Porsche has announced the new 911 (992.2) will officially launch on May 28th. Ahead of the new 911's grand reveal (and the first road 911 to feature hybrid technology), I look back on the life and legacy of the outgoing current model, the 992.1. Featuring the values story, production problems, plus the styling and tech of the 992 all discussed, plus there's a look at what I'd like to see changed when the 992.2 launches.
How do you think history will judge the 992.1?

Once the world realizes the 992.1 was the last 911 you could get with a manual, and they're all hybrids, Id say it will be looked upon as the pinnacle.
@Bavariaria

My dealer thinks they WILL offer a manual 992.2, although not among the first few trims they release. There is some documentation suggesting that there will be a non-hybrid 3 liter turbo variant with a tiny bump in power vs the 992.1 base motor. But I agree, these cars will hold their value incredibly well. To me, 991 is the pinnacle of engineering/tech/performance in a 911, as it still feels the right size and has a rawness that the 992 lacks. But the 992 is an incredible piece of engineering and virtually faultless on paper.

Totally agree. I’m lucky enough to have had quite a few. From my first 996 tip through to g series targa, 997 s, 964’s, 993 Carreras and even a 993 turbo. I now have a manual 992 Carrera s. I have loved every minute of driving all of them. Cost and model range is irrelevant. It’s what suits your life and budget at the time. Enjoy the drive…..

As a car enthusiast, 911 has always been my dream car since childhood; There will always be better and faster 911s in the future; However, the 992.1 might be the last generation with pure internal combustion engine and the iconic central analog tachometer; As a result, I’m taking the allocation of 911T in July, tentatively to be delivered in September; regardless of the quote unquote base engine, it’s more than enough for me to enjoy on public roads, to actually “drive/ push” the car on mountain passes! I will try best to keep this 911T for tens of years; and then when the whole world becomes silent because of the EVs, I can fire up the flat 6, listen to the imperfect exhaust sound and take it for a spin!

Spot on as usual, Lee. It's nice hearing someone else with the insight and honesty, point out flaws such as the awful door handles, unsightly rear end design and more when the common practice for automotive journalists is to overlook these design choices and only praise the typical Porsche strengths. One add, we here in America do NOT like the new, bloated and oversized models any more than you in the U.K. The actual reason Porsche has had to make the newer 911s so enormous is actually because of all the new government requirements for emissions, safety and other equipment. The basic shape of a 911 leaves little room to add these things in, beside up over the engine. As these things get piled on, the height of the rear deck rises and that necessitates all the other areas being increased to maintain something that still resembles a traditional 911 shape. Another great video! Cheers.

The 992.1 will become a hugely desired car in the future. It’s likely to be the last purely petrol 911 generally. Weight will come with the hybrid models as will complexity and battery issues in the long term. The 992.1 will become as desirable as a 964 & 993 !! Watch this space.

I seriously doubt it will be as desirable. They made about 130.000 964's and 993's COMBINED. And very large part of them are cabrios. Of course we don't know the final production numbers of 992 yet as it's still going for years to come, but they made 233,540 units of 991 ALONE. Those numbers already tell that these new models will never be as desirable as 964 and 993.

For the last 12 months, I was dead set on a 992 Carrera T with Aero Kit (otherwise a pretty stripped down spec). When it came time to pull the trigger, I sat in one for an hour at my dealership. My gut just didn’t feel right. I was overwhelmed by how posh and done-up the cabin had become, as well as its size. Porsche has truly perfected the do-everything sports car with the 992, but it just doesn’t feel like the 911s I have owned or grown to love so much over the years. I then sat in a Cayman GTS 4.0 and it felt perfect to me. From the driver’s seat, it felt the same size as my outgoing 996 Turbo. The driver inputs and interfaces are so simple, and the cabin’s comparative lack of polish was a big plus for me. Just a simple, old fashioned, small, RWD, naturally aspirated, manual sports car with a limited slip diff. I went with the Cayman, which I never in a million years would have guessed for myself. That said, the 992 is epic and I totally understand why so many people love them. It’s truly been perfected in terms of capability and refinement.

