BAM... pure gold! (Also subscribed) I was too young to see this series live, but watched it many times growing up when l lived in Canada. In particular, I remember the mythos surrounding Tretiak... his size, speed, flexibility, and intimidating warm-up routines. It kind of felt like Rocky IV. Please keep up the great content.

With the 50th. anniversary of the series fast approaching it brings back a lot of memories. I was 10 years old living in Calgary. I missed the series winning goal by Paul Henderson because I was worried about being late for school. The last part of game eight was during lunch time and I was watching at home. Once arriving at school the game had just ended and I had to watch the replay of the famous goal later on.

Just to clarify you were worried about being late for coming back to school because you went home for lunch? if the documentation is correct the game started at 1 pm EST which is 11 am in Calgary. So you went home at lunch and watched some of the game then went back to school as the game was still going on where during this time you missed the goal?

Nice recap, but you should have mentioned Henderson scoring the game winning goal in games 6 and 7, leading into game 8. The game 7 goal was a thing of beauty. Also the referee controversy going into game 8. He had officiated Game 5, and was a big part of the Soviets coming back that game due to the power plays. After Game 5, the Soviets told Team Canada that he wouldn't officiate again in the series, but when Canada won Games 6 and 7, the Game 8 official was suddenly ill, and told Canadian officials that he was told that if he reffed game 8, he'd never see his family again. Who knows if all that was true, but it definitely highlights the sheer paranoia that existed by the end of the series.

@@FischerFan Yes he would have. Orr is a defenseman; Clarke is a centre. Guevremont or Awrey would have been the ones on the outside looking in, especially since Awrey was also a Bruin. Besides, there were no tryouts on the 1972 team; every player was invited to join in the expected asskicking. It wasn't until 1976 that Hockey Canada did actual tryouts for international pro competition.

I remember it pretty well. Canada was set up by the Soviets, everything about the Soviet Union was corrupt. We( Canada) did not take it serious until they played the first game, at that point Canada was just a bunch of individuals, unsure of what to do with their teammates. This changed when they went to Europe, Canada began to gell. This changed everything, and Canada won while playing one man short- and on the penalty kill.

This series really makes me hate this era of Canadian hockey. They had to bully and cheat their way to a series victory against a team that wasn't even 20 years old. The Russians took the skilled route and the Canadians, butt-hurt that they were getting shown up at their own game, took the dirty route. Pitiful.

While there were some cheap shots taken, the Russian refs did their best to give home ice advantage as well. While there was no doubt the Russians were a great team, they weren't built to play the North American style of hockey.

There were a lot of nice goals and some great passing on both sides. I think the Soviet team was in better shape. This was off season for the NHLers. Also it takes a bit of time to gel as a team. In the end Team Canada persevered. Hi key is a tough game and if you want to win a cup you have to play hard. The Soviets were a great opponent and quite under estimated at the time. That changed.
@MrSprigg
@MrSprigg 3 жыл бұрын
The Soviet officials cheated by breaking agreements and appointing crooked referees in the Moscow games. Mikhailov started kicking Canadian players in the shin with his skates. In Sweden, Wayne Cashman almost had his tongue ripped out by a sharpened Swedish stick., and missed the four games in Moscow as a result. The people who whine about Canada's play in the series neglect to consider that this wasn't just a hockey series. It was an extension of the Cold War, and victory was a matter of national pride for both sides. The Soviets wanted to prove that their system was better than ours, and they were willing to go to any lengths to make that victory a reality. That's what communists do; they cheat as much as they can get away with, regardless of when or where they are. This time, they failed.

Every Nation in the Free World Capitalist Nations hated the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc Warsaw Pact Nations guts during this period. This Series was like the equivalent of Team China National Ice Hockey Team being the New Back To Back Winter Olympics and World Hockey Tournament Gold Medalists World Power Team for nearly 20 years during the first days of the COVID-19 Pandemic vs Team Canada National Ice Hockey Team. Russia was the Most Hated Country to the Western Industrialized Nations.
