I would not interpret what Nate said as you being a failure. But as a reminder that your channel needs a bit of work (just like mine 🙃). Your channel is not doing very well YET. But you are consistent with coming up with ideas for your channel and are also consistent with posting. The sound, editing and the image quality are good. Once you figure out who you want to speak to and once you become more relaxed in front of the camera, then you'll be able to tailor the video ideas to your target audience. Keep it up!

I can absolutely confirm Nate's advice about choosing your audience. He roasted my channel earlier this year and his suggestion that I focus on 'People with a knowledge of, or interest in, chemistry' changed everything. I went from about 1000 subscribers to about 25,000 and climbing within months.

Just watched 10mins on evaporation and you're doing great stuff here :) I think there's a real conflict between being informative versus entertaining. It's not enough to just drop a bunch of knowledge into a video, but equally at what point is pursuing style going to undermine the pursuit of substance. Great to see an example where that balance is succeeding.

Awesome video Nick! 😂 The personality section really resonated with me…I use full scripts for my video since they help keep me concise and on-track, but I always end up sounding a bit forced and unnatural. Something I’ve found as a viewer is that a lot of times, the most creators I enjoy watching the most don’t just have a fun personality, they also have a unique editing style that complements their personality. I’d like to start transitioning off of scripts at some point so I hopefully start developing my on camera personality and find what works for me (funny enough, one of my best-performing videos didn’t use any kind of script, I just told a story based on something I was already familiar with). PS. I love the brighter look!

That was very thoughtful and thorough. The videos I saw on your screen for Paul's channel that really worked message-wise are: How I Handle Late Employees, This Mistake Kills Restaurants and your highlighted Why I Would Never Own a Chick-Fil-A. So it's clear Paul's audience is (or should be) restaurant managers and potentially owners. Those also have relatively more views. But all of your critiques were right on point, including the personality observation -- coming across as 'professional' (aka putting on the 'manager persona') instead of coming across as real and genuine. Things to keep in mind for the future, absolutely.

Every video of yours strips off a preconceived notion I have about how I think KZfaq works and lets me know how it actually works…whether I like how it works or not. Watched this through a second time because of all the nuggets in here (no matter where you are on the journey!). There is no shortage of skills to work on, and from this video, I realize I need to position myself more prominently across my packaging, e.g., thumbnails. At this juncture, thumbnails have been on the back burner as I focus on putting out quality ideas. From previous videos of yours, my priorities this quarter have been to express myself larger than my audience betrays-speak like I have the 10K, 20K audience-and to constantly affirm my belief that my voice deserves to be heard here, that there is space on this platform to share my knowledge. What keeps me going is believing these things until they’re true, however delusional they may be. Thank you for beefing up our skillsets, Nate!

It's been interesting to read the comments to this video, which is a huge credit to the quality of audience you have grown. One thing you have managed to achieve in your format is a balance between content and delivery. You are enjoyable to listen to, but also worth listening to. On a personal level, for my journey, I think there's a real conflict between being informative versus entertaining. It's not enough to just drop a bunch of knowledge into a video, but equally at what point is pursuing style going to undermine the pursuit of substance. Not to mention the resources or ability to simply "do better and improve". Finding a sustainable path to producing videos is just as important as finding ways to make them better.

Struggled with this a lot at the beginning. One thing that is helping me a lot is: Whenever I will push the record button, I remember to be the "130% version of myself". Remember the time you were explaining something that you was really excited, to somebody. How did you spoke and gestured? What was the tone of your voice? That is your 130%! Keep posting and improving and, most important, having fun in the process!

I’ve been diving down the rabbit holes for KZfaq creation content recently and your advice is great. It’s broad enough to be applied to different categories, yet also details specifics that can applied to all categories, as well. For me, I nuked the process of having me on camera. I simply don’t have the confidence or acting skills yet 😅 but with only using my voice, I’m able to convey my points and personality so much better. Also requires less do-overs lol I’ll definitely keep checking these out!

