Enjoyed your podcast on Hurricane Creek Mine Disaster. But the library isn’t named after Richard Nixon. A municipal arena in Hyden was named after him.

I don’t think so. In this case, though, they were so concerned about something happening they wanted to let recovery teams know who they were if worse came to worst.

I worked in the mines 6 yrs and my Dad was a Federal Inspector for MSHA Barbourville KY office for 36 years and I can tell you that it is Federal Law that any worker in a mine has to be wearing an MSHA approved mining belt with your KY Miner ID# (which is your SSN) engraved in brass and permanently affixed to it. I'm 100% sure that's what they were talking about and it just got miscommunicated to them somehow.

Coal miners broke there backs trying to put food on the table, and to make sure that their kids could have a better life. If Black Lung and destroying their bodies wasn't enough on a daily basis, the owners of the mines seem to compromise on the health and safety at every turn. It took strikes to get better pay, benefits and safer working conditions. It's unreal what coal miners have had to endure. Hardest working people I can think of, and yet treated so shabbily. Shameful.

No, it happened in December, 1970, but since it was late in the month, you'd likely have heard news about it in January, too.

No, it happened on December 30, 1970, but the news of it and of the rescue and recovery efforts extended into 1971.
