In the early part of his career he threw every Pitch as hard as he could, but it took the Catcher, Roseboro to talk to him to tell him To stop trying to throwing so hard and start Throwing with finesse. And with that he became one of the all time greats. And when he was forced to retire early, bc of elbow issues, he even acknowledged that if he hadn't been trying to throw as hard as he Possibly could early on in his career, his career Probably would have lasted for several years Longer then it did. After he followed the Advice, that was given him, he became almost unhittable. And over a period if five Seasons he led the majors in strike outs, and Shutouts

People weren't saying Ryan was throwing 108 then. That's a recent reassessment of his pitch that was recorded at 100.8. The basics of it are that that pitch was measured when the ball was 10 feet from home plate. Modern pitches are measured 10 feet from the mound, a difference of 40 feet. If Nolan's pitch was accurately measured, then if you measured the same pitch at the same point we measure pitches today (10 feet from the mound), it would have been traveling 108mph.

As soon as the ball is released it is traveling as fast as it ever will. The ball will never accelerate in the air. It's physics.

no, they currently measure as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand, and they used to measure it somewhere between 10 fett from the olate to at the plate, it wasnt consistent. Either way, it's at keast a 45-50ft difference with the ball slowing ~8%. So Ryan's 100.9 near the plate would havr been measure at about 108moh out of his hand. Moreover, they measure very few pitches when he was in his 20s and 30sc so the 100.9 thay cloeckes at the olate was almost certainly not the fastest he ever threw, it's damn near statistically impossible. It's very likey he threw 102 or better at the plate on occasion, which would translate to 110mph out of his hand.

108 is impossible. Since MPH has been collected Chapman has consistently been the fastest with 102-105mph. Everything before is legend.

Watched Nolan Ryan pitch against our high school (Brazosport in Freeport, Texas) when I was in Junior High. Our schools were not in the same district, so it probably was about '64. The coach told our players to stand way back in the batters box. He did not want them getting hurt. Cannot find any record of the game on any internet site. I do remember all our team members shook his hand after the game 😀. Wow, that was 59 years ago!

My first ball game ever was Jays first year 1977. Me and my dad had row 8 directly behind the plate. Jays were playing the Angels and Nolan Ryan was pitching. We were on the streetcar on the way to the game and this old next to us had a transistor radio and we heard someone on the radio say "Nolan Ryan will not be starting today as scheduled. Instead, he will start tomorrow's game". My dad was livid. I learned new words that day.

Apples and oranges. Today they're measured leaving the pitcher's hand. As noted, in Ryan's day, it was measured just before it crossed the plate. The ball had battled air resistance and gravity for a ways.

At the time I remember that it was reckoned he threw at 99 mph. I remember him throwing George Brett one of those fastballs in the playoffs and George hit it into the upper deck in right field in Yankee stadium.

The 108 for Nolan is a bad estimate. It hinges on losing velocity based on the worst possible atmospheric conditions, the gun being properly calibrated by the time he threw it, his spin being poor, and most people give him the benefit of 60.6 feet of deceleration. The weather in Anaheim would have not been humid so atmosphere is wrong. Nolans spin was amazing so it helped eliminate deceleration, and not just is it measured at 50.6 but also Nolan dropped down the slope and extended so it probably only traveled 45 or so feet so it probably was closer to 105 or 106. Also Aroldis is a current reliever.

You realize that the hypotenuse of a right triangle is farther than it’s base? So there’s no way he only threw that ball 45 feet. Also, the baseball slows down about 8 miles an hour on its course to the plate on average. That would put the pitch at at least 106, and I think it’s likely he threw 108 given a slight inaccuracy in the radar or at least at some other point in his career

@gradyjones7017 okay Pythagoras, he release the ball about 5 feet off the ground and it crosses about 4 feet of the ground so 1 squared + 45 squared equals the "hypotenuse" of you imagined right triangle, it turns out that it's basically still 45 ft. Also the declaration is based on many factors and they weren't all at their worst. Hate when people think they know something because they misunderstood science.

@gradyjones7017 and to your "no way it only traveled 45 feet" your correct but still wrong. The ball was measured ahead of the plate by 10 feet and think pitching mechanics. Nolan would drive down the front slope and extend his arm out as he released. Nolan is 6 feet tall so its not unreasonable that he extended 5 feet.

Todays readings are taken when the ball is released, the ball loses 4-6 mph (dependent on spin rate, atmospheric conditions) by the time it reaches the hitter. The old guns clocked Nolan 100+ at the plate. Todays pitchers throw much harder on avg than before but while the 100mph looks cool on the scoreboard or tv screen, the velocity the batter sees at the plate is mid 90s (still very fast and very hard to hit). Facing 90+ when I played was no fun, constantly facing 95+ from 3 different pitchers a game must really suck. On a side note, how fun would it be to somehow have Nolan and Chapman in their prime getting clocked with the same gun? Or imagine having to the face The Express for 7-8 innings from the right side then having Chapman come in to close out from the left; no thank you.

No, because it’s an estimate. Mathematically derived so it’s not official and there’s probably some standard error in the calculation. The officially MEASURED fastest pitch was by Chapman.

