The 2011 Kentucky Indy 300 unexpectedly became the 2011 IndyCar finale giving this race an interesting place in the history of the IndyCar Series. The horrible circumstances that took place at the following race in Las Vegas resulted in this race deciding the 2011 IndyCar Series championship.

My son and I attended this race. He was 5 and had just lost his grandmother the week before. This was a chance for us to get out for the day and forget about things for a few hours. On our way in a gentleman approached us and handed us pit passes as he was unable to attend the race. We got to walk all over the infield seeing the crews and drivers up close. I remember seeing Dan Wheldon talking things over with his team, but did not want to bother him. They were handing out tickets to the finale in Vegas, but I did not get any as I had no plans to actually attend the event. I had my Sarah Fisher racing hat on proudly as I was a big fan of hers. The race was epic and the finish even better. What followed at Vegas was a grim reminder of the dangers of the sport and before we knew it, we were grieving yet again. This time for Dan's family. I miss Indycar at Kentucky. It was always a great show.

For anyone wondering where Dan Wheldon, Vitor Meira, and Buddy Rice finished in their last official Indycar races here at Kentucky, here they are: Buddy Rice #44 = P9 Dan Wheldon #77 = P14 Vitor Meira #14 = P16 Also, here’s where the Newman/Hass Racing drivers finished in their last official race: James Hinchcliffe #06 = P4 Oriol Servia #2 = P6

Something I find fascinating about Ed is that this win basically summarised his career: when he was in competitive equipment he somehow preformed worst then in midfield equipment.

Back when Kentucky was a good track for the sport, and the track was at least decent. I miss the constant IndyCar oval racing

I grew up watching IRL at Kentucky and this last race was one I'll never forget. What a finish it was. I wish Indycar would return to this track but now that track is a massive parking lot for Ford trucks that no one bought during the chip shortage of 2020. It's very sad because me and my dad made so many good memories at this track watching IRL, NASCAR & ARCA races. That sound of the old Indycar's buzzing the barrier out of turn 4 is something I'll never forget.

Amen man. I live in Cincinnati, so this was my home track. For about a 5 year stretch we had season tickets to the events so my summers from 2002-2005 would be ASA, ARCA, Busch and Truck races and then the 2003 and 2005 running of the IndyCar event (I couldn’t go to most due to the tickets going to my dad were Marlboro from Penske so it excluded kids in that deal). That being said I feel grateful (whether I knew it or not) that I got to go to the Xfinity race and bring along my youngest brothers who didn’t get to enjoy those early year races and then repay my dad for those memorable summers by paying for his ticket to go to the Cup race in 2019 and see an amazing race. I miss Kentucky as a whole, I miss IndyCar’s races there as I feel it could work as we have the current car, I miss the roar of the engines and fun factor of the atmosphere. I keep hoping someday it will come back, but 4 years since a live event, 5 years since there were fans in the stands, I am losing hope.

This is also the final Indycar race for Danica Patrick as a full time driver as she would leave for NASCAR for 2012. Speaking of NASCAR, I also find it weird that in the same year Indycar held its final race at Kentucky, the NASCAR Cup Series held its first race there (a race more known for the horrible traffic jams that prevented the majority of fans from getting into the track). Unlike Indycar, the Cup Series mainly had boring races at Kentucky especially when NASCAR was running the 550 package. The last Cup Series race at Kentucky was in 2020 during the pandemic & the track has mainly sat abandoned since then.

Super happy, not only for Ed Carpenter, but Sarah Fisher as well who owned the team. She clawed her way racing on a shoestring budget at Indy 500 (thanks to sponsor that didn't pay/pulled out after it was announced) that ended up in a crash not at fault of her own (thanks Marco Andretti) and slowly built throughout the years to finally end up on victory circle. It came at a right time as sponsor Dollar General was leaving after 2011 season (would return for Indy 500 the following year). Fisher would run the team for few more years partnering with Hartman then Carpenter before selling her shares to him. Her final driver turned out to be Josef Newgarden who gave the team their final two wins before it became fully Ed Carpenter Racing.

End of an iconic chassis, for me anyway. Sure wish a mainstream kit manufacturer would produce a plastic injection molded kit of these cars in 1/20 or 1/24 scale. Maybe there is some hope now that Salvinos J R has an IndyCar license and is making a new DW-12 kit, a man can dream of an IR-03/IR-04/IR-05 kit...

Yeah it was. I should have added that in there. I could have mentioned that it was Danica's last race as a full time Indy driver and the last race for the Dallara chassis IR-05 also. I just mentioned the ones that were more easily overlooked, but thanks for pointing that out as I overlooked that fact myself.

Happy New Year to you as well Kellie!! I've had that on my to do list for a while now. However, this whole copyright thing with NASCAR has NASCAR content currently on hold for the time being. I know, they said it was AI error and all that, but someone from NASCAR has rejected some of my disputes which is honestly really upsetting. However, that was before NASCAR came out and said it wasn't them (which is obviously not fully true), so hopefully the rest of my disputes and appeals get corrected before i touch anything NASCAR again.

This race was great with an amazing finish it's just unfortunate the race at Vegas ended in tragedy but as painful as that Vegas race is I think every so often need to look back and reflect on it I think Indycar has done a pretty good job at avoiding pack racing but people need to realize also racing is dangerous period I saw Mike Conway flip into the fence at Indy in front of me in 2010 yes we have the aeroscreens but there is always unforseen circumstances eventually someday unfortunately something will happen again it's inevitable
