I got my Kickstarter copy of Full Quiet about a month ago now and have been playing it quite a bit; I think I'm down to maybe 43% static. SUPER impressive game- basically a survival-horror Metroidvania. Graphics are really nice, music is atmospheric. Puzzles have also been pretty complex, and I sorta feel like a genius after figuring each one out. Stuck on another one now, but I'm sure I'll get through it soon... No guides for it anywhere, either, and I think I prefer it that way- no spoilers! Absolutely worth the 5-year wait 💯💯💯

That is fantastic to hear! Glad you are enjoying your new NES game. The thing about not having a strategy guide is it kind of puts you back in the day when info on games was a lot more scarce and you have to DIY. @@TheGameBeaters absolutely, there are more people trying to replicate past success instead of creating new success in the gaming world these days. Granted there's been so many video games made that it's kinda hard to have an original idea or try something that hasn't already been done, especially when you have a bunch of corporate money holders saying they want something like (pre-existing franchise) but for Our company. That's why it's so great to have smaller independent game development going on, atleast you can count on them to usually keep things interesting. 😄👍

I imagine that all of these games (except possibly for the officially licensed Garbage Pail Kids) are digital file only to be played on emulators since they would need the Nintendo lock out chip to be put on a cartridge? This is one area where homebrews for earlier consoles like the Atari 2600, Commodore 64 and so on have a slight advantage: They can be made into physical cartridges since lock out chips or even licensing were not required.
@TheGameBeaters
@TheGameBeaters Жыл бұрын
Its interesting you bring this up. We recently did a panel with modern NES devs you can watch on this channel and we touch on this. The short of it is there have been advances in bypassing the lockout chip and most of these games are available on cartridge to play on original hardware. In fact I have a copy of Full Quiet on cart sitting next to me as I type this. :)
@JustWasted3HoursHere
@JustWasted3HoursHere Жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBeaters I figured that lockout chip was only a matter of time to figure out and bypass. Heck, if coders can figure out how to jailbreak an iPhone then a lockout chip from 40 years ago ought to be a piece of cake.

it's so funny how much better the color palettes are for these new NES games, and the pixel art quality, than many original NES games. like 30 years of color theory and pixel art theory take the same tools and produce higher quality visuals. all of these would have been some of the best looking games on the system.

I know I asked a question already, but I have another. So, the availability of some of the games in this video (in cartridge form) is limited, I understand that. That being said, are the games also available for ROM download? If I do that, I should be able to save them to a blank cartridge and play on an NES that way, no? Forgive my ignorance, but homebrewing is completely new to me. I’m also not good with computers, I just use them to stream and stuff, I don’t know how they work.
@TheGameBeaters
@TheGameBeaters Жыл бұрын
You can download the majority of these roms at the links in the description of the video. Also if you want to play them on NES hardware I recommend what I use which is an everdrive: amzn.to/3YazpS1 this allows you to load many games on to an SD card and them play them on a original NES. Hope that helps answer your question?

So how do gamers get started making their own home brews these days? Does anyone use NES maker? What kind of memory/space requirements are best? Etc
@TheGameBeaters
@TheGameBeaters Жыл бұрын
Making games for NES is hard but cool. You can write words using tools like cc65 or neslib, or you can use NESmaker which is easy but not as flexable. You can also use other ways like assembly, BASIC, or Pico-8. The normal size of an NES game is 256 KB, but some games use chips to make it bigger up to 4 MB or more. NES Maker seems to be the standard these days to get started. I hope this helps you begin.

How do people make homebrew for a system like the NES? Did they just make ROMs for an emulator or do they actually buy chips and make an actual game? I didn't even realize people were doing this on systems like the NES I thought they were mostly doing it on things like the Vita where you just write a program and the machine can run it if it's on its memory card
@TheGameBeaters
@TheGameBeaters Жыл бұрын
There are a few different ways that people can create homebrew games for the NES. One way is to create ROMs that can be run on an emulator, as you mentioned. This is a relatively simple process that allows people to create and test their games on a computer before potentially creating a physical version of the game. Another way to create a physical version of a homebrew game for the NES is to use actual ROM chips and program them with the game. This requires a bit more technical know-how and specialized equipment, but it allows the game to be played on an actual NES or other hardware that can run NES games.

@TheGameBeaters Жыл бұрын
I wish I knew the answer for you but I do not have any experience with the retron 5. Hopefully someone else can answer?
@DarkKodKod
@DarkKodKod Жыл бұрын
Retron 5 is software emulation. Each game on this list uses different hardware components that needs to be supported by the emulator. I would think these games are made with generic hardware so they should be playable on your retron 5 but that's something you need to ask the developer or test it yourself. If the game was made with NESMaker then most likely it won't work.
