Rather than giving up on diets, most people do not want to give up on their addiction to excessive levels carbs. If people could eat carbs in 'moderation' (whatever that might be) then maybe they would never have an issue, but almost everyone over consumes carbs and is not willing to give them up. I personally very much appreciate Dr. Westman's videos.

I know this is totally off topic, but does anyone know if donut 🍩 retailers like Duncan or others old chains, once use Beef tallow to fry in several decades ago, just as McDonald's fried French fries in tallow up until the early 1990s. I realize donuts 🍩 are bad for us regardless, but rancid or oxidized seed oils of today must be even worse that tallow fried carbohydrates...??? Or does it not matter at that point? Cuz people in the 1950s & 60s ate a lit if carbs, but just didn't seem to be as overweight as people of today... It's all very intriguing. I myself am Carnivore, & 90% or more of my diet is Ruminant animal meats. I hope to expand that & eventually get some vegetables bk into my diet, & possibly a pcs if fruit on a rare occasion, but I must 1st get my gi tract healed, & get my fasting Glucose below ~100 ea morning. I had it there for a while, bk when I wasn't very fat adapted, & as I believe I'm becoming more fat adapted, it seems my Glucose is going bk up 10-15 points.... I'm only about ~210 days in, & although I do research at least a few hrs a day on most days, I feel like I know nothing. Lost a lit if weight, & hope to heal my fatty liver & a cyst they say is on it. They are so incompetent, they didn't even tell me for 2yrs I had a cyst, but on my last CT scan, they then remarked how my cyst had not increased in size in 2yrs. That was a shock because up until then, no doctors had told me I even had a cyst, so they must have missed it on the 1st test. I know we shouldn't play doctors, but if you Don't take an interest into your own health, it may very well not happen at all in a 15 min visit to someone who isn't even an MD anymore, & is either a Nurse or Physician Assistant. :Shrug: Hav a great day everyone 😀

According to Dr. Lustig, fatty liver disease was unheard of in adults before the 1980s, unless you were an alcoholic. Nowadays, even children are treated for fatty liver disease. The reason is simple. Alcohol and fructose are being metabolized the same way in the liver. Some experts even refer to fructose as “alcohol without the buzz.”

One of the big mistakes that Thomas makes is confusing saturated fat in the blood vs saturated fat that you eat. When you EAT saturated fat, it breaks down substantially into different components before getting to your blood. Some of the highly cited studies showing saturated fat causing insulin resistance were done by injecting saturated fat directly into the blood of mice (eating carbohydrates). See Dr. Ben Bikman's video on saturated fat for more details: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n8ydmMyI1Ly2n2Q.html

Yup, I've also seen an in vitro study where the cells were bathed in saturated fat, and unsaturated fat, and the conclusion was that unsaturated is better. This is not how cells in the body come into contact with fats though, rather they access fat via lipoproteins like LDL. The only time they could come into direct contact with fats is when we get organ fat ie. "marbling", but that seems to come into existence via high fructose, or possibly high carbohydrates too.

Excellent point to consider is that these foods, especially saturated fats, can rarely be consumed in isolation. Unless you are swallowing sticks of butter or gulping down glasses of melted bacon fat, the saturated fats are consumed along with carbs. Just as all studies that test people eating a McDonald's diet and then say that eating meat promotes heart disease. The meat in a McDonald's meal is probably 5-10% of the calories. The rest are vegetarian and carbs, including the fries, coke and bun. Yet the heart attack is attributed to the burger patty. Go figure.

People need to do their own cooking. Then it's easy to eat almost only fat, with some protein, and almost no carbs. If you try to eat out or ready meals, then no that's not going to work. Bacon and eggs works fine. Butter in tea is good for breakfast. Repetitive and boring meals actually help in reducing calorie intake. Edit: That's streaky bacon. Not meaty British style bacon. Use cured streaky bacon that doesn't mess up the pan with water, boiling the meat (yes, the industry ADDS water to meat to make more money).