There is some truth to this - however the loss of NA in the Carrera line-up was a hammer blow even tho the blown 3L is a great engine. Lots of soul less german turbos out there, take your pick. I suspect a lot of Porsche owners have moved to other marques or rather have one or two "key" Porsche e.g. GT3 RS and now also own Mclaren and Ferrari. Retention of core customers is a big deal for higher end manufacturers. I suspect they lost a lot of custom from core buyers over the 992. Perhaps they gained a new customer base that can buy multiple new Porsche PA.

As a current owner of both a 991.1 C4 BE PDK with every sport option and a 992.1 GT3K with every lightweight option: I would make the following observations. 1) The 991 feels a much smaller car. 2) The touch screen in the 992 causes delays in changing settings whilst the 991 settings can be changed more rapidly. 3) The door handles in the 992 are horrid. 4) The dash of the 991 is just about "the same" as my first 911, a 2.4E whilst the 992 dash has more in common with my iPhone 16 Super Max Pro Elite. 5) On narrow winding British country roads I can drive the 991 quicker, apex to apex, than my 992 with 150 BHP more, due to is feel of narrow width and PDK gearbox.

I have an other opinion about the Design of the 992. For me the interior of the 992 went back to the earlier eras of the 911. It's horizontal designed and very similiar to the Design of the aircooled ones. Witch were one of the greatest cockpit designs ever made. Also the back of the 991 ist a little boring and unstructured. I Like the Front of the 992. Because of the shape of the hood and the frontline, which goes back to 993 shape. I agree with you, that a smaller Body wasn't offered. I drive a 964 targa, a 996 Turbo and I see a lot of reminiscence to them in my 992 c4. Thanks fir another great review.

The 992 is an iconic evolution of the 911 and it certainly has its strengths. For me, however, it is too "obese", less elegant and vaguely reminiscent of the Panamera only as a two-seater. In addition, the sound suffered greatly in Europe due to the OPF. Digitality is contemporary but also currently. soulless. I favor the 991.2. In my opinion the peak of the 911.

The 992 is a fantastic car. I'm in love with mine. It’s not really fair to compare it against other generations of 911. You have to compare it to what else is available today. And there is nothing more gratifying to drive out there. As a bonus, for the first time since the 964 the 911 finally has an interior that’s not hideous. It also retains the magic rear engine handling characteristics, but just smoothed out in a modern way. Steering is a little bit over filtered for me but it still gives me the exact information I need to slide the car comfortably. The handling balance is amazing although the grip level is a bit too high for my taste. It's also not suited for UK roads from what I keep hearing because of its size. But the UK is not suited for cars or car reviews so every opinion from this island should be taken with a grain of salt

I think the exterior design of this car really shines in its most aggressive looking editions. I've seen the homoligated GT3s on the Ring and those looked absolutely stunning, especially with the LED backlight. Just futuristic madness. The BMW M4 has the same thing, on the street the grille looks so out of place (mostly because of the license plate), but on track with all the extra aero and downforce elements it looks so aggressive and mean. On the street it's indeed a bit too much of a comfortable looking car in its stance and mostly shines as Targa in my opinion. It really looks clunky next to older generations though

Very very good summary Lee. For history sake, being a air-cooled guy for many years, I hated when Porsche went water. Now I have owned 4, and love them, but still the 993Turbo and 993C2S were the best ever regular 911s, IMO (not counting 73RS, GT2s, etc). Now we are at the end of petrol (water cooled) engines, things will change and not for the better, just the end of an era and we all have to go with it. The best water 911 is the 991.2, as you stated, looks, performance, cabin, etc. I enjoy my 992GT3, but it's not a keeper.....sadly.

