Over the last 6 months, the 14” MacBook M1 has been a treat, BUT… I’ve run into some serious pitfalls. In this review, I share my long-term experience with the MacBook 14” M1 Pro and my honest opinion on whether or not it’s still worth the investment, especially with the M2 MacBooks on the horizon. Enjoy!

Thanks! I am experiencing the same issues with my brand new new MacBook 14", as well as a number of other glitches with the laptop such as USB stick corruption, network, Wi-Fi and I/O port issues and Final Cut pro Library files being severely corrupted and backup Library files completely disappearing! as well as other files becoming corrupted and unreadable, that don't bode well for a new device. There were also a number of OS System and FCP updates that came through just before the the FCP Library file corruption issues but I suspect it's a hardware issue, possibly involving drive corruption. After watching your video I am going to return the new MacBook as it's a good reminder of one of the main reasons I stopped doing media production. (Too much time invested in chasing broken hardware and software along with broken client for the return on investment), and forgo getting back into content production as a serous effort, as the time and money I've spent trying to update to a "New and Improved" device and software has been ten times what it should have been, and I've only just started. It seems the old trench of obsolete vs bleeding edge has not have ended, and after being left hanging by Apple on Two MacPro Desktops and two MacBook Laptops, I'm inclined to downgrade back to my 5 year old Intel-Nvidia laptop workstation as it's more reliable and gets the job done better and with less headaches without additional cost with less stress.

Despite these negatives, it's still the best laptop I've had in my life by FAR. I got the base model. One thing people have to be aware and that I personally struggle with is that there will always be something "better". It doesn't matter if you "future-proof". In 5-10 years, your future-proofed laptop will be outranked by something cheaper. Get what you think you will need/want for your upcoming work, because you will always say "I should have" as technology gets better. Could I have upgraded than ram, storage, cores? Of course. But for what I do (music and video editing), it's amazing even at base model.

My 14” M1 Pro also spends a lot of time plugged into a dock with multiple displays and peripherals. Battery capacity is 96% of original after 7 months. Are you using the Optimized Battery Charging option in macOS Battery preferences, to preserve battery capacity by limiting the charge level on AC power? I use the utility Al Dente to manually limit the charge level to 80% on AC. Either way you can make it top off to 100% charge on demand. Also, do not frequently drain the battery to 0%; that, and high heat at 100% charge, are major contributors to reduced battery capacity. Also, you said the battery has a “maximum” number of cycles and it is 1000. But that number is not a maximum; the battery doesn’t just die at 1000 cycles. What Apple says is that the battery is designed so that at 1000 cycles, it still has at least 80% of its original capacity. If it drops below 80% during your warranty period, they might replace the battery under warranty. I have seen some reset issues when docked, but they are random and infrequent. The current uptime for my M1 Pro is 14 days. I agree that the 14” screen size is a sweet spot, and I’m happy with the overall performance and experience (cool and quiet). This is the right model for me.

Its your setup, I think . Try changing your power setting to not sleep when docked and adjust your screen saver. I used to have an issue when or after waking from non apple display (49” Samsung.) as it resets some external dongles. Once I adjusted power AND got a new Apple keyboard with Touch ID, never another problem. It works PERFECTLY.

I use primarily sony's Imaging edge and Luminar Neo with file size of each image about 35 MB. When i work continuously with these software, i get 6 to 7 hrs of battery life for a single charge (10 to 100%). Machine heats up a bit. within 40 cycles the battery health was down from 100% to 99%. Now a days i charge only from 20 to 80%. Hope i will not get into any problem with the battery...Otherwise, the machine with superb display is one the most ideal one for photo-editing...images look awesome..love the machine...

True, the 14" seems to be a kind of sweet spot. I originally ordered the 16", but after trying out the Air M1, the 14" and the 16" several times in the Apple store, the 16" seemed more and more oversized and over- weight. Good for stationary work when you still want to store it in a drawer or so, but just too heavy and too huge to carry it around. So I cancelled the 16" and ordered the 14" in return. It is also more reasonably priced as I took only 16GB and 1TB instead of 2TB.

For the heat rise / fan spinning, occasionally click on the battery on the finder to see what's using "significant energy". If "Core Sync" from Adobe Creative Cloud shows up, you can disable it in system pref under Extensions, uncheck it. It will stop you from using Adobe's cloud sync I've read, but it's been known to cause the issues you're describing. I just found this fix today. Hope this helps!

99.9% of the time this is because people start loading up their laptops with more software. It's very easy to look up the battery capacity in System Info, which will show that the battery hasn't degraded (it's nearly impossible to degrade a modern laptop battery in less than a year, even if you tried). The Macs get their long battery life by staying idle as much as possible. As you have more software in the background (like Creative Cloud, Dropbox, Mail, Spotify, etc), all of that will slowly eat away at the overall battery life per charge, even if it doesn't seem like much on their own.

