The centre axle is removable though so I may have a go at removing it and see if that makes a difference. With regards to using the couplings to pass the power through to each coach - I imagine it's possible but would probably require at lot of work and major modifications made to the coach. In all honesty it would probably be easier to build a kit in that instance. Thanks for watching 😃

Very nice little coaches! Some may also buy them to customize them in their own liveries :)
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Yes they may well, although with the quality of the printing already on these and the wide range of liveries Hattons have announced I think a lot of people may be happy to keep them as they are. Perhaps in the future though some lined versions would be good but without the company crests/numbering so that they could be used for fictional/light railways as well. Thanks for watching 😃

These are great. Ironically, the Victory Works Terrier pack comes with similar 4-wheel Stroudley coaches. The Hattons look great as well, and compare favorably, lining and lettering are crisp, nice detailing, too. If I was worried about greening, I might pop out the "glass" and spray them with a shot of clear semi-gloss or the like. I wonder if an ounce or two of weight would help the 6-wheeler to track better. Overall, they seem fine, and are just right in a pre-grouping or preservation setting. They look great with your Terrier.

Yes it'll definitely be interesting to see how these stack up against the Hornby ones in a comparison. The difficulty with adding weight to the 6 wheeler is where to put it. Inside the compartments would be my only thought but it would be very visible and there's also what seems to be a large weight under the floor already. I'll be removing the centre wheel set at some point too so it'll be interesting to see if that makes any difference. Thanks for watching 😃

I know they certainly have a Batch 2 and 3 in the works but those are all different liveries. It's unclear at the moment if they'll do re-runs of the ones they've already made. Thanks for watching 😃

I can see why the 3 wheel coaches light turn off. At 14:22 you can see that when going over uneven track the centre wheel is causing the rear wheels to ride up and therefore loosing connection with the track. My suggestion would be to get a larger capacitor or to remove the centre wheels.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
The whole coach seems to pivot around that centre axle, even on level track it rocks back and forth a bit. It'll be interesting to see if the other 6 wheel coaches I have on order are similar. Thanks for watching 😃

They're certainly not far off although I think in the Railway Series books they're were always bogie coaches. But if Thomas is supposed to be an LB&SCR E2 then these would certainly fit in. Thanks for watching 😃
@treinenliefde
@treinenliefde Жыл бұрын
Yes they were bogie coaches in the books indeed, drawn as LBSC bogie coaches, which are basically just extended four wheelers put on bogies. And then in the television series they were LBSC four wheelers like in this video.

Hello I do believe the component you describe in your video as a capacitor is most likely to be a resister instead, I would imagine the LED’s themselves are most likely to be perhaps 3 volts so the resisters have been added to reduce the voltage. Some of my coaches flicker too however I don’t think this detracts from just how beautiful these coaches are up close. I too have purchased a rake of both LB&SC and GWR versions. Having received these myself I now wish I had also ordered a rake of SR coaches too, however it’s now too late since these are no longer available (sold out on pre-order) I really do hope Hattons do a re-run because so many of us have now missed out. Nice video, thank you for posting!
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Blimey! If it is a resistor it's a pretty big one in comparison to the ones I usually use. As far as further runs go, I think Hattons are more likely to focus on the Batch 2 and 3 liveries initially. But given how popular all the liveries have been it's not out of the question that they'll do more. I'm surprised how many people have missed out though given how long ago these were announced. Thanks for watching 😃

At 8:15 you can clearly see that it is a capacitor, a 100uF 35V so it should be working a little better than it is. it is probaly faulty...look for a swollen end plate where the cross is at the opposite end to the connectors. It should be an easy fix if it is blown. I really want to get a set or two of the LNWR livery coaches, but no rush as I am still building the layout and need the money for more points! 😁

That was a good honest review, they are very nice coaches with lots of detail on them, with the lights I think I prefer hornbys idea with the magnet and switch, much more reliable but doing a comparison video is a really good idea 😀

Yes they do have a lot of great points but I think I agree with you in regards to the lighting. The Hornby coaches obviously work on DC and DCC equally since you don't need a decoder in every coach to control them. Thanks for watching 😃

These look great working with a wee tank engine (I have two of the LNER 6-wheel versions), but I have found they have a tendancy to derail on points, possibly due to the small wheel flanges.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy 7 ай бұрын
I've found the 6 wheel versions have a tendency to rock on their centre axle and cause derailments if points aren't perfectly level. It may be worth removing the centre axle (even if just temporarily) to see if that makes any difference. Thanks for watching 😃

Good review again, it will be interesting to see if the gold paint/ink used will react, it's a pain and I have noticed on some transfers that use gold paint (screen printing) that they start going green after some months which is why sometimes companies will use a yellow. Gel inks don't seem to react I have a few LBSC kits done some 5 years ago and those are ok.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Interesting, I have to admit I've never had a problem with gold turning to green on any of my RTR models. It certainly wasn't an issue with my Hattons P Class which has some gold in the livery so you'd hope it would be a similar situation. Time will tell I guess. Thanks for watching 😃

I believe the center wheels are removable (on the 6 wheeler) removing them should improve contact over uneven track. Also (I believe) that is why the extra footboard is provided.

Interesting review. I am waiting for my SR and LNER ones, and I hope that Hattons will reissue the LMS and GWR variants that had been looted away in preorders... For branchlines and small layouts, it's a must-have, and something that was really missing, save the 4 wheel coaches in the Hornby Railroad range, blatantly outdated and overpriced today.

They are certainly very nice, I’ve got a few more of these on order too in different liveries so it’ll be interesting to see how those turn out. I know Hornby released a similar range of 4 & 6 wheeled coaches a year or so ago but these Genesis coaches do seem to be more highly detailed. Thanks for watching 😃

Hi Joe. I ordered 2 of each LBSCR, GWR and Southern with lights. I had previously bought 2 of the Hornby LBSCR ones in which I was disappointed with the light bleed. I am delighted with my Hattons ones and wish I had bought three of each livery. I hesitated because I wasnt sure what we would get and OFC they are sold out now. I haven't removed the roof of any as they seemed tight to say the least and I didn't want to damage them. I'll take some brave pills and try again. I wonder if the capacitor is only activated in the circuit if you plug in a chip. Just a thought.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you're happy with the Genesis coaches! With getting the roof off I found it was best to start at a corner and then work your way down the sides. I agree though, it's not very user friendly. Interesting thought with the capacitor too - it's possible but a bit of an odd choice and doesn't help those on analog much. Thanks for watching 😃

Don't know if you've seen but Rails Of Sheffield have taken on the Batch 2 models so those will definitely still be made. After that it seems the tooling will continue to have a life elsewhere (though it's not been made public exactly where yet) so they won't disappear for good, they probably just won't be branded "Hattons Originals" anymore. Thanks for watching 😃
