London has more than 1,000 gas street lamps, which were installed at the beginning of the 19th century. At the time, they were considered a major innovation in a city with dark, dirty and often dangerous streets. In central London, they still light up parts of The Mall avenue leading to Buckingham Palace, the back streets of Covent Garden, and around Westminster Abbey. The atmospheric light they give out is evocative of Charles Dickens novels, Mary Poppins and Sherlock Holmes. But as they become increasingly difficult to repair and maintain, local councils are considering replacing them with eco-friendly LED ones.

I just love the warm and soft illumination of gas lights.

I've always had a fascination with gas lighting since I first saw the movie "Gaslight" on TV as a child in the 1950s. I worked for the oldest gas utility in the US in Baltimore which was founded by Rembrandt Peale in 1816 after a trip to England where he experienced the use of gas for lighting. When we had our present home built in 1999 I had a new gas lamp installed outside by the sidewalk. I chose an open flame burner, even though a mantle lamp would have provided more light using the LP gas in our rural area. I just enjoy looking out the window and seeing the flickering flame at night, especially in Winter when there's snow on the ground. I hope London will keep as many of the historic gas lamps operating as long as they possibly can.

@@longiusaescius2537 No, but if you search online there are a few manufacturers of outdoor gas lamps in the US making post mounted lamps identical to the one I have installed.

It's such a shame when historical things are lost for the sake of progress & modernization. I grew up in a small backwoods town where certain roads are still dirt & when I was still a teenager I asked why. The answer I received is that they're kept that way because they're historical. Back then I just thought they were dirty, bumpy, bad for your vehicle & annoying. Now that I'm older I completely understand the reasoning behind it.

Agreed, that first sentence.. I collect, buy and sell victorian oil lamps, and it pains me when I see gorgeous 130 year old porcelain etc oil lamps brutalised to put cables through, not to mention some exceedingly rare burners just hacked up to ram a B22 in there 😪 it's always the most ornate and valuable ones too!

because the new one is technically and logically better, old isnt always pure gold, gas lamps are kinda cool but modern street light is way better

THIS IS what I look for when I want old England-style light. To be able to recreate that look somewhere else in the world or in a game like YoWorld, and to be able to try and recreate the look of the time when JTR was at large, I want this look and England has it! Keep them! Keep them all!! When I do go back for a visit, this is what I want to see pls. XOXO

I study the chapter of class 7th English light in the night that is all about street lamps. The author says that only 5 people lit it and it is 200 Year old.