I completed 1 year of carnivore yesterday. I have never felt better in my life and I'm 71. I've been low-carb/keto off and on for 30 years but carnivore took me to a whole new level. There is an old Huey Lewis song called "I Want a New Drug". I feel like I got that new drug that the song describes. I was having itchy rash problems a year ago and could pin some of it on vegetables so I thought I would do a one-month elimination diet. At the time I was fasting and eating keto and weighed 132 lbs. I took a few days to titrate my coffee consumption and then went for it. I ate a TON of fat. I ate fatty ribeye covered in ghee for months. I don't know how much I'm supposed to weigh but I decided to let my body figure it out. I have weighed 132 for the majority of this last year. I had surgery last week so I lost a few pounds but otherwise 132(there were a couple of cheese incidents causing gains of 5 lbs but it went away quickly as soon as I stopped eating the cheese). THIS IS A MIRACLE!!! I have never in my life maintained my weight for a whole year, not even close. I described myself as a human yo-yo. I've learned not to say always and never but I hope I always stay carnivore and I never eat carbs again.

@@kathrynray5908 Thanks Kathryn. Every now and then I truly realise what I have achieved overall and it amazes me at how simple it was to do; but I had a strong motivator - I didn't want to go blind or end up on dialysis because of the diabetes. Some people _are_ addicted to cheese because it contains a morphine-like substance, which is what causes constipation. The only reason I miss cheese is because it can add variety because of its flavour. But I _can_ live without it. Tonight for dinner I had some beef brisket with some broth and I added 2 large slices of Danish mild salami and half an avocado. It was very tasty. I hadn't had salami before and I'm trying to be a bit more adventurous. I even bought a small fresh salmon cutlet the other day to try. It wasn't great but it wasn't horrible either. I just need to experiment to find how to make it a bit nicer. I wish you all the best.

Avoid sweets, alcohol, grains and ultra processed junk marketed as food and eat animal products within as short an eating window as you can manage to get 1500 to 2000 calories a day and exercise. Some low starch vegetables are Ok in moderation but not really necessary. You will be healthier and lose weight. Lose the idea you need three meals a day. As someone who spent 40 years jumping through their hoops - reduced red meat, eliminated all added fats, ate whole grains, no added sugar, reduced food intake, rarely ate any junk food and exercised - I have to say the only time it helped my weight was when I did a lot of exercise (which I couldn't keep up as I had no energy and would get health problems). I gave up the idea of losing weight. However, after a few months on the carnivore diet for unrelated reasons I noticed that I had lost a lot of fat, and my daughters found the same. From what I’ve learned (Barry Sears’ Toxic Fat from back in the day, he taught me sugar has trouble entering cells with a “hard shell” cell membrane - it needs fluidity to let energy in and out (sodium/potassium pump), so there should be a balance of fatty acids and electrolytes. Where’s everyone getting their potassium bc we need A LOT?! And thanks for bringing up the Randle Cycle, bc I also see it’s either/or regarding cancer treatments > carnivore or plant based.

@@DeeElle2 Interesting, Bart Kay says that the cells are purposefully locking out the glucose, and in some cases they can absorb the glucose and lock out the fat. But oftentimes they are blocking the glucose to prevent damage. But even if you eat high sugar and low fat you are still not going to escape the glycation damage. But mixing carbs with fat will cause that Randle cycle insulin resistance effect.

Dr. Westman you are the only person that I follow ever since I found you. I have been confused by the differing opinions that one can find on the Internet, KZfaq especially. I follow a high-protein diet actuation color diet I just eliminated processed foods and all sugars from my meals and I found myself one week later withLess inflammation in my body ability to walk up and down steps and all joint pain eliminated my energy level soared I was sleeping better my mood was better. After a month I was like a brand new person felt like I was back in my 20s. Went to my PCP and was so excited about all of this and my PCP told me that the best day to be on his vegetarian and high carbohydrate that the fat that I was consuming was going to catch up with me and my later years. So I went back to eating the American diet of the food pyramid incorporating more fruits vegetables whole grains and guess what it didn’t take very long at all for me to feel awful. I decided to follow my own body signals and once again I’ve started too fast and I’ll eat basically a carnivore diet and I feel so much better and I owe that to finding your channel and listening from The very beginning of your videos. I am also in search of another PCP who aligns himself with a current scientific studies and research. Thank you for taking the time to explain things in a way that are easily understandable and that are based in the scientific method.

