This seems so dumb. Patreon is there to support creators you like. If they give you joy, it's usually enough. How is PewDiePie different in terms of "BeNeFiTtInG sOcIeTy"? He entertains people. He creates videos which makes people happier which them more aspirational which benefits everyone around them which results in tens if not hundreds of millions of people better off every single day. Not mention merch he sells which creates a ton of jobs and enhances millions of lives. I don't like PewDiePie. I think his content is garbage and as a person he seems really meh to me (I don't know the guy). But if you want to support only those who "benefit society", he should be a prime candidate. More than Kurtzgesagt. You support them because YOU enjoy them. It shouldn't matter who else they benefit because you can only recognize your own benefactor because epistemologically that's the only thing you can have a perspective on. If you want the world to be better in addition to that, then sure, their content is great for that. But it shouldn't be the primary by which you choose to support monetarily. You come first. Society second. Always. And it doesn't mean you should throw people under the bus as it were to gain an extra cent or save a little time. It simply means that in terms of priorities, when you want to benefit others, it should come from a personal desire and not some idiotic and fallacious floating ethic of altruism that has no basis in reality that needs following. Almost all the bad you see in the world is a result of others putting others before themselves, making unnecessary sacrifices in the name of altruism. You can still have charities and teachers and philanthropists without altruism. This channel for example doesn't do what they do to help the world (even if they say they do). They do these animations and research and music and voice over because they love it. THEY love it. Not society. Not others. We benefit as a result with high quality videos. But that's not the primary. Never is and never was. They make these videos because they value what they do. Like I said before, PewDiePie directly and indirectly benefits society a lot more than this channel. And there are plenty of other people on Patreon you could support that do way more for sOcIeTy. So if somehow that is your primary, you should unpatron them and give the money to somebody else. Be a principled person. I on the other hand will keep supporting channels I like. Me, myself and I. Not society and not anybody else. Me. And everyone will benefit as a secondary result. Selfish is not a dirty word. It's a misunderstood word that is conflated with egomania. Completely different thing. So be selfish and fuel your values. If it's society then go and patron somebody more impactful. By that standard, not doing so would be hypocritical. Please don't take this in any mean spirit. This is simply food for thought. Maybe you misspoke and I made a completely irrelevant comment as a result. Doesn't matter. I hope you take it seriously though if you do think altruism is somehow a proper ethic (it is not because it is axiomatic and doesn't prove itself). If tomorrow the world runs out of fossil fuels PewDiePie won't do crap ok. Scientists and engineers will do all the hard-work to get ensure that society progresses infinitely. You can't even compare science to entertainment. Doctors save lives , engineers built the phone which you're using, researchers will find the cure to COVID. Entertainment won't do any of this. It will just make you happy. You can't say entertainment= science. That's incorrect.

Scientific research costs money. Awareness (what this channel does) doesn't mean sht if there is no money to back it up. More money in the economy benefits scientists more than anything. And you currently live in a society where fossil fuels are available. So you argument about who is more important in there future is irrelevant (especially since this channel is, again, not supporting science directly. It is an educational+entertainment channel). And PewDiePie is given as a very specific example because of how big it is. I'm not saying entertainers in general are more important. It's him specifically stimulating the economy way more than this channel probably ever could. So again I say, support who you want. Not who benefits society more. PewDiePie benefits society more. That's a fact. An easily shown economic fact. Support Kurtzgesagt because YOU like their content. Because YOU want more of it. Not because "it benefits society". It barely does anything in that regard. I love them and hope they make more quality content (although they do sometimes promote really bad things in tiny parts of their videos). But I won't delude myself that they are a good way to support society directly. That's just false.
