Here is the link to my earlier video explaining the String Test for accuracy discussed at the end of this video:
• String Test Measures A...
‪@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb‬
In this video I shoot and discuss the 1851 Navy in 44 caliber, cap and ball revolver made by Pietta.
For one main reason (It did not exist in the 19th century-as if that's some kind of violation), this apparently popular revolver (as demonstrated by how many different versions are available for sale) is rarely featured on Video channels or discussed on social media sites. When it is mentioned...people almost always "warn" the owner to remember its not historically accurate. Yet...we shoot, discuss and feature other revolvers that did not exist (i.e., Ruger Old Army invented in 1970's) with no such warning!
Here, we shoot the 1851, 44 caliber Colt Pietta reproduction, enjoy it, and discuss perhaps what makes this revolver the most popular cap and ball revolver that few seem to admit they own!

Who cares what caliber it is! It's an old-school type of firearm and fun to shoot! None of my B.P. firearms are authentic or original or collectibles, but all are fun to shoot! I have about 20 to 25 B.P. firearms. All I shoot and work on myself! I have many modern firearms also and work on them also! After suffering four strokes, which stopped me from working my job and not being able to do much of anything for myself, my doctor asked me what was the most enjoyable thing I liked to do before my strokes! I told him, " Target Shooting, reloading my own ammo and working on my own firearms. " He said he wanted me to start doing some of those things to see if that helps me. He suggested I do it with a friend if I could to make sure I was safe as I did some of those things! I had full use of my right side arm and leg but not my left side arm and leg and left side of my vision. Competition shooting was out due to the fact I couldn't see anything at all to my left side which to me was dangerous for other competitors around me. Reloading was out and working on my firearms was out too because of little use of my left arm. I was sent to see a physical therapist about seeing if he could help with my arm and leg problems. He checked me out and gave me some tests and said he thought he could help me. Well after several weeks of doing several exercises at his office and at home I got back most of the use of my left side arm and leg. I started to collect some B.P. FIREARMS to practice shooting and working on. That did it for me. In no time I had collected about 9 or 10 B.P. guns. Every day working on them, day and night, taking them apart, seeing how they worked, removing burrs and machine marks etc. On all of them. Now I'm able to shoot them and do when ever I can. To me it's not only fun and enjoyable but also very therapeutic! Videos like yours on shooting B.P. firearms keeps me going! Keep it up sir!

I'm 77 years old now, and my first hand gun was a 1851 Colt 36 cal. That I believe was about in 1969. I loved shooting that pistol and shot it a lot! Since then, I've owned and shot at least 150 or more handguns in every caliber made. Got into handloading my own ammo for every hand gun and rifle and shotgun I owned. I shot in every type of competitions and collected guns of the two world wars etc. Owned and shot several automatic weapons also. But during all those years I've, at one time or another, gone back to my Black Powder firearms shooting for small periods of time. I've built several Black Powder rifles and pistols. Now!, for the past five or six years, have only worked on and shot my Black Powder Firearms for fun and what you might call therapy! I've found that I love collecting and shooting Black Powder firearms! To me, Black Powder and Black Powder Firearms are not 2nd rated firearms or powder! I even load black powder in my 44-40 and 45 colt handgun and rifle cartridges, and my 45-70 cartridges. Yes, I've got historically correct Black Powder revolvers and rifles, and not so historically correct guns! It doesn't matter to me what it is, I love shooting it. I like working on and fixing these Smoke Polls as much as shooting them! I've even got into making my own paper cartridges for all the handguns! I do believe!..If your getting old like me and you like shooting or hunting, getting into Black Powder shooting of these great old pistols and rifles is very therapeutic and fun, not to mention the lower cost to get into it! The 1851 Navy .36 cal. Colt pistol is, in my opinion, is a good start! But whach out!, this can be very addictive! You might find yourself collecting and shooting these old Smoke Polls! They are fun to shoot and not as costly as modern firearms. I ALWAYS RECOMMEND GETTING and reading through LYMAN'S BLACK POWDER HANDBOOK AND LOADING MANUAL ( 1st or 2nd editions ( either one) and really read it! There is a real wealth of info and loading data in them! On the internet you'll find a lot of info from people like the " Old Ranger ", " Blackie Thomas ", Guns Of The West", " Lame Beaver" ( one of my favorite!), and so many more!..all great info on Black Powder Firearms shooting, cleaning, repairing, history etc!! ..AND I MEAN GOOD INFO!!!...Have fun and enjoy!!!

You are in the same camp as Duelist 1954. For myself my first Cap and Ball was an EMF Mason Dixon commemorative revolver in .36 caliber, it only cost $37.00 and some shipping. At that time was very little knowledge about cap and ball the first time I shot it it was with 2F powder and Crisco and No. 11 percussion caps. I was told that I probably wouldn't be able to hit a barn from inside. Well it went boom, and I hit a barrel 3 times out of 5 at 10 steps and I was hooked! Since then I have shot cap and ball in Cowboy Action shooting, just for fun and to try other things I had heard other people do. When they go boom I still get that same feeling!

