I don’t think you’ll beat pushers that easy with these techniques. Pushers with more physical endurance really like to move from the left to the right on the baseline. A more effective way is to let THEM approach to the net. It’s a position where they’re not very familiar with. Most of the time they will run back to the baseline instead of approaching to the net. When they are running backwards, you have the ability to increase the pace of the rally and force them to an error. Another way to beat pushers is to give your opponent less time to recover. How? Play the balls very quickly( just after they’ve bounced) and try to play them cross court

I am a pusher. That said, I have a great net game so absolutely love when people bring me to the net. That said-I do agree with your point on taking ball early. Angles are tough to deal with for me as I’ll put the return back to the middle and it gives a chance for a high percentage put away.

Good video. What I found I needed to do is just build my strokes up to hit a heavier ball from both wings. My two-hander was always solid, but my forehand I hit too flat and didn't take it out in front enough. Went to a straighter arm forehand, and tweaked the backhand to get it to rebound high to the guys backhand. Result, I could just pin them to left corner with my backhand, making them take the ball above the shoulders. When they tried to slice, it would sit up more and short, so I would angle balls off. One drill I used to do alot of was just hitting balls off the drop from all six points on the singles court. I would go down the line, middle and cross court from all positions. The goal was usually to hit the heaviest ball I could keep in consistently. When they resorted to junk, I could still generate my own pace.

I would add that you need to constantly move forward towards the baseline and net. The closer you move in the greater the available angles become. When you hit a shot you should have placement, pace and purpose. If you can step inside the baseline and hit the ball on the rise you take reaction time away and increase the possibility of sharper angles. Placement on an angle shot is more important than fast pace. Make mental notes of how your opponent responds and anticipate and adjust. Personally I love to move forward and volley towards the opposite sideline on my follow up after opening the court. You have to “plan and prepare””not “hit and hope”.

Awesome video, great advice! I also find that short crosscourt backhand slices are deadly against the pushers, similar to topspin angles but also difficult because they bounce low, but in both cases you have a ton of space on the other side of the court. Would love to see how to beat aggressive baseliners video aswell, or some other playstyles, these videos are great.

Great tip Jeff! My son's game did a 180 in his last year playing Jr. USTA's, he was able to beat 90% of the players he couldn't beat before by adding heavy topspin and ridiculous angles to his game. His confidence grew 1000%, he felt he could beat anyone, and not only did he beat pushers easily, he beat big hitters easier as well by moving them off the court! Too bad more top world US Players don't incorporate this strategy! Seems to me you should be running the USTA Jeff!! Keep up the great work!

Get them with sharp angles. Keep varying your shots. Make them run and don't get into a rhythm. The pusher's I've played against didn't do well with heavy topspin and didn't know how to take the ball on the rise so I just spun the crap out of the ball and put it in the corners. Not sure what else, I don't play against pushers that much

Hi Jeff, Thanks a lot for great insights with the video on this play. But I still have a question on this topic. What if the pusher is very fast and can get to even deep angle balls? Because experienced pushers can in this situation always run down these balls and throw up lobs, hook slices or moonballs to really slow down the play and get back into position. Eventually attacker still has to take more risk by hitting close to the lines and change directions back and forth and the pusher will keep looping the slow balls back. Another alternative is to follow to the net after the sharp angle ground stroke but this tactics require a crisp volleys and killer overhead to finish the point. But as you know, sharp angle ground strokes and killer overhead don't usually come together at recreation players who spends only limited time on court each week. So, is there an effective shot combo to beat fast pusher without having to attack the net?

I like to just slice deep and charge to the net against pushers. They tend not to be the best when it comes to passing shots. The only thing they tend to do well is lob when you approach, but if you get the slice low, I have found that their lobs are very ineffective.

Fast pushers are the worst and depending on the court speed, you can find yourself hitting 6+ good shots and they are still in the rally. One of the best things to do in that situation, but it isn't easy for a lot of baseline players like myself and that's to come to the net when you know you've hit a good approach shot. If you let them float defensive garbage back to you, they will be content to do that all match. It's usually true that most pusher types have a practiced lob, so don't camp right on the net either. Ultimately, these types of players are playing to not lose, which is a totally cowardly mentality. Even though you may be frustrated by these types and lose to them sometimes, if you stick to your game and work on improving your level month in and month out, you are winning in the long run, not them!

