She rose to fame in Norway at age 7 for her auditions for Norway's Got Talent, and won it at age 8. Since then she has traveled the world singing for charity organizations and concerts, helping them raise over $22,000,000. Angelina is blessed with a very deep natural voice yet held her own reaching the high notes. She is a true music prodigy but the only one I know of who specializes in vocals. Angelina won Norway's Got Talent at age 8 and record companies wanted to sign her then but thankfully she has a very loving family who has done very well managing her career. Please take the time to read the biography I compiled for her. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman, who has chosen to keep his life private. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age after listening to Whitney Houston on KZfaq. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was considered a prodigy as an artist and poet and married a Japanese man who passed away in 2019. Angelina speaks Norwegian, Farsi, English and Japanese. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where she received vocal training starting around age 4. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. Angelina asked her mother to enter her in Norway’s Got Talent (NGT) at age 5 but that talent show had a minimum age requirement of 7. Angelina at age 6 and 7 did record a few songs in a recording studio, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. Angelina is blessed with a deep voice with a beautiful rich tone and has always made her sound much older than her age. Many compare her voice to that of Amy Winehouse. Her voice is highly emotional which is very rare for a young girl and some people can’t accept that such a soulful voice can come from someone who has not had enough life experience. One vocal coach on KZfaq recently said, “If you have a song and want to have more emotion added to that song, have Angelina sing it.” At age 7, Angelina’s audition on NGT was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. The next performance on NGT was her cover of Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. Angelina is undoubtedly the most talented person i have ever seen in my 70 years. Speaks four languages, has donated millions to homeless people and charities, written a novel, arranges and composes her own music, and in my opinion makes other artists recordings even better in most cases. Right on! AJ is a jazz singer with Amy Winehouse influences. My introduction to Angelina was on her first appearance at Norway's Got Talent and I didn't expect much from a 7-year-old. Just a cute little girl, all nervous, rushing the song in parts, hesitating and then stumbling over or forgetting her words and generally acting her age and doing her best to get through a childish song like "Twinkle, twinkle little star". Well, it was a seven-year-old child who appeared on the stage. She was small and had wild hair and gaps in her mouth, where there once were baby teeth. My first surprise was how she confidently answered questions put to her by one of the judges. She showed no signs of nerves and when she was asked what song she was going to perform, she declared she was going to sing a song by the legendary Billie Holiday. Then she gestured off-stage for the technician to start the music and started singing. Yeah! The body of the 7-year-old child was still there, but the voice wasn't. It was that of a 40-50 year old black woman who had been singing for decades. That first moment of surprise has been experienced many times since then. I have followed her career since I saw that first video on KZfaq and in the years she has been singing publicly she has mastered many musical genres, including Blues, Country, Disco, Jazz, Pop, R&B and Soul, EDM and Rock and covered songs first performed by many famous singers, like Adele, Whitney Houston, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Lana del Ray, Avicii, Bill Withers, Gloria Gaynor, Andy Williams, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and many others: in total over 220 different songs and 82 different performers. She takes ownership of every song she sings while still paying respect to the original. She never goes into unnecessary theatrics. As others have already said, I was quite impressed with your insightful reaction here. Most people who react to this video as their introduction to her don't detect the jazz influences in her vocals - or at least, they don't mention that. I was a little concerned at the beginning when you said she was ahead of the beat, _way_ before the point in the video where most other people hear that (the first time she sings "nothing, nothing, nothing", whereas you heard it when she sang "there's nowhere to hiiiide"). I was like, uh-oh… he's gonna pick this apart, and point out every little thing he doesn't like about her performance. But then you said she was killing it, and I relaxed a bit. [grin] You are correct that this is not the style of singing she typically does (all the belting, I mean - as you said, "She's singing this because she _can_ " not because it's what she normally does). She almost always sings _much_ more subdued songs - although her barnburners tend to be recommended a lot, so you will be inundated with plenty of requests for those. For a nice contrast with this pyrotechnical "tribute", check out her rendition of Rihanna's "Stay" almost a year earlier, recorded at home accompanied by solo acoustic guitar when she was 12 (also on her CoverChannel - specifically the video with ID v=_GSVPvCy3Yg). According to the guitarist, it was a first or second take, done with very little preparation (you can see her consulting the lyrics throughout the song). I would recommend an honest-to-goodness jazz cover, but you'll hear those soon enough… (I'm assuming you will stick with her for many reactions. Please do. She's one of the most versatile singers you will ever hear. And you will not _believe_ what she could do when she was 8 and 9. And 10… OMG, when she was 10… [LOL])