After several years subscribed to Channel Makers and being here since the start of the Nate Black channel, I just wanted to say this is another great video Nate (not Nick) and to keep the content coming! Also, coincidence or not, "Mr. Wright" made me think of the protagonist of the Ace Attorney series whose name is Phoenix Wright...sometimes called "Mr. Wright" and ironically the character Maya used to call him "Nick." Now, this is probably the 5th one of your videos that I've watched and I just want to share some thoughts (which may or may not be relevant to you :) ) First of all , thank you! I've been through so many "grow your channel" videos during my first few weeks here on YT and I always end up feeling so defeated. Niche this and that, thumbnail so and so, title here and there. But I never understand more than what they're trying to teach - and their own knowledge seems soap cup deep. It always leaves me feeling discouraged and sad. "I'll never grow, I'm not special, I'm just doing my own thing and it won't ever be seen". And then "Nick" enters the chat and the way you've approached this topic, go deep under the surface and really explain things in a way that's uplifting, have completely altered my way of thinking about things. I understand a lot more from those 5 videos of yours than I have from 50 from other channels. I also feel like your tips and thoughts are very applicable to my channel! My first main goal is not to grow "fast as possible" - it's to understand what I bring, my target audience and to grow a stable, nice community. For what it's worth, your videos have uplifted me and sparked my curiosity to approach this entire YT journey with a different, more sustainable mindset. So thank you! My journey continues among your subscribed audience :)

Now I still do that but with a lot more effort as now I enjoy editing and try creating a story etc. But almost 3 years doing this I've learned a lot by myself or with help from you Nate and other channels like yours. So all in all despite being a very small channel I'm starting to really like the way my channel is going and maybe one day somebody will say "yes keep doing what you are doing" or "roast me like they mean it" 😂 Keep these videos coming they are all helpful even when I ain't the one being roasted.

The idea of “positioning” myself in my content is something I’ve never even thought of. Great information and video!

I randomly came across this channel but since I have a small (micro) channel I’m guessing it’s my algorithm. I generally never watch videos like this, but it really got me thinking so thanks. I really like the idea that you’re picking randoms to roast and not just doing like cross affiliations because that always just seems so biased I don’t feel I can trust what’s being said to believe it’s valid. Keep posting good contact.

I can’t imagine anyone not knowing your name, Nate! And that you’d roast someone who didn’t? That is so kind. I got monetized this fall and your insights from your (former) channel and paid program get all the credit. If you have time for Raul then I know you’ll love to hear this from your former student! I still struggle with my “expert” nutritionist channel, but my more autobiographic breast cancer one is doing ok. I don’t really want a roast, much as I’m curious what you think, but I’m so glad you’re still making these kinds of practical and funny videos for those of us who could never forget your name.

Thank you. This has really made me think about my content. I am an avid watcher of other channels, that do the same content as me. (Planning and Journaling) and the makers that I watch are giving me ideas or inspiring . Also they are entertaining and not taking themselves to seriously. I hope I do that!

Such an insightful video and the tips about positioning your channel is something so simple and yet so complex at the same time. You really are awesome at helping us creators succeed Nate! I did have a question for you about running two channels. I recently started a second channel as my niche is ASMR and hypnosis and I wanted to be able to make music and gaming/vtuber content on the side. I've been looking into tips and tricks for running two channels in different niches effectively but there seems to be mixed messages. What do you think about marketting your new channel to your old audience if the niche is vastly different?

Nate, that was a great video. First one I’ve ever seen from you. On the point about positioning for a single audience, I needed that advice for my own channel. I have been doing a lot of things, a lot of ideas that popped in my head will turn into video, and I’m still seeing what works. But after I find what works, it’s time to double down on that idea and let the real work of channel growth begin. I appreciate it.

This video was both informative and entertaining! I'm glad I watched another video where you explained the concept of "Position" in detail. If I had watched this video first, I would have been rather lost. If there was a card that popped up with a teaser like "What I mean by Position" I would have clicked on it. The setup for leaving me wanting to know more was perfect.