And though I appreciate earlier 911s, I think they’re irrelevant except to use as style guides and lineage trackers. As far as the digital elements… it’s 2024. Nothing wrong with hi-res maps, CarPlay, etc. I just did a 12-hour drive in the car and those distractions were quite welcome to me. Door handles? I touch them once/drive.

I love the car but I've been driving a 3.2 Carrera for the past three days and I have to say, as capable, agile and light as the 992 is (with a proper spec), it's still GT sized and I often find myself wondering if I should keep looking for the smaller 991.2. I too hate the bubble rear bumper and didn't feel like paying Porsche $5k for different looking plastic so I ordered it in black to hide the black plastic. As for the hybridization, I bet GT cars remain ICE and so will at least the T. The 992 has proven there is strong appetite for manuals, a market Porsche seems to have cornered, and I doubt they'll leave that significant market on the table. Pics of the 992.2 Carrera with what appears to be the SD package looks GT3Tesque and quite sexy.

992 vs 991.2 track front is ~3% wider, rear track is less than 1% wider. Overall width of the wide bodies is the same as is the length. The front track width increase results in a pointier front end than previous models. Weight is a wash for the wide bodies there is a slight increase in Base weight due the universal wide body across the range. Fact is, it one didn't know the 992 was slightly bigger one would have no idea it was larger. Calling bloated is absurd.

I quite agree with you Lee, the 992 generation has reached (possibly outreached) the limits of what is an acceptable size for a 911. Bigger would simply be far too big. While presently enjoying a 992 4GTS, I previously owned a 997 4GTS with the 1st generation PDK box in 2011 which had great balance. I also agree with your dislike of the 992 door handles which are a pain in the backside, and I loathe the electronic interferences such as the warning message which automatically appears when the road is wet. As though a 911 driver doesn’t know what to do if it suddenly starts to rain. Honestly ! On the other hand the 3.0 twin turbo flat-6 is a fabulous engine with bags of oomph and torque and in the GTS configuration even produces a decent sound when the exhaust valve is activated. The Carrera T of the present video seems to be a great proposition, sort of going back to basics, and the 7 speed manual ticks the right box. On the whole it seems to me that the 992.1 generation will no doubt remain a solid reference in many respects. The oncoming 992.2 just has to better it and I think one can trust the engineers and designers at Porsche for doing a very good job. I am looking forward to the 28th of May and also looking very closely at how the GT3 lineup will evolve, because it may be, for this 992.2 generation, the last hurrah for the 4.0 naturally aspirated flat-6. 😎

But downsizing a naturally aspirated engine is a rather surprising piece of news in this context. We’ll just have to see.

I went to launch of the 992 in Gateshead Baltic centre back in 2018. First, it's huge, second, the quality in the cabin was disappointing, more expensive but quality had dropped. The quality issues started with the 991 and across the Porsche range. Check out the carpet quality of a 996 and 997 to a 991 and 992. Also the use of cheap steel in the chassis. Indy's have told me that they have seen 991 and 992s shocking rust. The 996 and 997 look like small toys when parked next to these. Like everything, too big and heavy and packed with tech that you just don't need. I suppose they have to to sell them to the tech hungry market.

My biggest complaint: the creaky plastic interior bits. Creaky steering wheel especially. And that's across three examples spanning the last 4+ years of production. The cheapening of the interior materials is visible everywhere.

Great review - as ever. Of course if everyone agreed on everything things would be very dull so here goes some comments on your comments. I do have to declare an interest - had my own 992 Carrera T for 6 months and loving it. A few comments... Interior compared to the 991. Massive improvement - every time I look at the 991 interior I think what sort of cheapskate has specced the car with so many blank buttons. Has anyone every filled the whole set? - it just looks so cheap. 992 sport design rear end - the designers had a real laugh on this one. /They said - what's wrong with the current rear? What's the most important part of the rear of a car? Of course, the number plate! We must make the number plate the centre of attention as its just so important. Why oh why make the plate more conspicuous? Size of 992 - it is just a little big, BUT a lotus emira is 100mm wider!, a ferrari Roma is similar - 992 is small in comparison as after all its width that counts (so I hear!). The 992 is also actually narrower than the 991 turbo - I hope all the 991 turbo reviews made it clear how big it is? As I said, great review and lots to love about all 911 generations.

