The #1 Mistake Travellers to India Make

I continuously see travellers to India making this mistake, and it's landing some of them in big trouble, especially female tourists. I'll tell you how not to make this mistake in India while walking through the most dangerous area of India for foreigners.
Watch all my scammer and travel safety videos • India Scammers & Trave... .
Where you stay in India and which hotel you choose is incredibly important. Paharganj in New Delhi is ground zero for touts, scammers, drugs, the red light area, and human trafficking in India.
Yet many visitors to India continue to stay there, probably because most of the hotels in Delhi are in this location. The same goes for Colaba in Mumbai. I'll show you where to stay you can stay safe while in India and avoid all the bad things that are attracted to these touristy areas.

Ross Piyan watch his 3rd latest video , where he says he gets trolled through foreign comments on his videos . If he really was minimising the bad side, he wouldnt get comments on videos calling indians as scammers , street shitters , rapists , sexists or whatever they like saying. I disagree with that part.

It's the same mistake that travellers to _any_ country make. They don't do their share of research before travelling to another country. Always search for opinions on the best places to travel and stay and the do's and dont's in another country. You need to be well prepared.

I have been to Delhi last month, and went to paharganj just to see with my own eyes what is all about, after the videos from you Karl, and also from Mr. Bald. And honestly is not so dangerous, just be smart and you will be safe. Of course, being a man is easier, for girls unfortunately is different. But I went there during the day and during the night and had no problems at all. I even bought some nice stuff for extremely cheap price, just be able to bargain and walk away when you feel they are scamming you. Even one night my phone battery was almost dead and I needed to charge it and I just asked to a shopkeeper and he kept my phone for half an hour on charge. Everywhere there is good people and bad people, just be smart and you can go everywhere. Jai Bharat!

If you’re coming all the way to India and want to play it cheap then you are bound to face countless scams and trouble for you are choosing to stay in a cheap place; it’s basically the same for any other country...pay less, get crappy hotels, food, etc.

I'm an Indian from city of Kolkata and I completely agree with you about delhi. That particular area of pahargang(I personally stayed in a hotel there and I got scammed even though I'm an Indian and I know hindi) is the root of all scams around delhi. It is a part of old delhi and a whole different world than 'New Delhi'. I suggest everyone to avoid old delhi/ pahargang area. It is one of India's worst place. And don't confuse about two delhi, one is new and other is old. New delhi is India's capital, not old delhi, two are completely different in terms of their characteristics. Always choose new delhi, both are adjacent to each other but they are so different than each other. One has everything modern another is running shitshow for decades. Probably it is because new delhi is controlled by central gov and old delhi is controlled by their state gov which is corrupt in nature.

Karl, you are spot on. I also stayed in Paharganj and my decision was based on how close it was to the train station and I think Lonely Planet made note of the area. Good thing was that it was towards the end of my trip around India and had already had some good experience under my belt after being there for a month. Everything went fine for me but I could see why you want folks to avoid the area and fully support your recommendation. Keep up the great work!

I've stayed in Paharganj four times for maybe three weeks altogether and I loved it. It is really fascinating and so alive with all sorts of people from all over the world. I never saw anyone shooting up and maybe I'm just oblivious but I didn't see any prostitution. I always stay in the same hotel which was highly recommended by the standard guide book. The owners there were very helpful and honest. A couple of weeks in Paharganj will be an education in how to deal with touts and scammers. You can't avoid them in India so learning how to interact with them is important. You could stay in expensive hotels elsewhere and not learn much except how to spend money.

I passed to the east of the New Delhi railway station, thankfully I didn't go through Paharganj which is directly west of the New Delhi Railway Station. Main reason is lots of tourists travel on budget; which means they go for cheap accommodation. And as you said, you get what you pay. So imagine going to India, or a country that is comparable to India, and decide to stay in a cheap accommodation. Obviously, most likely, you will end up being harassed or get scammed. Accommodation is a place where you should feel safe and comfortable. If one thinks that they only stay in a hotel to sleep ,thus, do not want to pay extra for a better accommodation, is madness.

Stay in South Delhi if you want a more sedate experience, but if you want gritty, dirty Delhi full of action and street life, there is nothing wrong with Paharganj. Scammers and touts are easily spotted, the key is not engaging and shutting them down before they begin. Hello Karl, I'm a regular viewer of your videos but in this video I disagree a bit with you, I know there are a lot of scammers roaming around in paharganj but they are not locals, most of these people are the ones which come to delhi from different states of india and also from other countries to make a living, but when they fail to do so they do bad things to other people. I know few locals might be bad also but that is not a case with delhi or paharganj only that is a scene with every place in the world, you find good and bad people everywhere. And I'm not saying all these things randomly I'm saying all these with experience because i am living in paharganj from last 20+ years. I'm a Paharganj Local. And I'm not a scammer or a bad person. Thank you.

@Karl Rock - Being watching your videos for a couple of months now. Was planning a trip to India before Coronavirus hit. Your videos helped me plan some aspects of my trip. Appreciate you and your videos. Keep up the good work. Will share my experience once I finally make the trip, after the travel world opens up again.

Your advice is so spot on. We did the golden triangle last summer and made mistakes in our travel. Although we kind of did the opposite to your video - we stayed mostly 5 star and felt sooo cut off from real India and soo secluded. We felt safe and proveledged, yes, but we really felt like we lacked the cultural experiences and didn't have much opportunity to wander out and immerse ourselves without our hired tour guides. Next time we need to find the middle ground.

If you want a middle ground, stay in an air bnb or a homestay. Dont go for cheap ones obviously.

It was the main place to stay because the railway was right next to it, nowadays it's so easy to fly around India, I now often stay out near the airport, but I have stayed dozens of times in Pahar Ganj. I've stayed in other parts of Delhi too, but this is just so handy getting the train onwards to wherever in India.

I booked my more than 1 mth stay when doing volunteer work in Mumbai thr Airbnb,. I wanted to get the true Indian experience. She was (and is to this day) the most horrible person I have ever met. Extremely rude to everyone around her. Lashing out at her poor maid. A horrible experience. So sad as I was hoping to learn some cooking and language whilst home staying. So sad, as it became nothing like that. So there is no guarantee, but you can hope for the best. I believe I was very unlucky though. Luckily I met lovely people outside the flat....where I spent most of my time due to "Dracula" at "home", waiting to verbally abuse me.
