I say this knowing full well that 2020 was a thing: 2016 was the drunkest year I have ever lived through. Every year since then has simply tried to imitate the booze-soaked stupidity, but you can never truly replicate the one that started it all. Heaven help us.

Novak Djokovic had one of the greatest tennis seasons ever, winning the australian open, french open, and getting to the us open final. He went 65-9 that year in total and won 7 titles. He beat every member of the big 3 in big tournaments that year beating federer in the australian open semi finals, nadal at the semis of Indian Wells, and murray on the australian open final. Even though he lost to wawrinka in the us open final it is one of the best years of novaks career, the highlight being him winning the french open to complete his career grand slam.

I think you’re confusing 2016 with 2015. 2015 was way better for Djokovic when he won 3 majors, the ATP finals, 11 total titles, and a 82-6 record. In 2016 he was only good up until the French Open. After that he fell off pretty significantly. He lost in the third round in Wimbledon and lost in the first round in the Olympics. The only reason he made the US Open final was because many of the players in his draw withdrew from injury and Wawrinka beat him fairly handily in the final. If anything 2016 was almost like 2 seasons within 1. The first half of the year Djokovic dominated with wins at the Australian Open and French Open and in the second half the season Murray dominated with wins at Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the ATP finals.

You left out the absolutely INSANE 100th Indianapolis 500 on May 29, 2016, where a rookie won the race via fuel mileage. He was so low on fuel at the end of the race he ran out of fuel in the last corner of the last lap, but had just enough of a lead that he was able to coast across the finish line. Virtually no one had heard of him before that day, but after that day, Alexander Rossi became a household name.

And don’t forget about the 2016 Masters Golf Tournament, where Jordan Spieth held a five stroke lead with nine holes to play before collapsing with a quadruple bogey on the 12th hole and having a two stroke deficit by the 18th where he watched the First European to win the tournament since 1999 beat him - the defending green jacket owner. At the Open Championship in Troon Scotland, the first Scandinavian won a major golf tournament, beating Phil Mickelson by three strokes. The FedEx cup was even more competitive as there were 10+ golfers in the running after the points reset following the third tournament. It came down to playoff holes in a three way tie before Rory Mclroy won it all.

the crazy thing is that i had people stop playing fantasy football/watching the nfl over Kaepernick but you're right they probably wouldnt have cared and maybe even drafted deshaun watson in fantasy

2004 is also one of the contenders for greatest year in sports : Red Sox reverse sweeping Yankees and ending their curse, Pistons shocking everyone by beating Lakers, Panthers and Patriots playing one of the greatest superbowls of all time, Tampa Bay winning Stanley cup for the first time during their first finals appearance, small teams like Porto and Monaco playing in UEFA champions league final etc.

Don’t forget KD blowing a 3-1 lead and then going to Golden State. Probably the biggest move in modern basketball history.

Very surprised no one in this comment section has mentioned Portugal winning Euro 2016. Probably the 4th/3rd greatest underdog story in international football history
