They played in the Big East. Beating up on Rutgers, Temple, and Pittsburgh was not impressive. There's a reason that Miami wasn't respected by the BCS back then. Don't forget that they always needed help in the early 2000s because it was clear that if a Big 12 team like Nebraska and an SEC team like Florida or Tennessee went undefeated, Miami would be the team left out by the BCS because of strength of schedule. They were fortunate that it never played out that way because teams like Nebraska and Florida were playing monsters while Miami was playing high school teams.

We should of had at least 10 plus titles in our program!and by now 15 plus but due to administrative mayhem and bogus accusations the program went down and Alabama took all of our players! But right now, that time has changed the U will be back in all due time and for the SEC i know your watching us because the players are coming from our back yard in Miami and as long the 2 time champ as our coach Mario Cristobal is at the helm and the New Alumni AD the U will be a threat in all sports watch and be ready. Statistically they aren’t even close to 1995 Nebraska....... Sure they have big name talent but they simply weren’t as earth shattering dominant from beginning to end every game the whole season. Some crazy stats. 2019 LSU is considered the most high powered offense of all time, yet 95 Nebraska still averaged more points per game than 2019 LSU and they had a rush offense..... 1995 Nebraska ranked #1 in total offense, #1 in total defense, and #1 in special teams. They scored 12 touchdowns on defense and 6 touchdowns on special teams. 1995 Nebraska averaged 8.4 yards a down. 1995 Nebraska never trailed in a single quarter of a single game all season. 1995 Nebraska holds the largest margin of victory in any national championship game ever, and they did so against statistically the greatest Florida team in program history who ranked #2 in total offense and #2 in total defense.Florida was never held to less than 40ppg against anyone and they played 6 Top 25 teams. 1995 Nebraska beat them 62-24..... Florida averaged 360 passing yards per game and 220 rushing yards per game going into that game. 95 Nebraska held them to 218 passing yards, -28 rushing yards and recorded 7 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions. Despite 95 Nebraska playing the #2, #3, #5 and #8 best defenses in the country (all Top 10 teams) their oline did not allow a single sack all season......

In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes ever made by the City of Miami was demolishing the Orange Bowl, hands down horrible mistake!! That stadium had so much history and was the perfect venue for the Hurricanes, very sad.

ONE of the greatest teams? There is NO other college football ever assembled with the level and depth of talent that 01 Hurricanes squad showcased. The ONLY weakness they had was at QB, but they still were so overwhelmingly talented that they were able to make Ken Dorsey look like a good to very good college QB.

Yes they had a lot of NFL talent, but they did not dominate every game they ever played and where no where even close as dominate in every game as 1995 Nebraska. Which if you want to talk NFL talent 1995 Nebraska has the #2 record at 32 drafted players and the only reason their QB wasn’t drafted was medical reasoning due to a genetic disorder.

I agree with you. I think the stat that backs your statement is that in a 4 year span from the 2001 NFL draft through the 2004 draft the fewest amount of first round picks from Miami was 4. They had a total of 20 players selected in the first round in a 4 year span.

I remember years ago they were doing a show on ESPN regarding the 2005 USC team and how it would stack up against past D-1 championship programs. They had the 2005 USC team beating the 2001 Hurricanes team. First let me say I am a lifelong USC fan. But in my opinion, nobody beats that 2001 Miami team, absolutely no one. The 2001 ‘Canes were stacked stacked stacked with talent!! Too many names to mention!! Fight On!! 😂

Hopefully the Canes can rise back up. With NIL, the transfer portal, and heck you’re in freakin’ Miami (Coral Gables)-a selling point unto itself, they ought to be able to get something started! Somebody on the outside needs to challenge the SEC besides Ohio State and maybe Michigan.

I just sit and wonder how many titles Miami would have had not Butch Davis left. We could go even further back and say the same thing with Howard and Jimmy. And one other thing because I see a couple of Alabama fans chiming in. Kids back in the 80's- 00's wanted to be at Miami. Thats all they thought about. They weren't given 5-6 figure money bags to come there. To your credit, Alabama has taken advantage of a down Miami program whose administration, until Kirk Herbstriet called them out, cared nothing about football. This allowed Saban and others to come to south Fl and take what they want. I believe the NIL deals along with Mario will slow the poaching considerably.

I agree. I think that the 2001 Hurricanes team were on a whole different level compared to those teams you mentioned. The one stat that always blows me away is that the 2001 Canes played a ranked opponent in back to back weeks and won both games by a combined score of 124-7

As a Cane fan, I don't think fans of other teams really appreciate the Miami teams of 00, 01 and 02! Why do I say that? They don't understand how hard it was to build those teams! Miami was placed on probation in 1996. Miami is not the only team in the state of Florida capable of winning a national title. 96 to 98 Miami had 33 scholarship taken away, 3 years of probation and 3 years of bowl bans. Miami while on probation their fellow state rivals FSU and UF were in the best success runs in the history of their programs with legendary HC in Bobby Bowden and Steve Spuirrer. The 90's UF owned the SEC and FSU owned the ACC. Both played for multiple national titles and both won national titles. This is what Butch Davis HC of Miami 95 to 00 had to deal with coming off of probation in 98 with fighting FSU And UF here in Florida for recruits winning the way they did. Far as I'm concern knowing all that, Miami rebuild back to national power 98 to 00 is the great head coaching in college football history by Butch Davis and his staff. Miami take back over the state with Bobby and Steve there and the took back over college football. They should have played for 3 straight national titles and probably won 3 straight!

Even as a cane fan the we 'should be 3 time national champs' rings a little hollow: (a) 2000 - OK so the BCS computers did what they always did but the question is would the 2000 Canes have beaten OU? We will never know. Should they have had the chance ... maybe, for that loss at Washington. (b) 2001 - as much of a steamroller that the '01 Canes were they nearly screwed themselves against BC and Virg Tech. Too often the Canes left points on the field - how many time did they kick a FG against Penn State who they utterly dominated. (c) 2002 - just beat FSU and Virginia Tech again. The Fiesta Bowl they couldnt stop Krenzel running and scoring TWICE. The offense was pretty anemic most of the day considering how well they usually ran the ball - the Buckeye defense played a great game. Anyway ... just some thoughts.

Nebraska had no business in that national championship game they were exposed by Colorado. Tennessee AND Texas choked in their conference championship game. Oregon also had a legitimate argument to be in that game to play Miami.

The scores of these games don’t do it justice either. Larry Coker put 3rd string guys in and just went into a shell. The Nebraska title game was 34-0 at half. The Penn St game was 30-0 at half. If it weren’t for Coker we would have set all time offensive scoring records. Easily.