Can’t understand the 6 year bit unless it was when it was first revealed. U.K. got 2019 cars, Porsche likes to import them here as can charge more I’ve noticed the models are priced fairly close in dollars and pounds which means Porsche is making more on each car.

The 992 generation will be judged by its long standing competitors in the U.S.A. Every other Porsche series trounced the antiquated leaf spring cars that GM was building for quality , but the playing field RADICALLY changed in the 992 generation. When the first mid engine, GTLM CHASSIS rolled off the GM assembly plant line in the C8 Corvette series. Then immediately the ENTIRE Porsche 911 series came into focus as being overpriced and INFERIOR from a design standpoint. Corvette since the debut has literally taken down the ENTIRE Lamborghini Huracan and Aventador lineups from start to finish if we are truly talking sports cars and handling. We will remember the 992 gen cars as good but overpriced.

"History" will not charge at all, as the whole car history will remain a socially important, but in the end obscure side note of history. Concerning the 911 history, the 992 is the 911 that finally arrived at the size of the 928, almost to the milimeter. And the double-wishbone front suspension of the GT3.

I have a 991.2 S now but a 992 4S slated for delivery in July. I cannot wait. I really like the 991.2 but the 992 has a far superior interior in my opinion and still feels like a 911 when I drive it. When I test drove the 992 and parked it next to my 991.2 at the dealer, they look virtually the same size-wise, the 992 not “bloated”. It’s in people’s heads.

@@user-mx8py3yv8r Yes I know, totally characterless just different states of tune. The 991.1 base through to GTS had an engaging and characterful NA engine. The 991.2 got the turbos and they're OK but all they did for the 992 was change the state of tune (in effect) add that to the german taxi cab style interior and you have a car that declined in character from 991.1 -> 991.2 -> 992.1. The 992 was the moment Porsche turned into BMW except with a few niche marketing products.

@@VK6AB- I own a 992 T and a 997 C4. Truth is, the 997 feels even better than the 991 IMO. The 992 is definitely softer than the previous generations, but it's an absolute pleasure to drive. Porsche somehow made the car feel NA. Sound is sacrificed a bit because of the turbos, but the instant torque is super fun when you gun it. BMW? The M4 weighs ~800lbs more than the 992. Gross. My '24 only weighs 60lbs more than my '06. The new M4 weighs 500lbs more than the E46 M3 I had in '04. I see what you're saying, but BMWs are bloated af. That pig nostril grill is a joke too. If you can, drive a T with a manual. It may change your mind.

@@VK6AB- You are certainly entitled to your opinion. Porsche owners in general disagree with you as evidenced by Porsche selling out every 992 they make before they even arrive on the lots for the past 3-4 years. There's a reason the Carrera T thread has more posts than any other on Rennlist. I didn't buy a 992 for 4 years until I drove a T. I thought you might be open minded to a model that fixed some of the 'problems' you describe, but I get it. I was dead set against a 992 as well until that day I got to drive a T and was like holy Fk! They really did a great job with the combination of features. Sounds like your driving experience/needs are way different than mine. As a daily, I think the 992 is great. For track fun, my 4C wins every time.

@@TheDjcarlos67 It’s painfully obvious you’ve never driven one and just because you drive an old 996 doesn’t give you the experience to make such a statement. I’m on my tenth 911, currently enjoying a 992 T manual. My Porsche journey started with a manual 997 C2S and includes both Gen 1 and Gen 2 997 GT3s. What amazes me are these comments from people who’ve clearly never been behind the wheel of one. manufacturers have to comply with modern safety standards, but make no mistake-the 992 T (and the 991 T) are some of the best daily sports cars that can actually be driven relatively hard on UK roads. So maybe try driving one before spouting off.
