Excellent presentation Dale. I have the 1559, but I must confess that I don't reach for it often. I'm really enjoying the 2019 at the moment, with occasional interest in the American 1928.

You mentioned a few things that I had not known previously! I have book which had the 1549, 1557, and 1662 BCPs with lots of notes and articles. It even has a ribbon! I'm going to check and see if Queen Elizabeth I's prayer is included.

As always, fascinating. By the way, the St. Bernard breviary sold out. Call it the Brother Dale endorsement bonus. Thank you, Brother Dale. I got my 1st edition thanks to you. Do you use the Lancelot Andrews Book of Common Prayer much? I know you did a three part video on it, but I’m wondering if it is getting used much.

I still use the LAP BCP, just not for the Daily Office, because, quite frankly, Ben's book is so very convenient in having everything in one handy volume. But for the Eucharist, as well as for some of its calendar's feasts, the Lcontinues to be my go-to. Indeed, a crisis may arrive on 30 May, the first Sunday after Trinity, because Ben's book uses the post-vatii calendar organisation of Sundays as 'Propers' closest to certain dates rather than the tradition of Sundays after Trinity as the LAP BCP does. Maybe then I will just return to the shorter lectionary of the '28 book and use Lance's Anglican Office Book. Such a wealth of riches.

Very interesting history ! Might you be able to increase your volume when recording? I have my device turned up all the way, and find it difficult to hear :)

Sorry. I will try to remember. I think that captions, which are sometimes comical, are allowed on all my videos.

Dale, what are the best, in your opinion, books concerning the development of the BCP, up to and including the 1662?
@dalecaldwell2 ай бұрын
Actually, tere are basically just two prayerbooks to consider, the 1549 and the 1552. The 1559, 1604, and 1662 are slight updates of the 1552. I much prefer the more catholic, traditional 1549 book, which was updated as the 1637 Scottish Book which was never officially adopted by the Church of Scotland, but which was then the basis for the American prayer books until the 1928 book. However, what I find genius about Cranmer's work is never what he says about the bread and wine and how they are/become/signify the Body and Blood, which was what most of the controversies surrounding the prayer book have been about, but what he says about the transformation of the people who are participants in the liturgy. I hope to expand on this appreciation of Cranmer in a video soon.

@@dalecaldwell Thanks! I'm strongly considering reading "The Stripping of the Altars."