@@davsaltegoit’s physics so they can get right to that number with a high degree of certainty. Guy threw 98 at 46 years old so given how much pitchers velocity tails off at the end of their careers no doubt he would’ve been close to 108.

In Little League, back in 1959, I tried out for pitcher. I of course chose my fastball. Coach said, it was at least 100 miles per hour, as it easily clearing the top of the backstop. Of course, that pitch was out of the zone.

Eddie Feigner threw softballs 100 mph from second base. He said he never threw over 3/4 speed and still threw over 110 mph from pitcher’s mound. He had about 100 perfect no hitters games.

I played little league on the same team as Archie Corbin in Beaumont tx. Even in little league he was like 6 feet tall and threw unbelievably fast for our age. He was unhittable for most everyone. He went on to play in the majors, and a guy I played high-school baseball with, mark petkovsek, who was also a pitcher. I pitched and played 1st base. Neither one of them made a big splash or anything and we're all in our 50s now, but I played with some good players...particularly pitchers

@ernienegrete5702 his name sounded familiar so I looked him up and all the teams he was on. The two pitchers that I knew that made it to the big league pitched for 7 different teams, but per Wikipedia, Cory never played with any of those teams. But yeah we both played with some great players who got to live the dream. I played in college and waa scouted just a little but no offers. I was a pitcher and 1st base. I was actually better at first base than pitching. My curve broke more than any coach of mine ever has seen. I'd throw straight at a right-handed batters head and even when they knew it was coming they'd drop. The ball ended low and away. The problem was I gripped and threw it with incredible wrist movement. It would have soon destroyed my wrist. If I threw it the correct, no kidding, I was less accurate and it of course didn't break as much. But yeah first practice in high-school I made varsity as a freshman and the first pitch I threw everyone was, kid you not, speechless like they were questioning if that actually happened...great memories, huh?

I'll go with Nolan Ryan. I watched him warm up as a kid, the ball sounded like bacon sizzling on a griddle. I could hardly see it when he threw it, I'll never forget it.

Wait, if they clocked Ryan's pitch at 108 mph, how is 105.8 the record? Is it because clocking 10 feet earlier makes it faster, and the ball should be slower speeds by the time it reaches the plate?

They clocked Ryan’s pitch at 100.9 mph 10 feet early and I guess using math they believe the pitch would’ve been 108 by the time it reached the plate. Doesn’t make much sense to me since you’d assume it slows down over those 10 feet but it definitely looked fast in the video

@@CooperJ56 Ooooh, gotcha! I thought the video was saying it was clocked at 108, but after some math, it hit 109, not 100.9. But saying it was 100.9, not 109, makes sense.

@@CooperJ56the discrepancy is because they USED to measure pitches 10ft before it reached home. Today it's measured as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand, which reads a faster speed being that the ball slows as soon as it's thrown. Ryan's 100.9mph pitch in the mid-1970s would've read 105-106 with today's radar guns.

Adjusting for no pitcher's mound and the fact that the measurements were at the plate, Steve Dalkowski threw in excess of 105 miles per hour for over 45 minutes before the first generation radar guns were able to pick up his pitch. This was the day after throwing 283 pitches in a game.

At 85 or 90 it’s extremely fast. When you pass 100 you’re breaking the wind barrier, ball floats all around the plate. An ex pro player was hitting flys for me and that ball was so high it was weaving back and forth coming down like a missile. Dangerous

My idol was Nolan Ryan and I tried to emulate everything about his windup. I got the windup down...never could nail down those 100+ mph fastballs though!!!!!

The Orioles had a reliever named Steve Dalkowski, who was said to throw harder than Ryan....but that was anecdotal. I recall a catcher once claimed Houston's J.R. Richard was a little faster than Ryan... and that catcher caught both men when they were both Astros.

You say they tracked Ryans pitch before it got to the plate but my understanding is today they track pitch speed as it leaves the hand. Tread athletics shows speed for their pitchers and if you watch the speed is displayed before the ball even huts the glove. Anyone know how they track today?

Nolan Ryan threw hard, extremely hard, for 28 years. 150 pitches a game was no problem for him. Greatest pitcher to never win a Cy Young.

Nolan Ryan has to be the most powerful of the power pitchers .. consistently throwing 100+ mph well into the 8th and 9th innings of games.. he was just unhittable during the 1970's and 80's

Well, I'll tell you right now I know who's thrown the most over 100 miles an hour! And whoever was second wasn't even remotely close to Nolan Ryan how many he threw over 100 mph! And one more thing, my cousin Nolan had over 5,000 strikeouts. A record that will never be topped.

Not the fastest but J R Richards a Houston Astros pitcher regularly threw 103-104 which was amazing and the batters were terrified of him because he never knew where the ball was going.

The fastest pitch will always be out of the zone. When a pitcher averages 102-103, which is insane already, the pitch that they finally do throw that gets to 105 or 106, like Chapman’s, will get there by way of being pulled just a little more than normal or some other small detail that is out of the ordinary, to give an out of ordinary result.