Very interesting to watch this! It’s always important to visit and re-visit the audience for your channel - and I’m pretty sure I need to do a better job on this myself. I’ll have to get a NATE-Roast one of these days - although, I might be a bit more Raul than Mr. Wright…. Does that make me… Mr. Wrong? I always learn from your channel (been around here awhile) - for some reason this one really resonated.

5:47 In the middle of the video. Had to pause. This video is great. I love that you are being very saucy/feisty/whatever the right word is with the names, I love how you are roasting Raul, choosing Raul and Mr Wright to compare each other with was a really great idea. Actually maybe it could have been any two channels, but the execution is really spot on. Ok let’s continue

Love it! I've been really trying to contemplate exactly who watches my videos.... Originally I figured it would be maybe like a 60/40 split male to female. And I I assumed they would be probably in their mid-to-late 20's... But after a couple of years I've realized from analytics that my audience is 97% males in their late 30's! It's got me already brainstorming how my content could shift to better satisfy that demographic 🤔 BTW - a few months before I started this channel, I did the channel makers course you created in 2021. Created an entire spreadsheet of 10-20 similar channels like what I wanted to create like you recommended. And then I launched in January 2022! It took off on tiktok instantly, which helped grow my YT audience to about 16k organically from people coming from tiktok. And finally in January 2023, the YT algo finally picked up my video! Now just to replicate that successful video... I also saw you at Vidsummit the last 2 years, but was always too nervous to come up and say hi. Thanks for the consistently great advice man!

Some great roasting here! The one thing I always struggle with is trying to work out who my audience is, and how best to serve them! My content is quite niche and often it's trying to work out so they want visuals or information

Love this video Nick! Errr I mean Nake... Bahh I mean NATE!!! lolll 🤣This is a very interesting topic with respect to positioning of a channel and having an audience that will connect. My question to add to the conversation is where would a line be in the sand of positioning that is either too broad or too narrow? For me and my channel, I'm an automotive channel centered around the C8 Corvette doing product reviews, how to videos, random drives, and most recently corvette related news. So its a bit of informative cool car products, a bit of "hey follow me on this cool drive", and some "hey did you hear this crazy corvette news!". I feel like my niche is narrow that I can be "broad" in the range of topics within but at the same time I wonder if my growth is on par or not for my channel size. I feel like its not and wonder if my positioning is not correct. Other similar veteran channels have 65k-85k worth of subscribers and cover sometimes even the same identical topics. One such example was a drag race comparison between a C8 base vs C8 Z06 and did this as a collaboration with another heavier sized channel that had 65k subscribers and their version of video has 250k of views while mine has only 3k. I don't think there is a drastic difference in video quality between the two but like I said, I wonder if its my positioning is not so great or i'm missing something critically basic. Feel free, anyone (including Nick/Nate 😋) to roast me and my channel as I'm always looking to grow my skill set and improve. I absolutely love doing this stuff and want to get better with each and every video! P.S. Nate thanks for reminding me I need to comment more as I've always enjoyed your videos even before you made this channel and look forward to every new one you post. Keep up the great work! Cheers all!

Hi Nate I found your roast of Paul’s channel really insightful especially about how it’s not clear who his videos are for. I find that with my channel (a fitness channel for ballet dancers) I am quite clear with who my audience is and plan my videos with them in mind however my newer videos aren’t reaching as many viewers as my older videos did. Perhaps there are other areas I need to improve in or perhaps I need to change things up as I find that my videos aren’t always reaching the audience they are intended for.

Hey Nate ! I absolutely love watching your videos as they are equally informative and entertaining. Your charisma and sense of humor are so captivating I sometimes think I would watch you even if your videos were all over the place, like Raul's🙃Watching quite a bit on channel growing advice and seeing very little on a fitness channel growth on KZfaq, I often wonder if there actually is an absolutely different strategy when it comes to fitness workouts. So curious what you think about it. Thanks!