For drivers who get confused about left side or right side of the road The left side of the road or right side of the road is a bad analogy because in either situation the driver is always in the middle of the road and the passenger beside the driver is always on the sidewalk side of the road in both instances. So the sugar and fat are the driver and passenger of the car which is the liver.

For majority of the population, yes. But my HbA1C was highest (6.2) on carnivore/keto (6 months + 12 months) and back normal on a high carb/low fat vegetarian diet. I stopped carnivore only because my HRV was bottoming out below 20ms. My A1C and all metrics on my fitness tracker has rebounded since. So there's something else at play neither community fully understands for a small segment of the population.
@masterchiefburgess
@masterchiefburgess 24 күн бұрын
Several doctors and researchers have explained that. You have to take those readings i n context. The A1c is based on the ASSUMPTION that the average blood cell lasts about 3 months before a combination of glycation and oxidation destroys it and the cell is removed from the bloodstream. This 3-month 'life-span' is based on the average person eating a high carb diet which glycates and oxidzes the blood cells much more quickly. In a someone consuming a low-carb/keto/carnivore diet, the blood cells last considerably longer, which skews the A1c result. A lot of low-carbers see a rise in their A1c, but that needs to be taken in context with their fasting insulin, C-Peptide and other bio-markers, You likely had nothing to be concerned about.
@djmagnitize
@djmagnitize 23 күн бұрын
@masterchiefburgess yes I understand that but it was declining HRV and climbing resting heart rate on my fitness tracker over 18 months that made me ditch the diet which has since rebounded better than my previous baseline by going low fat/high carb. I was willing to chalk up the high A1C and cholesterol to a fat metabolism but when my HRV was consistently below 20ms and RHR crept up to 60 from 54, I knew I had to make a change. So lower A1C and "normal" cholesterol is just collateral as I judge by the metrics on my Whoop.

I am so very thankful that after being dxed with diabetes in Oct 2021 I found low carb via "sensible" channels and simple solutions. It did take me a while to start consuming more fat which was a combination of having been brainwashed into low fat from the 1970s but also because I actually didn't like eating fat. These days I have found ways to incorporate the fat in a way that is doable for me. For example when I cook a roast I scrape off the fat from the outside of it and add it to the liquid and then blend it with a stick blender; previously I would scrape it off and and throw it out. The broth with the fat blended in over the meat is very tasty and makes an enjoyable meal.

In German we had this diet called "TRENNKOST" ages ago, it meant you'd eat the meat(main dish) and then some hours later the carbs(side dish), this actually makes a lot of sense, of course it's better to keep carbs low entirely.

I'm decidedly in the low carb camp, where you drop carbs to the minimum to have the most benefit to putting insulin resistance into remission. Fat does not influence insulin resistance. Thomas hurt my brain on that one, it conflicted with what I have experienced. Since I started diabetes medication I have checked my blood glucose regularly and I have learned what raises my blood sugar. It wasn't the meat and fat, it was the carbs. I wish I had discovered the low carb lifestyle earlier rather than the fat is all my problems camp. I have been targeting 50grams or less everyday now and this year I am down another 40lbs (260 down from 370 last year). I more often than not feel GREAT. That's a major change for me, I use to feel this good 1 or 2 days out of the week about 10 years ago. Another clue that the carbs are the problem, now that I am limiting carbs , sometimes dinner is just a piece of tasty meat, my waking glucose is between 74 and 100 which is a huge improvement when I would check it when I got up and it was 130 to 140. When I skip breakfast it use to be around 130 until I eat later in the day now the highest is see when I skip breakfast is 100. That seems to me to indicate that what I am doing is helping. Better yet my cravings are gone, I can look at a table loaded with cookies, pies, donuts and then go past it and fill my cup with water and go back to my bench. If I need a little snack, I just have a meat stick. I am a sample size of one your mileage may vary. Thanks for taking this one on.