Here is the deal. I have personally owned 4 or 5 black powder revolvers, all of them open top colt replicas, all of them by Pietta and all but one in .44 Caliber. That one is an 1851 Confederate Navy .36 caliber brass frame, which is also not historically accurate as I understand. My first black powder revolver was actually an 1851 confederate Navy .44 caliber kit gun. I never blued it, as I liked the silver finish which was because it caused people to think it was either nickel finished or stainless steel. And I have had 2 1860 Army .44 caliber. What got me hooked on black powder gun’s was actually an old Kentucky long rifle .45 made by CVA, which was my first black powder gun. Still have the .440 round ball Lee mold for that black powder rifle. I do not care if it’s historically accurate or not, long as it’s black powder and fully functional I’ll enjoy shooting it.

OK, I am 78 years old, and the only C & B I own is ... wait for it ... a Pietta .44 calibur I bought online for about $175. I did not know, and would not have cared, if it was "accurate" one way or the other. I will soon purchase a strap back of some kind as I really prefer the ability to swap out loaded cylinders. I think sometimes that folks who are interested in the use of firearms of any kind exhibit a bit of - oh how can I say this - over-identification with the product. I just like to shoot and enjoy the entire process. By the way, if you get a moment, I do have a question, and perhaps others might also have this interest: my pistol has a brass frame, like the weapon you show in this video. I saw some pellets made where you could just drop one of these in each cylinder versus the conventional method of power measurement. You drop one of these in the cylinder, add your wad and lead, and ram home as usual. I have not had the opportunity to shoot these yet, but hope to soon - during the holidays. My question/concern is I have read a few very brief comments that touched on a problem with the use of this kind of power load in a brass frame gun. Do you have any response to this? Please use my email associated with this comment. Thank you for your video and look forward to viewing many more.

Hey David...sorry for my delay. So I have never really used the pellets that are sold made from the black powder substitutes...like pyrodex and triple 7....What I know is that its best to load down for brass frames from a load for steel frames. Also, triple 7 is hotter and provides more energy per grain, as does pyrodex...but not like triple 7. So, I personally wouldnt use them cause Ive never seen them in less than 30 grain pellets and, while that may be good in a steel frame 44...that would be about 8 grains to much (in my view) in a brass frame 44. I shoot (either BP or pyrodex)..14-18 grains in 36 caliber brass frames and 18-22 grains in brass frame 44's. That just me but this goes generally with the manufacturers recommendations. hope this helps Thanks for your support. Ive got more videos coming if the weather gives me a break here in Michigan