This is the first of your videos that I've seen. Good job. It's extra interesting following the reviews I'm seeing for the M2 MBP. My 1st ever bleeding edge computer was the M1 MBP which I got right after its release. I just couldn't stand the roaring fans on my 2015 i7 15" MBP anymore. The M1 MBP was a dream except one thing ... PORTS!!! That part was a nightmare. I tried several various dongles to plug in my three external drives and my HDMI 4k monitor. They would all randomly disconnect and even managed to corrupt my Time Machine drive so badly that I couldn't repair it. I got the binned 14" MBP Pro as soon as I could and I haven't looked back. The only upgrade was the 1TB SSD. It has functioned flawlessly. I've managed to make the fans run a little bit while editing photos but I couldn't hear them. I have not yet done any video work on it yet since my need for that has mostly gone away. Seeing the reviews of the M2 MBP, I'm ultra-glad I didn't wait for that. But I got the M1 MBA for my wife when I got the 14" for myself and now I kind of wish I'd waited on that in order to get her the M2 MBA with magsafe. I can help you with this as I am a tech guy look the issue is really simple Apple fucked up with the design as always it would be a miracle if they actually listened to technicians instead of saying you are using it wrong I am not a moron I understand the damn protocol you built it upon but that is irl to Apple ofc. Look the solution is simple MX4 thermal paste, put thermal pads on the rams all of them cover them do not chop them into little pieces even put a small thermal pad there cut it on the BIOS chip then do the following update the Monterey to latest version, update the EFI Firmware which is the BIOS and the UEFI of the Macbooks to the last one download the appropriate sofware that allows you to manipulate the fans ignore the sound make the fans go max because it cools the device max and keeps the temperature 30-40 all the time MX4 and MX5 is much better then the Keramikal garbage you are given no offence to you if you are a long Macbook user but they need to get their shit together not every person is a technician or can use a heat gun ignorance of theirs is really starting to piss of a lot of tech guys or remove the whole damn motherboard to get to the fans how does that make sense. Do this fix you should not be doing this but PC and even Mac producers tend to screw their customers over with downgrading the damn device in order to save money put a thermal pad on the SSD if you have the drop of speed is because the M2 ssd is getting to much heat and the same is with Ram Cards this will make your device breathe better Apple will still choose their ignorance and spew their BS knowing fully that people that work on devices are not idiots and I dare say will call them out on their BS. 1500-2k-3k up to 4,5 even 6k for what for me needing to tune the damn device for that sort of money you should not experience problems it is common sense unfortunately next Gen Apple tends to lack it a lot!.

paused video after the negatives to answer a couple of specifics. I have the same model as you, for about the same time. I also use the Caldigit TS3+ dock (that's what yours looked like). I used it docked a lot with a Dell 4K monitor for a while, now the Studio Display. it's docked a *lot*. Battery health FWIW now 100%, 47 cycles, "normal", design capacity 6075 mAh, current: 6008 mAh. FWIW. I hadn't *noticed* a fall-off in battery life, but it may be I don't take it out enough... I also don't make any special efforts with battery management. With the Dell monitor (always via displayport) I have sometimes had it failing to properly wake or sleep the display, but I don't *think* I ever had the computer actually crash. Of course, a failing-to-wake monitor could *look* like a crash but I'm sure you're beyond that kind of confusion 😉 All has been perfect since getting the studio display, on or off the Caldigit dock. I did have an issue with the Caldigit dock's ethernet port though, not showing, not working properly, etc. It turned out to be a known problem, probably since macOS 12.4 I'm guessing? (for a few months either side of 12.4 coming out I was on wifi-only anyway so didn't see it when it started.) It tries to put the ethernet port into power saving mode and the dock doesn't support it. You need to turn off that "energy efficient ethernet" setting. Caldigit has a video about this issue here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLhdp8uHqdrYY6c.html and since doing that, it's been solid again. (and in general they've been great for support, especially given mine is about 4 years old now and still gets firmware updates...)

I dealt with the reset issues BIG TIME and what stopped it was getting dual studio displays. I had it connected to a 50" Samsung TV and it was a horrible experience. After switching to the studio displays, all of that went away and going from sleep to awake is instant. I know everyone isn't into the studio displays, and they're pretty pricey, but if you can do it, for the time alone it was worth it to me. It's trash that Apple seemingly purposely makes their products to not work with other brands. Just a bit of info in case you decided to ditch the monitor you have.

I've been looking at getting a base m1 pro macbook with 1tb storage and no other options, and this video was incredibly insightful. I haven't seen a video as critical as this one yet, they're usually all praise. Regardless, it will be an upgrade from my 2015 5k imac minus the screen size, resolution, speakers, and USB-A, but my external SSD is USB-C, I don't really use the speakers all that much, and the 4k screen on the 16 inch mbp is probably the best combo of color accuracy, refresh rate, and resolution out there for the money anyways which as a photographer and videographer who can't afford a Pro Display XDR is most important to me anyways.

FWIW, the only "clamshell mode" issues I've had with mine is slowness to wake up from external Apple BT keyboard-sometimes I have to open the lid to get it to wake and reset the video output. It also seems to really hate switching between external displays of varying resolutions-artifacts in Photoshop (I blame Adobe), and general app slowdowns requiring app relaunch or sometimes Mac restart. Everything else - smooth sailing after 15 months.

My 14" MacBook Pro has been holding up great since I got it in December 2021. The battery has held up pretty well and the performance is still quite impressive despite the low memory count and 10/14/16 M1 Pro processor.
