If you’ve played guitar for any amount of time, you’ve probably gathered that strumming is a pretty important piece of the puzzle - the guitar is considered a rhythm instrument after all. So to help you navigate these daunting rhythmic waters, we’ve created a guide to help you play ten of the most popular strumming patterns on the guitar.
Throughout this guitar lesson, Kent and Ayla will guide you through increasingly challenging strumming patterns that span various genres and styles. We’ll start things off nice and easy, so you can get the core of the technique down, and move our way down to a few busier patterns that can really add some flair to your playing. We’ve also added a popular song that uses each strumming pattern, so they’re even easier to wrap your head around. Go grab your guitar and let’s get to it!

About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first KZfaq video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

That last strumming pattern you said is for funk is also a disco rhythm. My guitar teacher taught me that disco was based on the 16th note. You constantly play 16th notes and you mute some of those notes by lifting your chord hand to give it a disco groove.

As a "non-dominant hand strummer" I doubt I'll ever get to that level in patterns no matter how much I practice 😅😅 so I'm going for the "Down-Up-Smack-Up" pattern, which is seriously challenging enough already haha, ..my hand keep wanna add an extra down in the end or replace the up with it.. heh...

The Wonderwall strumming only seems elaborate because you’ve taken it out of the context of the chords. Focused on the actual chord changes, it’s simple. Good video.

i wish for the more complex strumming patterns that you would go thru it at speed before jumping straight into the song - it's difficult to make the transition from half to full speed while also trying to keep track of the chords. it feels like there's a step missing and it's really frustrating rolling the same 5 second loop back bc you also didn't repeat it like you said :/

IMHO, for Faith, the pattern should be : D . . U . . D . . U D . D . X X 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a That's how it fits if you keep your strumming hand moving up and down through the beat. In fact she does play it like that at the start (10:16), but still missing the subtle UD.