I don't know if anyone mentioned it in the comments, but if it really bothered someone couldn't they just look at it as if the Colt prototypes (there were at least two as I recall) escaped the factory and they managed to nab it? or perhaps they had Colt custom build them one...or they started with a .36 Colt and had the local gunsmith/blacksmith beef it up? best thing is to not care what anyone else thinks period. I started collecting and shooting these 3.5 decades ago and have owned well over 50 or so and today still own over a dozen cap and ball revolvers and I have always said when it comes to the Colt pattern my FAVORITE is the 1851 in 44 cal. I don't like the twist rate and wish there were more options, but still it is my favorite. I have sold off many, but still own a 4 7/8", 7", and 12" barreled versions of this frame in .44 and will always choose these over my 1860 if I could only take one. I shoot what I like and not what someone else likes, but I have been just as guilty of "arguing" about these topics with others many times in the past. I have the Remington pattern in all the barrel lengths and frame finishes offered as well and no one hardly ever says anything about them not existing in that configuration , finish, etc. so it must just be a Colt fanboy thing? ... well I no longer have the 18" carbine (yes I know it actually did exist) as I did not enjoy learning to flinch...even converted it to 45 Colt and still burned my face and beard!...hated that one!
@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb 6 ай бұрын
I couldn’t agree with you more obviously. As you, if I had 1 choice of 44 cal to put my life on I’d take the 51 navy in 44 I used in the video. I just love it. Thank you for saying what I tried to say…who cares what anybody thinks! In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that a 44 with navy frame did show up somewhere. Thanks. Ps: I have the Remington revolving carbine and it’s not my fav cause of the face blow back…it’s fun, but my face is a little too close to fire lol. I did a vid on it and only fire it once in a great while! Generally when a friend wants to see it shoot.
@hercules1073
@hercules1073 6 ай бұрын
@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb The carbine is an attention getter for sure, but let someone fire it as their first cap and ball experience and you've just lost a cap and baller for certain as they'll probably never want to try another one. @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb Yes! But only if you're loading and shooting as fast as you can for long periods of time and that they are full size hand guns. I have found the Uberti's hand grips to be more historical in shape then Pietta's which has what some call a tail on them which tends to force the barrel to rise higher by putting more pressure on the lower polm of your hand. I don't have a problem with either due to the fact I don't load and shoot as fast as I can especially for long periods of time. Also I switch guns often during a long day of shooting. Like shooting a 7 1/2 inch barreled revolver and then a revolver with a 4 or 4 1/2 inch barrel or a smaller caliber! Doing it that way I've shot, many times, over a hundred rounds of Cap & Ball pistol rounds with no hand or arm fatigue at all. ( .36 or .44 caliber) ...( NOT WITH MY WALKERS OR DRAGOONS )! Take a .36 cal. 1851 Colt copy w/ a 7 1/2 inch barrel feels more heavier then a 44 cal. 4 1/2 barreled 1851 Colt copy! Even with full house loads! But usually, between useing three or four B/P hand guns in a single day of shooting, I usually find out I only shot about 50 or so rounds for the whole day. And that is in one day maybe every couple of weeks or so! What I'm trying to say is if your shooting B/P pistols and have hurting hands or arms afterwards you might need to find out why!... to much shooting all in one day, litter loads, standing or sitting!?.. Like I found out I could fire my B/P 1885 Browning 45/70 W/ 580 gr. Bullets from the standing position all day with no problems but sitting behind a bench it beat the living heck out of me even just shooting half the number of rds. What I'm trying to say is that if you got a problem there's a good reason why! Find out what it is and find out what you need to do to correct it! I had a friend that lost his little finger and the one next to it on his shooting hand. He said he couldn't shoot his single action pistols any more. He tried using his left hand but had problems with speed and accuracy with useing his left hand. After a couple years he gave up! I asked him if he had tried going back to useing his right hand. He said he couldn't grip the pistol enough to use just his thumb and fire it without it twisting out of his hand. I closely watch his draw and firing his pistol and noticed that his pistol twisted in his hand when drawing and cocking the hammer and then haveing to use his left hand to reposition the gun in his right hand before firing. Because of this this his draw was slow and first shot was slow and not very accurate. After forcing him to do exercises to strength the grip of his middle finger and finding a good pistol grip maker that made a set of grips that forced his middle finger grip lower down the grip, his grip strengthening of his middle finger and being locked in the same place every time his speed and accuracy came back to the point he thinks is faster and more accurate as before his accident. He would of given up two years earlier and not shooting right handed with handguns. But having someone push him and help him to figure out what was the problems and a way to fix it he probably be handicapped in his chosen sport! NEVER GIVE UP ON ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DO! MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS AND WAYS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS!!

I don’t think you can do better than a Colt 1851 navy in 36 cal made by pietta or uberti. Easy to shoot and a great revolver to start with. Since you are a history buff this was used during the war.

One of my black powders is an 1851 44 cal. I prefer the caliber over 36 and don't care if it's historically accurate. It's not an original colt, so what does it matter. You have the look and feel of the original. You get to load it as the original was, just with a more fun caliber.

i got a gun from my father inlaw he told me it was a navy 36 pietta with 5 lbs of black for 100 bucks i looked it up and it had navy arms co. made in Italy with the letters G/U under it serial number 538 on it found it was made in 1958 the first year of navy arms and ubirti made gun and the gun is in very good condition they claim it is worth up to 2500 i say in it condition about 2000 the blueing is a little worn but it covers the whole gun no bare spots. it was a very well made gun i can't slid a 1/1000 fueler gauge between the barrel and cylinder but it don't hit or drag it is perfect no blow by i did the tissue test and nothing on the tissue or holes. i have never seen a revolver that tight and i have a lot of revolvers . then i have seen people say if u can only slid a piece of paper it is good not one of my colts u can slid a piece of paper through that spot most are 1/1000 space. at least that is what it should be

i know the 51 navy frame in 44 isnt historically correct but damnt i sure do like the fact that is available in .44 now and the fact that they didnt really change much when they made it in .44 it looks the part to the casual observer only the its got to be historically accurate crowd is crying about it to be completely honest none of the reproductions are absolutely historically accurate they use modern steels rought iron like the original colts of the era not many of the reproductions even bother to nickel plate the trigger guards like the originals the original colts had many minor changes over the years like the size and shape of the opening for the finger openimg in the trigger guard in closimg this comment ill say that the modern reproductions take all the best elements of the gun theyre reproducimg and build a completely new gun this isnt necessarily bad but it isnt historically correct that being said i cant find fault with anyone for owning and shooting a 51 navy in .44 nor can i find fault with a company producing a gun in caliber that isnt historically correct the people must want a 51 navy in .44 cause people do buy them and they do shoot them and they look like theyre having a blast doing it lastly ill say im jealous of all yall out there havimg such a good time with your 51 navys cause i dont have one yet

@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb the picture ive seen actually had the same barrel. They lengthened the grip frame and stepped the cylinder for 44... The second one they trimmed some of the barrel. There was like 4 or 5 iterations before they got to the 1860. Kinda cool really. Colt even flirted around with a pepper box prototype that never went anywhere in the 1850s Edit for what its worth ive had decent groups with Eras Gone Kerrs in my 44 piettas. Might be worth a look.