I’m a pusher with a big first serve and a very strong net game. I love nothing more than when people bring me to net because that’s the strategy they’ve been told to use. I end up hitting more winners than they do. Then they try and hit out and error themselves to death. The two things that beat me are deep heavy topspin and aggressive net play or angles. Obviously if a player is very good they can simply over power me without making too many errors but I’d imagine 90% of ppl trying to find a video on KZfaq on how to beat a pusher are not that person.

Hey, today I just played against a person who I was beating pretty heavily 3-1 until the kid started moonballing every single damn shot I played... I was doing fine for a while, until I realized that the balls I didn’t moonball back never went in, and then I just got more and more frustrated and then he beat me 5-3 (time for our match ended) I’m going to be honest, I’m pretty mad and even though I tried every angle possible from every position, he ended up getting there and moonballing it back. I don’t plan on losing like that again. What would you recommend for someone with that type of play. His lobs were high and deep if that helps.

I'm surprised you don't suggest using slices that sit low or short agains a pusher or using a drop shot. From my experience pushers are not that comfortable if you bring them into net and then make them volley from there. Bringing them in and the hitting good passing shots had worked well for me when I've played pushers.

Hitting such angles is great tactics against ALLtypes of opponents. Therefore I'd call this a "tennis platitude". Or in the colloquial sense, a "duh". And it's this very type of shot that the pusher may be hoping you'll attempt, because it's quite likely that you'll MISS that angled shot. So you may end playing into the pusher's hands....

Your angle strategy (2:30 mark for example) is great, assuming you can reliably hit those short & wide shots. These are also risky and prone to errors for rec level players, which is EXACTLY what the pusher is looking for. I don't see how this is a practical tip for a rec player like me (say 4.0). The pusher needs you to make mistakes, and this advice plays right to their game. The near court player is obviously much more skilled. Perhaps your advice should be to "be a pusher" instead.

One of the most common incorrect ideas about pushers is the first one mentioned in this video. The belief that pushers play this way to frustrate you. This is almost never the situation at all. They do it because playing defensively is a valid tactic in a sport where most points end in an error and very few end by a winner. Many of them don't have the technique or strength to hit winners with any regularity. They generally have found that they can't put away balls easily to win points, but they win many points by just getting it back into play more times than the opponent does. If the other player implodes, that is just a bonus, it is not the goal of an actual gameplan. They react to what you hit to them and don't tend to have a tactical approach to matches other than to get everything back. It is that simple, if you try to guess at what they are thinking and scheming about on the other side of the net, you are getting in your own head already. Pushers are reactive players...that is it.

Pushers can never be #1 but they can be average/decent players. If you CANNOT beat a pusher, you are not a good player. I also find it funny how opponents of pushers get frustrated, which hurts their game more. These people who get frustrated often think everyone should play tennis a certain way LOL - sorry but it doesn't matter. A win is a win no matter how you get there. I changed my game depending on my opponent's game and weaknesses. PERIOD. But you need to practice so you can play different styles and shots when called upon. I was never the best player technically/mechanically nor was I the fittest but I was great at identifying my opponents' mechanical and psychological weaknesses, and exploiting them. It helped me win many tournaments. Any player can be an all around player if you put your mind to it and practice - you can develop solid ground strokes if you serve and volley, and you can volley well if you're a baseliner. Just takes hours of practice and good mental training to get over your negative thoughts.

I don't even know why pushers play tennis, almost every coach is against it and tries to get away from it, it is not fun for either the pushers or the opponent, not entertaining, looks embarrassing and like you are a ten year old playing, you are not respected most of the time, everybody hates playing you, not really even playing tennis at that point. But hey, you won a game off of someone who is not as consistent as you

Sorry, but this will get you killed against a solid pusher of your level. Pushers love to move and normally tend to hit better when moving, so you only need to move them when you have a big advantage for doing so. Here your guy is 3-4 ft behind the baseline and in NO position to hit a damaging short angle with solid percentages in his favor. The ONLY thing that this ball dipping would have done is make the bounce sit so the pusher could run it down with ease and have an easy placement against you. This video ignores the KEY aspect of hitting angles, that is even MORE important against pushers....and that is being up inside the baseline where your angles can be much higher percentage as well as far more damaging.

2:46 You are not making sense. If you can hit an angle on a ball, you will beat EVERY BODY. The name of the game is the game of averages. On averages, you cannot hit angles. As a pusher, I know what can beat me. Better shots. But that won't work ON AVERAGE. Like airplane dogfighting the pusher doesn't rely on missiles. He relies on dogfighting, Constructing a point. He will win even though he hits the ball slower. He's hoping you will try to hit a faster ball. On average, that won't work. You cannot beat a pusher, on average, because that is his game. He's playing the averages.
